That Mahle motor is not an induction motor, it is actually a synchronous motor with electromagnets (instead permanent magnts) in the rotor. This is one of the oldest electric motor designs. The difference here is that the power for the rotor is provided through electromagnetic induction by the special coils, dispensing the need for slip rings that are commonly used.

Worked for Sundstrand Aerospace which is has dominated the aircraft generator market. Only the printed copper is new to me. When I left them is 1997 metal printing didn't exist, however; I have seen copper tube wires and spray cooled motor. I personally assembled and the electrical engineers tested a 350 HP induction motor that was fed up to 1000 Hz 3 phase AC that I could easily pick up including the gear reduction. It had spray cooled windings and liquid cooled rotor. Also worked with PM and switch reluctance motors. Seem strange that your commented about the vibration and noise for a reluctance motor and not for a PM motor. Both need angular positioning to switch at the correct time so both will due to errors in the switching or inductance in the incoming current be subjected to torque issues that cause vibration. The induced rotor current electromagnetic machines have been the standard approach for generator since the 1950's when Sundstrand got into designing their own generators. The problem with brush wear was well know during WWII. You can design them for sea level or high altitude but not both. No one used brushes if the magnetic machine had to work everywhere in an airplane or rocket.

Hydrojet: I want to see the demo in the plastic pool from startup, not after the pool water has got up to speed. There is no way that the spiral, hollow prop design shown here can be as efficient as regular propeller, or waterjet. The mass of the thing sounds very high. The video shots on the dam are not indicative of "acceleration quicker than a propeller". Only advantage I see is the possibility of few moving parts, but there would be other difficulties, like suitable thrust bearings and seals that don't kill the efficiency with friction.
@wompstopm123
@wompstopm123 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnbgibbs one thing to consider is that water would be going directly through the hole in it in a vector so as not to curve around it producing less cavitation at high speed. it also contains the water within it during pressurization unlike a propeller so at low speed it would only be pushing water directly behind it and not around it out to the sides for efficient high speed movement. It probably uses an internal concealed ring of ball bearings to reduce friction. it would seem to be much more expensive to produce than a simple propeller though since you have to get the ball bearings in there and the oil before water tightly sealing it

@@wompstopm123 A traditional propellor is pretty inefficient and from what ive seen has a narrower compromised range of efficiency... The cavitation also generates a lot of vibration and very high levels noise in the marine environment. There is also the damage the prop blades can cause to persons and marine animals...beyond just collisions. 😖 There are more efficient 24% semi traditional props out there already but they seem to be patent and price restrictive. 1500..2000 dollars for an average size three bladed prop.😬 In these pod drives bearings tend to run cooler because they remain in contact with the casings and therefore the water. Its time to cut the waste and start using more efficient drives now....this is critical as their are 8-10 yr legal targets for decarbonising vehicles in the the developed industrial world.. electric motors are already smaller lighter and capable of better performance over a wider performance range. They also dont produce the polution, noise and vibration. Metal 3D printing and new composite material mixes might bring down batch manufacture costs and allow specific tuned/scaled parts to be Printed away from centralised industrial complexes. Rolls Royce has been marketing large rim driven pods for some years . Go to the companies other U tube presentations and see their development boats.

This may be off topic, but I think someone might find it interesting. Piston style over unity electric generator. By AMA Motor segment: 1 motor with bar connected to it standing vertically circular disc connected to bar that has magnets embedded in it surrounded in high permeability material to focus magnets outward pushing force in an upwards direction from top of disc. Power Bar segment (Just name I gave it) Hollowed out cylindrical Bar of material horizontally positioned. donut shaped material with openings around its flat edge for magnets surrounded in high permeability material to be embedded. place these all along the cylindrical bar connected to it solidly. except at far ends of bar. At both ends of bar rings of material that can be magnetically repelled in specific locations (magnetically repelled in specific location is in reference to outside of ring area that faces away from center of bar)(Other side of same ring facing in towards center of bar is capable of magnetic repulsion all around) are connected solidly to bar. points of repulsion on these rings is off set from each other on each end of bar. 3 Hollow donut ring structure with connecting bar: Ring structure has all magnetic repulsion on inside of donut shape & and can rap around the main bar so that the bar wont be causing friction on things as it moves back and forth. 1st positioned around far left of bar, 2nd position center of bar & 3rd positioned on far right of bar. Tube structure is constructed in two parts that fit together on top of each other length wise over main structure & has openings for bar to the Ring structure that is connected around the main bar keeping it from causing friction on structure with it's magnetic padding. This tube structure is designed with material that does not block magnetic fields. Perhaps some type of transparent material glass or other. At both ends of the tube structure there is a built in groove that will house a disc, the groove has 4 points, top bottom left and right that has small magnets embedded in it on the inside so that the pushing force from magnets is pushing in towards the edge of disc that goes in this spot. The disc has ring around it that is repelled by magnetic fields so the 4 small magnets will keep it lined up but it will be able to spin without causing friction on structure. The disc has openings on it's flat side that face inside of tube and magnets surrounded in high permeability material are embedded in this disc. The disc has small bar that is connected to it that goes all the way to the other end of Power bar structure through the center of the hollowed out bar and connects to disc on other end. Disc on other end is set up the same but magnets embedded in it are off set in comparison. As first disc spins the magnetic fields will push against specific spot on disc connected directly to bar, pushing bar in other direction, once bar is fully pushed over, further spinning of disc will then align the other sides magnet to push it back. Tube structure also has half moon shaped protrusion on inside and on both halves so when tube is connected they line up to make a full ring shape on inside of tube, these half moon shaped protrusions have at least 1 small round opening on it's side in middle of curve that faces away from center of bar. The opening has a small magnet embedded in it so magnetic force is repelling out sideways away from center of bar. The protruding ring is positioned to line up slightly further in towards center of bar then the ring of magnetically repelled material connected directly to bar. This way when bar moves to right this magnet will act as a stopper keeping bar from going to far & same setup on other side will keep bar from going to far to left. Copper coil setup: copper coils are wound up as if wound around the width of wood board for a distance equal to width of magnetic ring setup on bar. Wound copper coils are then looped around the tube like a donut lined up perpendicular to magnetic fields. Ends of copper coils are connected into separate construct that will allow electrical current to flow somewhere else. Circular construct is built like a stand that goes around the outside of motor segment. Circular construct has flat ring of high permeability (magnetic field shielding) material that has small openings that will allow magnetic fields through specific locations. Top of circular construct has groove to allow the power bar to balance on. Circular construct can also be placed on other end of power bar so it is balanced. The motor segment is positioned so the disc connected to the bar that is connected to the motor is lined up so the disc passes under the power bars disc that is at end of power bar. The high permeability material keeps the magnetic field from the embedded magnets exerting their force upwards from hitting into the disc in the power bar until just the right moment when the impact will cause the disc in power bar to spin which will perpetuate the piston motion in the power bar. More power bars of the same design are built and positioned around the motor segment in a circular fashion all the way around. The bar connected to the motor can be increased in length to desired height and more of the exact same setup is repeated higher and higher up maximizing the over unity potential of the construct to ridiculous proportions. :D Current from the power bars is diverted to power the motor as needed and all other current is diverted to power my game console or the world. :) Interesting variation to this design would be to connect the spinning discs on far ends of power bar to main bar that magnets are connected to so the magnets spin instead of getting pistoned back and forth. So long as moving magnetic fields are perpendicular to copper wires it should work. By AMA

The hydro jet type motor was a project I was involved with in the mid 90's. It was quite successful and not one marine company wanted it. However, the draw back was the amount of fish kills we created. If we went through a school of fish instead of parting them they got sucked in and blended out the other side. Bigger fish on the surface stopped us dead along with any major debris like wood. The project was later abandoned due to funding, efficiency and environmental concerns. If they can solve these issues at planing and docking speeds then I'd say this propulsion technology might actually make it.

I've always wondered if a wankle motor could be converted to electric. I suppose I should call it a 'rotary motor' since I'm not 105 years old- but the convex/concave nature of the setup could/should allow for magnetic coils to be effectively used. I'm sure it's not likely as efficient as a standard electric motor- but it might be more powerful.

I mean, since the Wankel is an internal combustion motor the design configuration space is significantly different. A way to examine this question would be to ask, "Why don't we see electric motors configured like traditional internal combustion motors", where you have magnetic pistons pushed/attracted by electromagnetic piston heads? I don't really know the answer off the top of my head, but were I to guess its that at the very least any gain from the 'Traditional ICE configuration" electric motor is outweighed by the added complexity of the extra parts that take that motion and turn it into rotary motion.

The higher the motor speed, the higher the horsepower to weight ratio. The only problem is that a 20,000 RPM motor requires an expensive and inefficient transmission to get high torque and lower speeds.
@Nemoticon
@Nemoticon 3 жыл бұрын
"requires an expensive and inefficient transmission" it entirely depends on the tranmission you chose to bolt on to the motor. Unless you are trying to indecate that tranmission boxes are expensive and inefficient by nature, which simply isn't true. They serve a purpose and generally do it VERY well.

Find out how it is being rated. Is it bhp or are they deriving their power like vacuum manufactures do and figuring a full speed stall. Take a spindle motor for instance, if you have a motor rated for 20hp it will deliver that from a standstill and stay out of the way of anything trying to stop it. All without a transmission.

I'm a noob when it comes to electric motors, but shouldn't a higher spinning electric motor produce lesser torque than a low rpm high torque motor (considering both motors are rated at same power consumption) ? Lesser torque means it can be bolted to a transmission found in any standard roadgoing vehicle.
@Nemoticon

Aren't the most common motors on the market for EVs lately synchronous reluctance? Or would you count this as radial flux? I always thought of them as being essentially reluctance motors with carefully managed internal permanent magnets and slots to direct and balance the magnetic flux? The Yamaha one seems interesting. I guess the price is the real question... would be amazing if it was somewhat affordable though.
@BIGGlep
@BIGGlep 2 жыл бұрын
They're called IPM motors. Interior permanent magnet, they are what you said a combination of a permanent magnet and synchronous reluctance. The advantage is they field weaken better than straight SPM (surface permanent magnet) motors. This means that once you move out of the constant torque region (low speeds) they have better high speed performance and a flatter constant power region. They are pretty much the go to in most EV applications although alternatives are being researched

its strange to me that no one has new design with disk and calipers and put the shaft on the out side so it would have grater R.P.M and that way you could make a generators bilt in to the disk like a role of disk then a role of generators disk with the shaft on the out side to get the R.P.M with out using that much amps and you could gear it down for more toque every thing is old

Graphene windings instead of just copper? There are innovative motors using graphene and carbon nanotube wires to improve many things
@fofopads4450
@fofopads4450 3 жыл бұрын
Probably v2 or v10 in the future should try it, but graphene is super expensive atm, not 100% reliable like cooper in 3d printed form and is poorly investigated as 3D printing material, it has a lot of shortcomings, and you are prototyping a radically different motor concept that needs to be proven first with known and cheap materials you can buy anywhere. That's too much of a gamble for an investor and will kill the motor concept before trying it with the usual scrap materials. Imagine this: they will first need to develop a graphene 3D printing material with electromagnetic properties as predictable and constant as cooper's then recalculate the whole motor concept from the ground around graphene EM properties. Then hope for graphene manufacturing price to lower, to be able to sell it at a reasonable price.

@@fofopads4450 Problem is that it's not yet possible to produce singular graphene sheets but still copper wires could just coated using graphene enough to improve drastically conductivity. Heatsinks and some carbon fiber products already utilize amazing properties of graphene. Carbon nanotubes are different from graphene and I don't much about them except their huge tensile strenght.

The problem has never been the motors. The problem has been and continues to be the batteries. A cheap car can go 300 miles or more on a single tank full (charge) of fuel and be recharged (filled) in less than 5 minutes. When electric cars can do that they will become common. Mind you that will change nothing because the electricity STILL has to be produced, the batteries produced, etc etc. If you really want to support a clean cheap abundant energy source that works and is available RIGHT NOW! I recommend you start speaking with your representatives about building nuclear powerplants.
@What-he5pr

I bet it will be natural gas electric fuel cells. Like "bloom boxes".
@ricinro
@ricinro 2 жыл бұрын
Currently solar and wind is much less expensive than nuclear. The time it takes to charge a battery is 99% irrelevant as you can charge at home overnight. I have taken a few road trips in my Tesla and the 20-30 minutes on a supercharger goes by quicker than the other stuff we do on these occasional breaks. We are currently at the start of the "S" curve for adoption of EVs. It will take some time (if ever) for legacy auto to change over to EVs but there are a few EV vehicle manufacturers that are full steam ahead and are constrained with supply issues but these are being addressed. Tesla's are performance vehicles but lower cost Chinese EVs will likely be a better value proposition to replace cheap cars. Batteries are only getting better and cheaper.
@brianmoore1164
@brianmoore1164 2 жыл бұрын
@@ricinro In a couple of generations batteries might be advanced enough to make electric vehicles a practical solution. The best look forward currently says that our grandchildren will still need petroleum fueled vehicles. That you are happy killing a half our every time you need to charge is fine for you, but the vast majority of people are not. They want to get on their way and get to their destination. I would be interested in your source about the price of nuclear energy because most of Europe uses it because it is the cleanest cheapest power generation available. I have visited a nuclear power plant here in the states and they were very happy to tell me that they were the cheapest power supply in all of TVA. Now I don't recommend you ask for a tour. I was allowed in because my brother worked there. He was an electrical engineer there for 28 years and confirmed that nuclear power is by far the cheapest way to produce electricity. If batteries advance significantly and if the price is substantially decreased and if charging time is drastically reduced and if the infrastructure is built and if the toxic waste problems of batteries are delt with, we will desperately need nuclear power. Then there is the moral problems of buying them from a nation that tortures slaves to build them. Thankfully I am old enough that I will never have to rationalize the torture of humans so I can have a cheap electric car.
