A fun trivia about Death Odyssey is that before making it, Hakita actually wanted to sample classical music for 5-3 but after showing that version to New Blood they said it wasnt a very "ultrakill" song. So hakita scrapped that version and made Death Odyssey saying "fine, you want an ultrakill song? Ill make you the most ultrakil song" (paraphrased)

1:48:08 fun fact: the reason it sounds like screaming is cuz hakita sampled an aztec death whistle (he said it on the dev stream) theyre terrifying irl and also this track is very percussion based using a lot of weird instruments. overall for violence he said he tried making choices he otherwise wouldnt make to challenge himself and make this layer sound a LOT more varied and a lot further from the style youve gone used to by now. he said that whenever he was making the tracks for violence his intuition would tell him to do one note or use this or that and he would actively do something different and work from there.

For the record, the thing with Requiem is that it changes the time signature every fourth bar until the leitmotif comes in. (4:4 to 7:8 in the first section, 5:8 to 6:8 in the second section, 4:4 to 3:4 in the third)
@DJCerealSauce64555 ай бұрын

Oh my Gabriel, I love ultrakill music!!! I've only heard a handful of songs outside ultrakill where I have an emotional reaction, and I honestly don't know how hakita does it! They're just so emotional! It's funny really, I show my friends and family the songs and their reactions (especially my dad who is a music nerd) are always something along the lines of, "It doesn't sound like any song I've heard of" or, "It sounds like this guy doesn't know how to make music." It really gets on my nerves but I understand that context is a big thing. Without playing ultrakill, I definitely would not have the same tearful reaction to The World Looks Red every time I listen to it (yes, I unironically cry when I listen to that song along with a few others), And I guess that really shows how much work hakita went into molding the game and the music together into one crazy idea. oops, I'm rambling again Great to see another video dude! ive looked for clair de lune on spotify and tbh... none of the arrangements/performances on there felt as good as the one in ultrakill on my opinion. the ultrakill one has this feeling where they really take their time and dont really play the piece out and it gives the song such a calm vibe it almost feels *forcefully* calm. but like, in a way thats not forceful theres just so little energy in it. and i really really like that.

Okay things I need to call out about a 4th into the video. I LOVE the Layer 2 soundtrack, and both Cold Winds and Requiem go hard, and I honestly place Cold Winds in S potentially even double S However, I can see your opinion, but I must call you out. Say, I'm listening to Bohemian Rhapsody (y'know, considered one of the best songs ever written), and my favorite part is the rock n roll part at the end. If I complain solely about the buildup to that part, and how it takes such a long time to get through the boring ballad, and the melodramatic overdone opera, I'm gonna hate the song. However, if I accept those less exiting parts for what they are- a prelude or setup for the big release of energy in the rock n roll part- I will like the song substantially more. A similar concept applies to Cold Winds. I think if you think of Cold Winds as a chill preliminary to a more exiting song, it becomes substantially better. But then there's the real fundamental, unbiased true argument. This pertains to Requiem. You said you have an issue with Requiem's rhythm. I understand this because at face value it is confusing, and without more time to comprehend what was going on, and without an intricate and open-minded conceptualization of what rhythm and music can be, incidentals like what you see in Requiem can be confusing, so let me explain. What you're looking at is a shift from 4/4 over to 7/8. This means that one half of a quarter beat is cut from every fourth measure, which makes for an interesting rhythm that subconsciously pushed an undertone of disorder and chaos. This cutting of an eighth beat is called an incidental, and is one of the many ways to spice up your music and beats!

Oh shit there's a guitar I didn't notice back there YOOOOOOOOOOO
@DJCerealSauce64555 ай бұрын
You make some very good points that I definitely get and understand, so I hope my response doesnt come off as "abrasive" or sound like Im just trying to defend myself lol. Bohemian Rhapsody is a good analogy for the point that you were trying to make, and generally, there's a fair amount of music where I have to wait 3-4 minutes to get to the part that I like the most, and I'm ok listening to those and being patient for the best part because I think the build up is worth the payoff of that "drop" or whatever it might be. I think Cold Winds to me is a lot of buildup that I don't really care for to ultimately get to the best part that I also don't think is worth all that buildup. I recognize it's effectiveness within the context of the level, but outside of it feels like it definitely could have moved on at least a few measures faster, since there are just bars and bars of the same thing and it loses a bit of its strength, but I really like your viewpoint of "this is a less exciting buildup to get you to the cool shit" In regard to requiem, I can acknowlege that I don't really know much of a difference between 7/4 and 7/8. I know they can functionally mean the same thing and it more so depends on how quickly the rhythm is happening, but I wasn't aware until a previous comment mentioned that it's a 4/4 to 7/8 switch. I was also not aware that its an actual musical technique to cut off a beat like that in an "incidental" and while it might trip me up literally everytime I hear it anytime in the future, I will be sure to remember that because it's cool that we've sort of "officiated" that kind of thing BIg ups to you 🔥
@smorgasbored22655 ай бұрын
@@DJCerealSauce6455 yeah, I understand completely, and the incidental thing has been in use for roughly the last century, and is most common in Jazz, specifically more intricate forms of Jazz like Bebop and Modern Bop. I personally love incidentals, and if you look closely they appear in plenty of songs. I understand your opinion about Cold Winds, and it's totally fair to be a little unenthusiastic about it lol. Personally I just think the drum sample goes harder than fucking diamonds lmao. Either way, I'd recommend that you listen more to Bebop if you want to understand the more intricate side of rhythm, because it can really spice up any beats or songs you make! I think it's Panic Betrayer that has the most insane rhythms, which is why I like it so much, because I love that kind of thing. And if you want a really good, easy to count example of incidentals, listen to the Ocean by Led Zeppelin, which has an easier switch from 3 bars of 4/4 to a 4th bar of 3/4 for its main riff. Very groovy song with a very groovy rhythm!
@smorgasbored22655 ай бұрын
