I sing the praises of the Warm Audio 87. I can throw it on just about anything and with a tad bit of EQ, it sounds great. You can score a used pair for less than $800 most days of the week. So many of those old mics are now at least 60 years old or more. Capsules, wiring, and caps are starting to dry out and deteriorate, if they haven't already done so. There are some great services out there to restore, but who wants to spend $10,000 on a vintage piece and then turn right around and spend another $3,000 (and 6+ months) getting it refurbished? When so many of the great engineers out there are happily making great tracks (and money!) using new stuff, there's really no reason for us poor weekend sods to be out there throwing our hard-earned dollars at overpriced vintage stuff.

Thank you Sebastian! Glad you enjoyed the video. It’s just that extra 20% of goodness to compete in the modern marketplace. Not every song and especially not every genre I would do that. The thing with older vintage mics is this: they were either consumer or professional level. There weren't a lot of inbetweeners. You either got the cheapo Grundigs or Philips to plug into your small reel to reel, or broadcast quality stuff, which was nothing to sneeze at. Mics were commissioned by broadcasting houses, in a quest to be better than their competitors, to get government and military contracts, etc. Nowadays there's a mic for every price, and its all profit driven, pushed by marketing and paid reviews. It's not about innovation, but about finding a space in the market. Even the once great mic companies have since started suffering from this, take AKG in the 90s. There are too many mics to choose from, its option paralysis when it comes to purchasing. Too many companies competing for the same spot and the last 10% of the price. If you buy a vintage mic with a particular reputation at least you know what you're getting - no influencer is trying to pull wool over your eyes.
@InTheMixJoeCarrell Жыл бұрын
I see what you’re saying about vintage mics and the marketplace at that time. However, I really feel you’re underestimating that there are microphones being manufactured now that are indeed pushing the envelope at the highest levels. I’ve heard our predecessors say many times that they never believed at the time, that an 87 or a 67 was something magical and would be revered and worth so much money 40 or 50 years later. It was just a tool they had. So what modern microphones or tools are we potentially missing out on right now that will become classics of their own? It’ll happen. Thanks for watching 👊🏼

In the same manner of the 414 or 87 that can be thrown around on anything on any given day…I feel like these have that same ability to become a long time “standard”. Great sound BUT also lots of bells and whistles type of options that it’s predecessors never had. Big fan.

Ancient tech is fine, so long as it doesn't fail at the wrong moments (which it often does). So, kudos to the new makers.... Maybe I missed it, but no time alignment on the drum mics? I've found that that at least 50% of drum tone improvements can be gotten with a lot less EQ, gating, and other processing just by getting drum mics aligned. Yes, it can be a fiddly nuisance, but well worth it.

this has absolutely nothing to do with your title, like almost all of your videos of the past few years, it's disappointing, maybe just actually talk about the issue you bring up, which would make a fascinating discussion with any experienced audio engineer, any, a dude you found on the street that says he recorded a band once, he'd have something to say, instead you guys record a band and use some gimmick doing it trying to rope in obviously sponsored products, and just abandon the admittedly clickbait in the first place title, it's incredibly annoying, I stopped watching because of it and I thought this was a good enough idea to click back on it, and you know what I regret it yet again, your content is getting so stale, and it's not lack of effort, it's lack of expansion, please, find something else to do instead of clickbait titles, "we recorded a band with lauten mics" is what this video is, it has nothing to do with vintage mics at all, literally nothing, objective at least, so why even bring it up?

Yep same for me. Misleading title and same content as always. It’s videos like these that make me wonder why I’m still subbed

Hey thank you for being a loyal subscriber it sounds. The idea and concept for this video was mine and just to be clear no money changed hands whatsoever. As a long time working professional who is always eager to evolve and change in the mix room, I admitted to myself that I was pretty hung up and stale in the studio as a Recording engineer. Still fairly obsessed with vintage items in old school technology. And when those items were not available to meet, there was a little bit of an anxious uneasy feeling using things I was unfamiliar with. So I thought it would be fun to challenge myself to throw out every microphone I was used to, and use only models that were new and not re-creating anything from the past. Hopefully that makes sense. I know there are thousands of guys just like me that also have this thought and may want to follow along and download the multi tracks. Obviously not every video and every subject will be for every subscriber. And I’m sorry that you did not connect with this one, but maybe the next one. That said be sure and enter to win that Lewitt Pure Tube!! It’s really a sweet piece of gear. Best wishes. Joe C

So it is an endorsement for Lewitt mics that are overly bright and hyped...

Not at all. It’s a concept and Lewitt and Lauten were kind enough to participate. I haven’t found the Lewitts to have the characteristics you describe. I’m enjoying them and decided to keep most all of them here to go alongside my classics. Best wishes

@@InTheMixJoeCarrell Ok, thanks. There are far too many endorsements going on. Lewitt' basic mics are akg 414 oriented, that is far too bright for a lot of voices. Not a good alround mic, in my opinion.

Just because it’s recorded doesn’t mean it sounds good. New mics work on some stuff, if you only use new mics, it’s because you’ve never heard older ones or you’re deaf

In my long career I’ve used and owned/own many many many sought after vintage mics. So I can say with quite a lot of confidence, that quite a few new designs can hold their own if we are willing to give them a try. I personally think this recording sounded pretty darn good 😂😂. I guess I’m partial though. Best wishes
