I think saying that Nakayama was too ambitious for his own good is a way to discredit what he's actually done for this production in particular and the Mappas second production line as a whole, because, unlike what a lot of people are saying, he clearly knew what he was doing and made a lot of steps to make such an ambitious production possible. Case in point - the Nakayama animators employment program which was a way to address the issue of animator shortage by hiring inhouse animators. Under this program animators such as lington, 10+10 and shoushi joined Mappa and participated heavily in CSM( especially in EDs) This is the way KyoAni and Ufotable(which the current Mappa and the large majority of the industry are a direct opposite of) operate and is the only way for this businesses to sustain themselves and everybody knows it. CSM had dedicated costume designers and animation directors, which is also a rare occurrence to my knowledge. The Photography department had suddenly become more capable and though there's no way to confirm it, I wouldn't doubt the fact that Nakayama worked on that too since his preanimated CSM PV looked 10x better than anything in JJK composite wise and was worked on by the same Dop. The main issue i feel like stems from the conditions Mappa has given them. If they do a movie afterwards I would feel like that would be a much better showing for them and not only quality wise, but also direction wise as i would personally love to see Nakayama's reach go further than his own episodes.

Chainsaw man being made in less then one year is insane. It puts how good it does look in a whole new light. I mean it looks like something so unreal and so ambitious it's crazy to think it had just a normal 1 year schedule. I absolutely love the artistic style and think it elevates the story a ton but it just does not seem possible to be done cosistently for possibly three or four 12 ep seasons.

I honestly thought before the series aired that it had a RELATIVELY decent schedule compared to other Mappa productions due to the ambition and announcements made about new work conditions. I knew it wouldn't be anywhere near ideal but i at least thought it was better. But 1 SINGULAR YEAR? Jfc that's terrible. Wild that so many people say this show looked bad. Was practically a 12 episode movie. I get that people didn't like how some moments looked, but a lot of the hate was just weird and exaggerated. People were legit saying that the CGI looks like Playstation 1 graphics. A lot of it was probably a counterreaction to the massive hype the show had, rather than a genuine opinion about the show's quality.

Spy x Family has the benefit of being a coproduction between Wit and Cloverworks. Since the work is split, the production schedule is much more forgiving

The schedule could have been much better I agree. But lets not forget that chainsaw man production happen in the midst of global pandemic where Japan & China were hit super hard resulting in 100s of anime getting delayed even to this day. It might have been enough time to polish everything if the circumtances were normal. And also let's not forget they were using their own money and risking everything in this so they might not have the luxury of delaying it even further.

The pandemic only compounds issues in the industry, because it only affects the negative aspects; large amounts of outsourcing to foreign companies becomes difficult, but that's about it. Projects shouldn't depend on that anyway. Let's not forget we got projects like Yuukaku-hen and mob psycho 3 during the same period, and those shows weren't even a little bit hurt by the pandemic. The freelance and outsourcing industries are to be used as tools, but today for most projects they are necessities.

Yeah it really is a shame. We can only hope that Manabu has some sort of plan we're not seeing, but right now that seems unlikely. The final product had episodes far greater than what most animes will ever achieve in their runtime however it makes me think what if they pushed for more? My main hope now for the sequel is that Nakayama tries to stick to his vision while allowing for some experimentation and exploration. While also being paired with a better schedule and less caught up staff. For me the biggest downside was Yoshihara's lack of appearances. It felt like he wasn't even the action director due to the schedule and his other priorities. In the end we did get like 65% of the what staff can do, which is about 200% relative to other show's quality, but imagine what a 100% output would've looked like...

I hope they take a break from JJK after season 2, but that's just wishful thinking. Anyways it's more likely that they will take a break from CSM since the manga is already extremely popular and pretty far from ending, so they can sacrifice a bit more time on it, even more so if it's a movie which is pretty much guaranteed to receive an amazing audience reception. I wonder what direction the AoT team would go after the S4 P3 Ep2 though, and the Jigokuraku and Campfire Cooking teams. So currently MAPPA must have 4 teams and the ones under the most pressure are probably the JJK CSM team. I hope the AoT team gets dissipated and goes on to reinforce the Jigokuraku and JJK teams, which would kind of fix some of the production issues. The Campfire Cooking team would probably end up creating Idaten Deities but idk.

JJK S2's production is absolutely not over by now. Most anime keep being produced as they're airing. There are only a few outliers, like mob psycho 100 or KyoAni projects that finish production before airing. Tengoku Daimakyou was almost completed by the time the first episode aired, so it should be completed by now, which is also great. On the other end, there's Bocchi the rock, wonder egg priority, Mha S5 etc where the episodes were being turned in just the day before those episodes were to air, which is really bad. I'm assuming that JJK S2 is not even half finished in its production yet, and will join these shows in terms of horrible production practices.

There is still something else to look forward to it. I'd say just don't have high expectations for it and expect for it to be good or ok. It's not gonna be great or really good like some others but it could be ok or good. I know to some that's not ok as every project or manga should get a good anime adaption like CSM or demon slayer or whatever good series out there but with how the current industry is today. It's hard to afford it unfortunately and we can only hope things will go better somewhat but that'll take a miracle at that point with how this industry is. So don't beat yourself too hard on it. Just have reasonable expectations, give it a try and see if you can have fun who knows maybe you might like it. It will definitely have some best moments and will look good sometimes that's for sure but it will continuously be ok for the most part which is the best case scenario for Jigo considering it's sandwiched between major IP's around it.

Interesting video. But yeah, the moment you said that Episode 8 of CSM shows some cracks on the production issues, the moment I admit that I kind of hesitate so much so that I got a bad vibes about CSM even if I still want to support it. This reminds me of something, do you think that Ryu Nakayama is still a good director for CSM or not? Also yeah, after watching some of your video. I can conclude that the production issues are not an isolated incident not just in one studio but considering the high profile stuff that the anime industry had to pump... I can see why it's a problem.

I don't understand how the Chainsaw Man anime was so well regarded. There was a lot of negativity while it was airing, now, at least from the wider fanbase it seems like it was overwhelmingly liked, why, I have no idea. Subpar animation, subpar direction. It tried to have this cool and soulful atmosphere around itself, and perhaps some of the people that were making it did feel that way, but the end project didn't give me anything with even half the excitement on screen that the manga was able to constantly achieve.

It's AOT realted but PLEASE I need an answer, ANY kind of answers; I just noticed that AOT Part 3 Ep01 had 7, SEVEN, Producers and I don't understand How and Why is that? I have never seen this many producers on any other project, so what does that imply? AOT has always been weird production-wise but this really stunned me for some reason.

Producers are mostly there to serve as representatives for the different companies on the production comittee, a show having a lot of producers does not mean it's going through any type of issues, it just means it has a lot of companies backing it up.

6:30 manko, don't you think The schedule that you're probably guessing is too bad for a production like this? Like if it is, then the schedule is pretty bad for this episode alone. And even in the latter half of the episodes. There was episode 10 and Most of 12 and 8 that were pretty much (specially 10) were like The first half. No matter how talented the team is. They can't produce this near movie like for every episode when the schedule is bad for an episode like 6 itself. Like (yname) said JJK and CSM shares like 20% in the staff. And JJK0 and CSM shares like less than 10% if you look at the Credits as he said. And it's pretty much Normal for big veterans to work on Multiple shows (like outside of CSM and JJK) there were other projects in the other studios as well.

But if CM suffered all of those issues, why they didn't use each animator's cut in the blu rays that ended up unused because of the schedule? And the blu rays were released quickly compared to lets say AOT which is from the same studio (I know they r different teams). AOT blu rays takes around 6 months (from what I remember), and there are a lot of minor changes but does not justify the time taken. On the other hand, we have CM blu rays which got released around 1 months after finishing!

@@harman4321 It's true and that isekai anime by Mappa is called "Campfire cooking in another world with my absurd skill". It looks to be a very successful venture for Mappa atleast based on the anime and what's it's trying to achieve. It definitely did achieved what Mappa is hoping or expecting for with the anime and it continues to be a mini success for the studio. Edit: By I mean success I meant profits it's giving to the studio. Japanese folks loves their food and with the anime being about food having delicious delicacy from various big restaurants in Japan as a sponsor making those folks buy those restaurants products or what not because the anime and how it sponsors it is really good and enticing to them. Also the food in the anime and how it's made looks very good and delicious that I sometimes get hungry looking at it with how it's done whenever I watch it. Plus with Mappa being the only one in the committee for that anime they are sure raking in alot of profits from it all by themselves. It's like a mini CSM for them based on how their the only ones in the committee but just a small project from Mappa that is getting a very good success for such a small business venture for the studio. I know for sure that the staff and the director is really happy from the success their getting from such a small work of theirs. If this anime is lucky it might even get a season 2 but for now it remains unsure for what it's fate will be after it ends. If you're planning to watch it don't expect it to be a very good well written show like it can be really good but not something special when watching it like any other ok isekai in general. The only thing to look forward into it is if you like isekai and cooking and food in general. It has an ok story that isn't as bad as some other isekai shows but nothing special about it. It's just ok. The characters are fine I guess and the humour is ok. But nothing out of the ordinary except for how it has great animations for food and how it's made and some good animation in some other scenes which of course makes sense as it's just a cooking show so it not having good animation for food and cooking would be a great blunder and miss for the anime and the staff to make. Just have a very reasonable expectations to it that is all.

@@harman4321 Yes, more like a really big supermarket/mall sponsered. Cooking Isekai is their second fully funded shows by Mappa after CSM. If anything, they want less sponsered (from production committee) and want to self-funded every anime project and so, gets all the profit.

I'm glad you mentioned MHA. There was a Yutapon cut in one of the recent episodes that looked like he literally gave up halfway through. That show just keeps going downhill and I don't know what Bones is thinking. When someone like Yutapon has no time to make it look good you know something is seriously wrong. Do they even have anything else lined up after Mob Pcycho cause if not then what is going on with them?

Yutapon was clearly rushed during that cut, but I disagree with saying that it "keeps goind downhill". If anything, S6 has been the most consistently good since S2. Also, you say "what is Bones thinking" but this is not their problem. The problem is the anime having a bad schedule because it gets yearly seasons. They made BSD and Mob recently and both of them finished ahead of schedule.

It may not be as bad as S5 but I've seen beautifully animated shots that never made it into the final cut because of time constraints. Something is going on with Bones. That said I hope it's because they are working on something else rather than that just being a shitty schedule for no reason cause season 5 was mega rushed and not just in the animation department but in terms of story as well as I'm sure manga readers would agree and that was all (presumably) because of the movie.

It does not take a genius to figure out why it can't be as a good as other Bones shows, specially when sub-studio C literally only works on My Hero and nothing else.

WIT dropped AoT most likely because they were given a shit schedule and they wanted to do other things besides AoT for the time being. The companies that are part of the AoT production committee didn't want a repeat of another 4 years without the anime so they hired MAPPA to do it instead. Money was probably another lesser factor.

Personally, I get why Ryu Nakayama would want to give a high profile Shonen Jump manga a unique style of direction. However, while a cinematic, realistic style of direction would fit with Fujimoto's core love for movies, I feel like for the actual manga, with the scratchy lineart, exaggerated character expressions and crazy designs, a heavily stylised, wild, raw and sketchy approach to the visuals would've fit much better, and solved the stylised animators not being able to work on it problem. I feel like the realistic approach to the adaptation could've worked much better for another kind of series, maybe like Vinland Saga or something.

Many of the Japanese fans would agree with you. I personally don't mind the realistic approach but that debate is what started the whole "replace Nakayama" petition. I will say though that his approach somewhat hurts the comedy of the show but to each their own.

This is a take that I never really understood ( P.S read the CSM manga twice ) The art of the manga really only gets dirty/scratchy etc. when it comes to action scenes. It's pretty clean and simple apart from them ( not like Dorohedoro which is dirty 24x7 ) Along with that, the character designs, their personalities and even the world itself is very grounded and human. Fujimoto himself also keeps his art consistent throughout the entire series and there isn't exactly much exaggeration. And that consistency and human tone is what they focussed whole-heartedly on for the anime. I also don't really get what people were expecting comedy-wise. It's literally the same as the manga. Heck, some moments had me laughing more in the anime tbh ( eg : that one moment in the hotel arc when Power laughed at Kobeni ) Apologies for the rant, I'm just getting a little tired seeing people say that the anime is different from the manga when it honestly elevated a lot of the manga

It had me rolling when I read it but in the anime it's a very somber moment with sad music in the background. You could argue that I just interpreted the moment in the wrong way but honestly the manga made it seem like it was supposed to be funny and so I laughed.
