I'm looking for an X32 Producer replacement. Something with the same rack mountable form factor but better processing, I/O, and physical faders. The WING Compact seems to be a good upgrade but it's still limited to 48khz. I really dig the fold up touch screen though and the flexibility per channel compared to the X32. The full time group I'm in is looking for a new board but I have to be conscious about storage space. I just don't have a lot of space in our bus bays to work with. Many of the digital boards in competition with the X32 Producer are simply too big/tall. I've heard decent things about the Allen & Heath SQ-5 but I'm not a fan of the UI. Also interested in multitrack playback interfaces for live performance. I don't need a lot of inputs. I need outputs. The Track Rig by Loop Community is really the ONLY option I find with XLR output, although anything with TRS output isn't a deal breaker. I just don't need all the bells and whistles that come with most 8+ channel interfaces that drive up the price.

Sorry Warren, I have a question and can't find the answer. Maybe one for your FAQ Friday? I'm about to record a track with a band but it features a school choir (a charity song) and I'm wondering how to record the choir as they are young and I have no way of sticking headphones on them all so I have to use a backing track for them to sing to. I'm using my portable studio to record them and then transfer the data to my DAW. How do I stop the backing track bleeding through to the mix when I put it together? Thanks in advance
@stevemaggioraofficial10 күн бұрын
In my experience with recording children’s choirs, the quickest and easiest way I’ve found is to have whoever is recording and whoever is conducting on headphones, and let the kids follow the conductor. Take it in small sections so you can focus on getting a few takes to choose from (also to potentially blend for a larger sound), and take it part by part so you have good separation and can blend in the DAW. Doing it in patchwork makes it a lot for fun for the kids and takes the pressure off to do a full take, especially if the material is new for the kids, and doesn’t take much extra time, especially if the kids start losing focus.
@stevemaggioraofficial10 күн бұрын
Reference pitches created in advance for different sections (or a portable keyboard or other instrument to give starting notes) will remove the need to have the backing track, and because there are several kids, they’ll help keep each other in tune, and the conductor/engineer will be able to hear if they’re getting off for quality control
@Mcqlfc9 күн бұрын
@ Thanks for the input. I did think about having the conductor on phones but the kids are young and are only used to singing with a backing track. They will be all over the shop otherwise.

Will Steven Slate's VSX system hurt the studio monitor industry? Vsx really works extremely well.
@trexdel10 күн бұрын
I don't think it will. I use my VSX headphones every day, but they don't remotely compare to the stereo imaging or bass response that my monitors offer (LYD48, MM26). VSX freq response is, AFAIK, more accurate than any other headphone for the price, especially when set to the flat profile. But mid to high-end monitors are truly an experience to hear, and a privilege to work on.

I see studios outfitted with hi end gear like you feature, and my first thought... who "really" paid for that gear... what millionaire decided " im gonna build a studio", and put 25k speakers in it, along with the 250k board, another 100k for out board equipment, 100k for the space wiring and treatments, another 25k for cables, and lets not talk about 10k mikes... at least 10 of those as well... and a bevy of other makes and models... Meanwhile the long time home studio guys like me use Reaper on an inexpensive 2in2out, with decently priced monitors, and a couple of decent mics. I dont get it... in an era of people listening to music on a pair of I-buds... the high end market seems to cater only to millionairs and mega-churches...
@Producelikeapro8 күн бұрын
I started with two cassette tape machines playing one through the speakers while playing against it. Eventually I bought a used 4 track. Then I got one used ADAT and a used Soundtracs console when I got a very small publishing deal, all my advance went in the gear! I did demos for people and bought a handful of mics and a compressor. After 20 years I made enough to get a loan to buy a used SSL console, it was around 25k. I built a rehearsal studio with a friend with homemade panels, we got a tiny bank loan after selling some things we owned to get the first used PA equipment. Everything I’ve got I’ve worked for, I’m sure there are people who have money from other sources, however most people I know have worked for it.
