Product Review: THRIVE Tropical Essential Kit

I have this kit and I have had it for over a year now. I built a custom background for it and made it into a vivarium. (No fish or water in the bottom, just a drainage layer and the coco substrate plus an Josh’s frogs vivarium soil.) The tank itself works perfectly for my crested gecko and all the plants. I wouldn’t put anything smaller than a sub adult crested gecko however because of the door issue he mentioned. There is a small gap at the bottom that something small could escape from or that something strong could push out of. My crestie never messes with it though. I don’t use much of what came with the tank. Like he said the food ledge is pretty crappy and I find doesn’t stay up long with spraying so I switched it with the Pangea ledge. The vine is ok, I use it in another terrarium that doesn’t have live plants. But just for the terrarium itself the price is a steal. Like he said the same size from the other brands with nothing included is over $200. And make sure to check around Christmas time because I got mine for $139 on sale. A ridiculously amazing price. 😊

Hey so do you think I could use this tank for a per minute set up? I have noticed my crestie gets stressed in a huge encloser I tried a 55 gal and he was just stressed all the time and wouldn’t eat I down sized him and he did a lot better. So do you think I could use this as a permanent set up?

Mrrj 44 I just use 2 led grow lamps for the plants. I don’t use the lamps that came with the tank.

I have this encloser but I don’t use the UVB because it’s not that great of quality I did use it but switched, other than that and the fact that the food dish isn’t that good I rly like the encloser.

I learn so much from your videos..... after watching this one I am confident I picked the right right size. The vine problem could be fixed by ordering a set of vine, deco on amazon, their sets come with extra suctions cups. This set is a starter kit, yes it is going to need more but looks like overall a decent set. (I wish i had known about it to start mine)

I got the same one but I agree (the food dish was like styrofoam and it easily fell apart). Other than that, it works really well (also for the one I bought suction cups came with the vines) and thank you for the helpful review ^^

This is great because they put more into the hardware vs. decor. I plan to make a bioactive enclosure when my crestie grows up and the price is amazing and it includes heating elements. I could seal in the feeding ledge with some crestie-safe sealant.

I was looking for a tank cause I wanted to get a crestie, I got one of these kits for $99! I don't use the uvb, but I do use the heat bulb because I live in a basement in Wisconsin. I don't like the food ledge and have another one coming. I attached the background and might make a custom one later. I put the cocofiber at the bottom w sphagnum on top for humidity. I used the top hole to help lead a digital thermometer/hydrometer. I'm very happy with it

I have this enclosure and the vine does have a metal wire inside of it, it’s like a solder wire, they put it further in the vine so there isn’t metal wires sticking out of the ends. I can promise you there is a wire, I cut the vine so it would fit better in the way I wanted and I wrapped the metal in the top mesh so it holds, he doesn’t mess with the metal but it does have metal and is bendable!

I love that you did this review. I have thrive tanks for my two bearded dragons, leopard gecko, and my (soon to get crested gecko). I love the starter kits they come with and they contain more than the other ones normally do. I'm planning on getting a crested gecko on Sunday and went to get the tank/decoration so I could get it set up ahead of time. The one I got even has the built in background that I can take out if I want or the gecko doesn't yes it, and the front opening forts make is so much easier. Most of the thrive product are cheaper and more worth the money.

Look at the tank kit from Zilla. The one I got was HORRIBLE. The lid alone is an issue because it is so hard to put on and take off. There are other issues but I'll leave it a suprise

Interesting. Looks like a product that one would need to try before coming to a conclusion. That door locking issue is the key one for me. Everything else looks a bit flimsy to be honest. @@caedensteele581 I really like it to. My door squeeked but while cleaning (and the gecko was out) I sprayed wd-40 on the hinges and let it air out. And it stopped squeeking. I have a fogger in mine but theere is a gap big enough for the gecko to escape. So i put duct tape around it to stop that.

I found one of these ( just the tank and the lights ) on Facebook marketplace after someone kept a baby chameleon in it and realized it wasn't right for just $70. It's never recommended to cohab unless you are mating them. If you are mating them you shouldn't keep them in all the time, as their mating behavior can be both stressful and put their lives at risk. They are very solitary animals. If you see them next to eachother, they arnt cuddling or enjoying eachothers company. They are competing for space. There is so much misinformation in this hobby and it is getting better and better in its husbandry. I'm not trying to gaitkeep but at this point it is considered very outdated to cohab. I am very passionate about this hobby and crested geckos. Reptiles don't deserve the bare minimum of space or territory.
