The reason for chinese not buying a clock for someone as a gift, it's because the word '送钟’ （gifting a clock) has the same pronunciation as '送终‘ （attending the funeral of a senior family member). It is considered as bad luck to the recipient.

'Clock' has a same pronunciation as 'end/finish' in Mandarin. 'Giving a clock' sounds the same as sending your dying families away.
