Agreed. I've spent a lifetime in music and I think it's a field, like sports or the military (used to be) that is entirely performance based where NO ONE cares about anything other than whether you can perform and deliver.

I tell ya, "Beautiful Star of Bethlehem". Home Free with The Oak Ridge Boys and Jeffery East. Two groups, 40 years apart in age, plus a young up and coming singer in a LIVE performance. Each singer hits their spot on the harmonies without overlapping. Incredible precision AND power. Oh yeah, Austin has a few more years of experience in his voice too. He gets the solo. The reaction from the veteran Oaks is worth the price of admission alone.

Austin Brown, the first tenor grew up in Georgia and followed his father around the south doing gospel singing. In high school he won a state championship as an overall soloist. He won a full ride scholarship to Oklahoma City University where he majored in music and theatrical production. He just turned 36 but has a lot of experience, not to mention talent.

Austin Brown (the high tenor) attended college on a full music scholarship. An interviewer noted that he'd been singing with his father's gospel quartet at 6 or 7 years old. He'd been in a couple of other groups, sung at Disneyland and met Home Free while singing on a cruise ship. Like all the others, he's a professional singer with a lot of years of work behind him.

Austin, the "first tenor" was raised around the Southern Gospel circuit, since his dad was in a SG quartet. SG is quartet oriented and is famous for its deep basses, high tenors, and everyone's ability to hold a note forever. Yes, he's had training, but some of Austin's licks definitely come from his roots.

As someone who grew up in the 1960’s and ‘70’s, I have loved all types of music, and many artists. Between the music that my parents had playing in the house to what I was exposed to on the radio, no one looked at color. It was pure talent and whatever moved you that attracted you to the artists. I have loved Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, Temptations, etc, as well as Eric Clapton, Allman Brothers, The Band, etc. Talent and craft is all that matters.

I can definitely understand the territorial thing, but as an old white woman I have to say there is nothing more lovely than songs by The Platters. Please listen, if not react, to this old school group. They had 40 charting singles on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1955 and 1967. Twilight Time, Only You, My Prayer, and so many more. And they're STILL at it. I just saw a video made at the Hyatt Regency in Boston. They sound the same as ever. As for Home Free you HAVE to react to "Do You Hear What I Hear?". The best rendition of that song I've ever heard.
