When I was ordering a new pair of preamps the subject of BAE came up. Sales described them as top quality components from input to output. They are in use by some of the industries biggest names. As well, this demo is testament. So I inquired about the UK Sound 1173, and will try one when it becomes available. Thanks Warren.

Excellent video, Warren! What I think is great and refreshing about you, Warren, is that it's all about the music with you-and you're obviously a great musician and a music lover. Even though you're using nice, pretty expensive audio gear, it's clearly not about the gear with you; it's about what sounds good. The fact that you are showcasing budget guitars that you love shows that. Really appreciate your videos. Always on the lookout for your material.

Hands down, out of every piece of gear I've used, this made the most difference to my "sound". Honestly, I don't think I could record my vocals without it ever again. I'll have to try a hardware 1176 sometime, so far I've had a great time using a plugin version. And here I was using the stock Logic dynamics (which aren't bad at all) for all these years before I started watching your videos.

Dude I did the same thing when I got mine 4 or 5 months ago. I'm still blown away at what the 1073 does to an acoustic guitar. With just the gain switch I can dial in the tones from all my favorite albums effortlessly. It's fantastic you finally got yours. Now all we have to do is write stuff that's worthy of going through a 1073. (Technically mine is a 1084 which is just a 1073+ expanded eq functions and parameters.

@@manuellujan5625 I got a handful, actually. My first one was a Warm Audio 1073 EQ. After falling in love with it I bought a BEA 1073, but it's actually a 1084. Then I got the Neve 1073 OPX which has 8 preamps. After buying the expensive ones I would recommend to anyone who wants to get into 1073 preamps to buy the Warm Audio branded ones. They're every bit as good.(Unless you want them to act like an interface, too; The Neve 1073 acts an an interface plus preamps, and is super expandable. If you already have a good interface it's debatable.) Also the Warm Audio WA-412 is amazing, too. It's like an API with 4 preamps.

I know they won't exactly the same but even if they get me %80 there il get the Warms.

Hi Warren, thanks for the video. I also think the "nosey" sound of the typical Jazz bass is heard in the low mids specially around 250-500Hz ? Every time I listen to ToTo, I hear Micheal Poccaro's tone is somewhat mid-boosted which has a nice fill. And everytime I listen to "She's an easy lover" by Phil Collins, I really can not hear any bass every though Nathan East is playing a nice groove. I think the bass was lost in the mix. My personal opinion!

I built my own strip using the WA12 MK2 (black) mic preamp, a Tonelux EQ5P Parametric EQ that can also be used like a Pultec EQ, and an LL2A compressor limiter from Little Labs. There's no channel strip better than one u piece together using all quality components. Trust me.

Jacquire King's engineering on the bass guitar for Kings of Leon's "Only By The Night" was EXTREMELY enlightening on something that people over simplify/overlook... Hey Warren! do you have any tricks in regards to dialing in a gain level? Ive been leaving my output knob between the middle 3 dots (-1 for a dirtier sound and +1 for a cleaner sound) and then adjusting the gain until my level in pro tools peaking at 3-5 dB. my methodology is that the center output dot is +/- 0 at the output stage, so when I dial it back one dot and give the red knob an extra push, im getting just a tiny bit of breakup ("the neve sound"). The +1 on the output for clean sounds acts kind of like my mom using her arm as my seat belt. Would you mind critiquing my understanding?

Hey Warren, please answer this question for me. I have a couple of low budget pieces for my audio chain. A WA 47 jr mic, a Warm Audio WA73 and some $100.00 compressors and EQ going into an M AUDIO M Track and into Studio 1 Professional. My question is does better gear make an actual difference. I have the money for gear but don't want to waste if it wont make a major difference. I hear other people on you tube with voices similar to mine but the sound is 100 times warmer. With my gear clarity sounds harsh and warm tones always sound muddy. Do high end mics/ pre amps / compressors and EQ's make a big difference? Just the outboard compression I recently added made a difference. I'm wondering before I spend $10,000 would a professional vocal chain Mic, Preamp, EQ and Compressor make a difference. I'm looking forward to hearing back from you because you've always been great about responding. Any feedback and recommendations for gear would be appreciated. Thanks

Me personally, I bought the WA12 MK2 (black), then I bought a Tonelux EQ5P surgical Parametric EQ that can also be used like a Pultec EQ, then I bought an LL2A compressor limiter from Little Labs. That's a chain that I studied REALLY hard before putting it together and implementing it as my "go to" vocal/Di chain. The EQ is like two different EQs, and the compressor can take on three different attributes of three different compressors, not to mention one unit by itself has mastering fidelity capabilities.

Hello Warren! Thank you for another great video as ever. This videos is right up my alley as I own a BAE1073 mp. I had some concern about using a tube microphone with this pre. I'm still fairly new at understanding how to power different types of mics and have been a bit intimidated at buying anything other than a condenser. My question is "How would you go about powering a tube through a BAE 1073? in order to receive a proper signal into Pro Tools?" I've never had a tube mic available to know for sure, but it seems as though the BAE would need a 48V or DI to appear to be accepting any signal through it and I understand tube's musn't use phantom power. Is it as simple as turning on a tube mic's power supply, as well as the BAE's, and leaving all the pre's buttons unengaged? Pardon the elementary question, but I thought who better to ask than the great Warren Huart! Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the great question Cha Cha Malone Yes you are correct you do not need phantom power on your tube mic, however it won't damage it, but make sure it's not engaged. I would just make sure the output gain to the mic pre is turned all the way down when you power up the mic, although a good quality tube mic won't send a thump through the pre. Let me know how it goes! What Tube Mic did you get! I really appreciate the question! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren

Mics pres are generally one of the few things that plugins can't really emulate, considering to record the sound in the first place, you had to use a mic pre.

Hi Warren! Thank you so much for your awesome videos! I got a question regarding the BAE 1073 DMP. I just recently got one and i recognized that when i use it the way you showed it (gain at about 30 and output all the way to 3o'clock) i can hear much white noise. I'm far away from professional so i was wondering if that is normal? I felt like you wouldnt recognize it in a full mix but if i'm muting the channel strip there is a huge difference of the noise level. So do you have any tips regarding this issue or is this typical for this kind of preamps and nothing to worry about? Thank you again for your great videos! You do inspire a lot of people! Much Blessings sent from Vienna, Austria! :)

So why use the Mic gain over the Line gain on a guitar through DI? What's the advantage/difference?
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 8 жыл бұрын
Hi +Hellfire Beats Great question! Unless the interface has a dedicated 'Instrument' input (many do) then the level from say an electric guitar or bass guitar wouldn't be enough to drive a 'line input' which is designed to take hotter signals. I hope that helps? Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

Hi Warren! Could you do a side-by-side with a BAE 1073 and a NEW AMS Neve 1073? I did a side-by-side with a BAE 1073 DMP and a new AMS Neve 1073DPA and I found that the BAE was bit brighter, but the AMS Neve had a bit more gain. I did a few other tests as well: I compared an AMS 1073N with a 1073LB Pre with and without the eq LB, and found the LB to be slightly darker. I compared a new AMS 1073 with a vintage original and found it to be softer sounding compared to the AMS. I also tried an original 1066 and 1064, and found them both to be "sleepy" sounding. Anything you can enlighten me on is much appreciated!
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 8 жыл бұрын
Hi +67Stu Thanks for the fantastic question!! That's interesting results! I know that I personally prefer the BAE as one of the biggest parts of the Mic Pre's sound is the Transformer and BAE is still using the Carnhill/St Ives Transformers that the original 1073's used. Ultimately they are all wonderful products! The Vintage Neve may have needed to be recapped if it sounded softer. I worked with Jim Scott on his old RCA Neve and he had it completely recapped and he said it sounded the way it sounded when he first used it when it was new! Sometimes people idea of 'Vintage' means doesn't pass signal very well any more! Haha Great topic for discussion! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
@67Stu
@67Stu 8 жыл бұрын
AH! GOOD POINT! Is it worth it than to pay the exorbitant price for a vintage Neve only to pay even more to have it recapped? Or would it be more sound to pay for a brand new AMS or BAE that would be using the exact same components that would be used to recap the original? If this is the case, than the recapped original should sound nearly identical to the new AMS or BAE, depending on which one is closer to the original.
