I am in awe of Brandi’s many talents. I saw Tanya’s movie in the theater long before it began showing on Netflix and became totally captivated with Brandi and Shooter in how dedicated their loyalty to bringing Tanya back to life was. It was and remains such a beautiful testament to all involved.

I was working at Tower Records in 2005 when Brandi Carlile's self titled debut was released. The first song, "Follow" had me at Carlile's voice. I was floored at the expression and breath control. By the second song, "What Can I Say?," I was done. The harmonies and lyrics had me thinking Jim Croce, in all of the good ways.

I've been playing guitar, and kind of "playing" drums, for about 32 years, but seriously playing for about 28 years. And I did the whole band thing, metal scene...etc. But like most aspiring musicians/bands nothing serious came of it. So I did everything in a mangled order: kids, college degree, marriage (mother of kids) 😂. Anyways, I stopped seriously playing for YEARS! And then I heard a solo (Heretic-Synyster Gates) that made me have to learn sweep picking, which I always wanted to do. This lead me back into my true passion in life, music. I didnt have time to the band thing so I decided to record my stuff instead and have my old drummer lay down tracks when he could. Well after the first song we did from start to finish I quickly became obsessed with the production world, especially mixing! And Ive been learning and developing the craft ever since. Thanks for all you do, Warren, to help the people like me out here trying to do it on their own.

Brandi Carlile has an amazing voice. She and The Twins have amazing harmonies. About 2009-10, I saw Carlile on back to back nights at The 9:30 Club-500-ish capacity in DC and the next night at The Rams Head in Annapolis, MD. For the latter show, I was 20 feet from the band. The room had low ceilings and was perfect for acoustic and jazz. The band was able turn off all application and do a song pure voice and instrument. Amazing.

That was such a nice interview...........if ever there was a force in the music business, it's Carlile. I still remember mixing her at my old job, Hotelcafe. This was around the mid aughts. I'd never heard of her then. I walked up to the stage to introduce myself and ask what everyone needed. First thing she said was, "hey how's it going man....just so you know I sing really loud, like I'm really loud!". I thought ok cool, let's do this. Then soundcheck starts and...... holy SH*T!!!!.. ok!!! 😳. She was the real deal!. Thinking back to that moment almost 20yrs ago, then to her bringing Joni back to the world.....and now a producer, It's quite an accomplishment and arc of a career.

What amazes me is that the little place she is from may as well been on the far side of Mars. Ravensdale? At the time she grew up that wasn't even a starting point for anything. I know!!! (Drummer from Enumclaw)There was nothing except maybe a few loggers, so it really shows its not where you're from but where you take it. If Elon Musk wants to traveled across the universe he should consult Brandi first because she has already traveled the distance to where she is today. A LONG LONG WAY. I was in the studio on Saturday with my engineer/co-producer. He loves your channel, talks about it all the time and said Brandi was your guest this week. I sang with Brandi twice when I was 12 in Portland (the videos are on my channel) -such an amazing weekend. Brandi and I talked a lot about how to get the best out of your voice back then. It would be fascinating to see what different things Brandi would do to bring out all the things I think she must have heard 6 years ago and all the places my voice can go now. I first heard The Story when my mum, sister and I watched The Lucky One as this song plays in the credits. I remember when we heard it for the first time and we all burst out laughing when Brandi's voice cracked as it caught us off guard. We kept rewinding it and getting into fits of laughter again. During lockdown, I discovered Brandi again and started listing to more of her songs and I felt this odd sense guilt looking back at laughing at The Story when I first heard it. Hearing Brandi talk about how her voice cracking for the first time singing it made her almost burst out laughing 40:27 made me realise that my reaction was just a pure, genuinie one and how silly I now feel for feeling that hint of guilt. There was no mal or mocking intent, just amusement.

Actually, I grew up with brothers and a Dad who loved music and played Guitar, percussion and piano. So music was part of birth gift in some sort of way. Moreover, I'm from reunion island and music is part of our history. Our local music which is called "Maloya" was made by slaves who fled in the mountain and the forest, and they had to communicate in some sort of non-comprehensive way so they can exchange information without "masters" knowing. So, percussion build out of whatever was available was the communication process. Then voice come in and maloya was born. (Listen to Danyel Waro one of the best for traditional maloya). Then growing up I had the opportunity to "produce" a pretty amateur dancehall project learning to mix by myself, and then I never stop. went to audio production school in montreal (Musitechnic) and work in the field for small artist and few documentaries until I got a job as a teacher.

Wow what an amazing guest! I didn't know she transitioned to production. I still sing songs from The Story almost every day and I use it as a reference. Her Miley Cyrus collab was kind of an odd choice though.

Love these interviews! 🙏Regarding "producers not often being artists", two more "artistproducers" who did great production work just just popped up in my head! :) Todd Rundgren and Jeff Lynne. And also Daniel Lanois, when thinking about it ( but from a slightly different angle, producer first, then making solo records)!

Indeed! There's always exceptions to the rule, although both Jeff Lynne and Daniel Lanois are not huge front men, both consummate professionals. The point is large personalities that are used to being the centre of attention don't often make great producers, whereas instrumentalists that are able to be part of the band, it's arrangement, feel, groove, have an amazing understanding of their role

@@Producelikeapro I totally get your point, interesting observation! They all have this attitude of being servants to the music. It´s a deep thing.

So cool. Great interviewer and interviewee! (COMPLETELY aside from the interview.... curious why more attention wasn't put towards clear audio(?), especially considering the guest and since it took place in an actual studio.... and since the lavs were visible, something more appropriate could have been also. Just odd to have to listen through the distraction of muddy lavs when there was no reason to have to here. ps, still a fan)
