In this video we will be once again having a look at my bike generator and upgrade it with the help of the feedback from my viewers. That means I will add a belt tensioner to the system, try out a different kind of alternator as well as a washing machine motor. And in the end I will be able to produce a decent amount of power on my own. 200W to be specific! Let's get started!

Yup, the momentum of a big heavy flywheel instead of the bike's back wheel would probably make keeping a constant speed easier. My exercise bike has a 45lbs steel flywheel and it just wants to keep spinning. Add to that the rear wheel's 5 gears cassette and a working derailleur and you can compensate the weight of the flywheel by gradually speeding up.

Want more power? Lower losses in the generator chain by using bike chain vs Vbelts. Vbelts depend on friction to work, chain does not. Many decades of experimentation for reduced loss has gone into bicycles. Move the alternator closer and make extend the bike chain to it.

Very interesting DIY project, looking forward to seeing more of this. A thought occurs: a much more niche use for this. Instead of thinking of it in terms of providing all your household energy, thinking of it in terms of a combination of a backup power system for a green energy system and a means to deal with cabin fever during winter; a means to get some exercise indoors on a cold, cloudy winter's day while simultaneously having something to show for that work by recharging a low battery bank that's hasn't been getting recharged sufficiently from the connected solar panels that haven't been getting enough sun. Something like this might work for me; I don't need tons of electricity in winter, mostly just enough for a laptop, a cell phone, and lights.

That tensor is not strong enough, a fixed tensor is much preferred than a low loaded sprint, in the old times all cars had manual tensors for example. Also, would be muuuch better to put the alternator closer to the wheel, and reduce the belt length as much as possible. Since 20 years ago, car alternators are equiped with an special pulley called clutch pulley, that only allows turning in one direction, this way, the variable counter resistance of the alternator shaft is atenued, and also helps to keep the rotational speed more stable when the rotational torque source is not constant (this is particularly useful with small diesel engines, as it's combustion is very "aggressive" and produce kinda sinusoidal functions, from the torque output point of view)

i plan on doing this. i do not know much about mechanical engineering, but i know i have 32 120ah lead acid batteries that i bought last year for my solar system and it seems like once they are done storing chemical energy i could use them as weight in a gravity system that can generate electrical power. use the sun to pick them up during the day, then let them fall back down to create electrical energy. i dont know where to begin but its in the back of my head. i think a battery will still be needed. to power switches, gears, sensors etc etc. might need a 10 story elevator shaft size vertical corridor and 2000 lbs all in one spot as one mass, rather than what i envisioned in my basement with many smaller systems lifting and dropping the weights.

Use a big tank of water. It fills up at the top and spills when it reaches the bottom. Empty it can now be easily lifted back up to the top by an opposite tank of water that has become filled. The pulley that powers the alternator also mechanically powers the pulley that is rotating the tracks for the tanks, like a water wheel.

Congratulations on the effort of building this. I was really surprised in the previous video where you simply stated the power of the alternator at 1440W and somehow expected that it is possible for you to generate that? Because it is YOU who drives the generator. Conservation of energy and cyclists knowledge. Cycling Analytics has a great statistics article on "cycling power output" where you can see that a sustainable power output can range from 150-400W depending if you could qualify to win the next tour de France :) I would say don't expect much more than 200W long term (2h). Most people can achieve highest long term energy output at pedaling cadence of 70-80rpm and their heart rate below 150bpm. Good luck and enjoy the exercise ;)

Pro Tips: Add permanent magnets to the alternator rotor, in the gaps between the field fingers, to reduce or eliminate the need to waste power on the field windings. Use the middle speeds on the bicycle, where there is little or no sideways deflection on the chain to cause extra friction. Use the smallest drive belt you can find, both the width and the thickness, because you are never going to be transferring more than 500 watts (500 newton-meters per second) and much of the power is in the form of high speed rather than large force. And a 1 or 2-kg flywheel of plain flat steel at the alternator, and a larger battery, able to soak up more charging current at 12 volts.

@@rogerrabbit7469 I'm glad you did this and also shared it. I'm thinking of a build using two flywheels with two clutches each: One clutch controls when you are feeding its flywheel, and the other clutch controls the flywheel feeding the alternator or motor. Then alternate the flywheels. While one flywheel feeds the alternator, you can be feeding the other flywheel. Maybe if you can build that, and I know it's going to be involved, but hopefully I'll run into you again and see how it worked.

In 2014, 2 French KZbinrs made such a bike generator. To do so, they used a 36V DC motor as a generator, and friction wheel as the link between the motor and the backwheel of the bike. They reached a peak of more than 500W with this setup. Maybe have a look at this ! The name of the channel is "Incroyables expériences" They do not have a lot of videos on the channel, so finding a 2014 video is still really easy.

I've been enjoying this series. Just to get a little bit more out of the alternator, try to make the alternator pulley as small as possible. This should give you the maximum RPM on the alternator. If you really want to go crazy, you can do a 2 belt system with the bicycle tire reducing to a small pulley, which in turn would be attached to a larger pulley. The larger pulley would have a second belt to the alternator. I'm sure you understand the benefit i'm describing. This seems very fun.

@Mikey Mike I agree, torque would be way beyond what someone can sustain peddling. Though if we could get a heavy flywheel into the setup that should also help to even out the variances, much like a capacitor smooths output before a load. The whole structure would likely need to be redesigned out of metal though, as a heavy flywheel carries a massive amount of energy so don't want that flying away. I also feel like the extra belts and pulleys and whatnot are all adding too much resistance for the legs, perhaps a chain like the bike's own would be better suited to reducing losses. Overall though that's a much bigger project, one I'd love to see though @GreatScott! maybe there's someone like @ColinFurze in Germany that can help you fabricate?

I think a great way to improve this setup is by looking more closely at off the shelf automotive parts. The belt tensioner for example can be replaced by an automotive one which has much lower rolling resistance. Also moving the bike closer to the alternator would be ideal, or even finding a way to mount the alternator onto the bike with some welded on metal brackets and a good automotive tensioner would really make the setup more efficient. You could also look into making the ribbed pulley on the alternator smaller so that it spins much faster. There are also higher output alternators on medium duty trucks. Pickup trucks have 200amp alternators and they are fairly low cost. Would make for a pretty nice upgrade for the 120amp unit you have! I love this series, please keep trying to make it better!

The fact that you can regulate the strength of the (not permanent) magnets inside the alternator is not a bug, it's a feature. There is no "right" exciter current. Any normal permanent magnet generator is basically like an alternator with some fixed exciter current. Why not be creative? You can build a little Arduino controlled setup that regulates the exciter current to keep the speed constant. That way you have no resistance while speeding up and then if you pedal harder the alternator applies more resistance and produces more power, if you pedal less hard it applies less resistance and produces less power. If you want a simpler solution, you could also add a way to control the current while riding the bike (like a gear shifter). The possibilities are endless.
@ProposeleSS
@ProposeleSS 2 жыл бұрын
well, there is a way to optimise exciter current. this is done by measuring phase angle between output voltage and current. when there is no difference ( cos(phi) equals to 1) there is no reactive power. this is done on the industrial scale. it would be easy to implement with some arduino code

@1900OP
@1900OP 2 жыл бұрын
@@ProposeleSS You're mistaken, there is no reactive power here. What you refer to is synchronous generators connected to a 3 phase network, you can have your generator take reactive power or supply reactive power to the network to balance the power factor, but that happens because the excitation current can set the EMF voltage at the output of the generator to be below, equal, or higher than the line voltage. Here the output is rectified, and it's DC.

But when you think about it, that is based on his current Electric bill, and it's only that much because we are all used to just plugging in stuff and not worrying about how much electricity we use! I think that if he began to look at what he can replace with something more efficient, he will cut down on his bill and the figure of 1.43 year's will come down!

Another idea for you. If you take a piece of that type of belt and glue it to the bike wheel, you then can place the alternator belt inside those tracks and reduce any inclination for the belt to go side to side ! ! ! The unit might have a use for some of the sailors when they are in particualy foggy areas as they sometimes are relying on solar panels and their engines. But, if they are in the middle of the ocean, they can't afford to waste the diesel . So, they just sit there, needing something to do, and little by little losing all of their battery power. And, at the same time, gaining weight and being bored.

Mining generally only earns a bit above the cost of electricity. So, say that's $0.15 per kWh. 200 watts for one hour would be .2kwh, or 3 cents of crypto. Doable, but not the best. He should probably just put a halfbarrell VAWT on it to turn it and leave it outside.

You need to tie the output to the exciter so it self excites. That is how all alternators work. Essentially this is what you did with the one wire version. You can also buy an external regulator with you first version. That regulator has a screw to set the output. You could then let the alternator self excite by hooking the output to the field. Then you could put a knob on the external regulator... or you could like the output to allow reasonable peddling.

Lots of lost energy in both the belt friction and the alternator’s cooling fan. Suggest ditching the rear rim and mounting chain driven hoverboard motor where the rear axle is. If the motor RPM isnt high enough, may need to insert an intermediate shaft. Great video and project. Love your scientific approach!

Maybe you can add a flywheel, improve the tensioner so that you can tension it once and then fix it in place (using some screws) and use a bearing for less friction, add some (super)capacitors, a buck/boost converter for stabilizing the voltage, some batteries with BMS, an usb-C charger, an energy counter that shows how much kWh were produced, etc (end of thinking capacity) :D

Honestly 200W is pretty impressive, and likely the most you could really expect to get out of this system. Professional cyclists, for example, can supposedly generate in the order of 400W (based on a minute of research), so 200W seems like a pretty respectable result. About the only improvements you could make to the system are in reliability and consistency instead.
@epicpl6376

400W is there FTP which means, they can hold it continiously. While sprinting, a professional cyclist can paddle over 1000W for a few seconds to minutes.

400W is what they are able to generate using the body's aerobic system, which means they are able to hold at that power level for hours. Peak power levels (using anaerobic system) are above 1kW. Even an amateur can sustain 1000W for a couple of seconds.
