I was wondering if someone had the latest Grin all axle hub with L1019 on the disc side. Could the opposite side cover be replaced with a cassette cover to be used now as a rear hub motor 🤔? The design seem simple yet very efficient.
@GrinTechnologies Жыл бұрын
The axle is different in the rear motors. The cassette freehub will not fit over the diameter of the front axle, it needs to slide over a 15mm shaft.

wish I could still do that type of work, diameter ? can you just bolt on a couple of wheel rims and seat a tyre direct to motor ?
@GrinTechnologies2 жыл бұрын
Yup. It's a 20" wheel diameter sizing. For most situations lacing the standard hub into a 20" bicycle rim works great and is a lighter wheel. But for heavy cargo applications it's nice not have any worry about spokes breaking and that's where these injection molded composite wheels are quite handy.

Would these wheels be better for the lateral loads a trike would experience? How soon might we be able to order?
@GrinTechnologies2 жыл бұрын
The hope is that they would be tougher and more resilient than spoked wheels for these kinds of cargo applications and that's exactly what's being tested right now. Future tests will involve the wheel being inclined by 15 degrees on the testing drum to simulate the lateral forced present when cornering. Properly built spokes wheels are incredibly strong too and are lighter weight, but if they ever go out of tension (like from a dented rim due to impact) then they can quickly succumb to spoke breakage.
@Jerbrown Жыл бұрын
@@GrinTechnologies Hey! Did anything come of this test? I just emailed to order a couple of these wheels. I'd like to know if the strength when cornering is greater than the spoked wheel option. Thanks!

@masters40 Жыл бұрын
Really no need for a 36H hub if you're using a decent rim. I have a Grin All Axle front hub on my tandem and it is working flawlessly. We have a combined rider/bike weight of close to 500 lbs.

What voltage range is acceptable for the hall sensor PCB inside the motor? Is it +5v, or is 12v possible? And is it open collector or is it push pull output?
@GrinTechnologies2 жыл бұрын
The standard hall sensors usually work up to 24V on the rail and have an open-collector output with the signal pull-up resistor on the motor controller PCB. That makes them compatible with a wide range of voltages.
@EricPeelMusic Жыл бұрын
That was a two-sided load test. How much is safe for this hub/wheel combo for single sided loading? And what about lateral loading? I can imagine taking my dream build off road, approaching a steep lean and snapping a wheel before it rolls over and gets totaled. Any assurance this won’t likely happen?
@GrinTechnologies Жыл бұрын
Visit cargobike-wheels.com/ and have a look Ultimately the strength for single sided loading depends on how you build your own axle on the vehicle. The motor is hollow and slides over a shaft that is part of your vehicle design, so the key structural component is on your end.
@EricPeelMusic Жыл бұрын
Ok, that does make sense and I understand. Thank you. Now say the load was back to double-sided with the strongest axle of all time but applied at an extreme, 45deg angle. Now, not only is the axle responsible any longer but the hub and its fitment to the CBW3 is being torqued laterally. It will never be 45 irl but it could get steep enough to be a cause for concern. This type of load also occurs on sharp, fast turns on flat, level terrain. Can the all-axle motor and CBW3 handle that type of load?

@@EricPeelMusic Are you planning a cargo bike build, or to challenge Pike's Peak? If the former, when will a cargo bike be in the position you describe? Anything will break if you exert enough force. I need a motor that has about 130mm-150mm bore. I can't seem to find any on the shelf with larger companies; is there something in your lineup that can assist?
@GrinTechnologies2 жыл бұрын
No, that's way outside the league of anything that would be required for ebikes or LEV's. If you have access to a machine shop then in principle you could take the stator and rotor of one of these motors and then modify the side plates to use massive ID ball bearings and then machine your own axle for it.
