@ඇත්ත තිත්තයි Of course. He's just rather too much of a by-the-book traditionalist for me, and he can't or won't see how AI and neuroscience are about to drastically change the Buddhist path. I am in general concerned about the lack of dialogue in Buddhism about the _very_ rapid advance of these extremely powerful forces. So it's not just Alan Wallace. He's such a public figure, however, that he kind of encapsulates the problems I see.
@squamish4244 Жыл бұрын
@ඇත්ත තිත්තයි It's not me and Alan. It's traditionalists vs. innovators. And these are questions that we must deal with *today*, and not put off because they are tough questions. I can challenge pretty much anyone but a spiritual teacher, and when I do, people act like I'm not allowed to. That's not right. And yes, I do have blind spots and biases.
@squamish4244 Жыл бұрын
@ඇත්ත තිත්තයි I'm glad we agree about how a modern, rationalist approach is needed. As for myself - well, there's nothing fancy about my approach. I just observe what's going on in the world right now. You've seen all the same headlines about how fast AI is advancing. You've probably seen the news about brain-decoding (decoding brainwaves and forming images and words on a screen) and brain stimulation to alter states of consciousness. So I look at this stuff, and I look to spiritual teachers for guidance on these topics, and mostly they are silent. It worries me. We need a lot more discussion about how this will all be integrated. We can't keep them separate. Nor do we want to. I think technology can help a great deal with spirituality. Psychedelics are a kind of technology, and they have really helped me in a way that thousands of hours of meditation could not. Neurofeedback has really helped me too. And there is a lot more being worked on in labs right now that will rapidly accelerate the path for everyone, if we use it right. Anyway, I don't want to ramble on or bore you. Those are just my thoughts and why I brought the issue up in the first place. Thank god the spiritual traditions have already established a strong foundation, because otherwise, I would be a lot more worried about all these developments and freaking out like a lot of people are right now about AI. But I'm not, because I have a strong faith in the dharma and in enlightenment as the ultimate goal of existence.

Copernicus made three observations of Mercury, with errors of −3, −15 and −1 minutes of arc. He made one of Venus, with an error of −24 minutes. Four were made of Mars, with errors of 2, 20, 77, and 137 minutes. Four observations were made of Jupiter, with errors of 32, 51, −11 and 25 minutes. @@nickshelbourne4426 What he was trying to say by using poor words, is that we need wisdom, especially in valor and meaning field, all the problems in the world come from ignorance basically, the ''movement'' that did come from india, is the only one that absorves the tool of science very well and at the same time probe the conscience and ''soul'' at the same time, they are the closes thing to a human collective conscience, like a corporation, but a corporation have only one dimention, hunger, like the CIA have many dimensions but it is a metaphor, it is a machine, but the most complete collective organization that the humanity did produce i think Buddhism at least the closest in my opinion, because if we finally have a consciousness the humanitys problem will be gone basically, we need more wisdom right now and consciousness, not just comfort, the prove that we dont ''need'' is was the many ages that humanity did live in caves just fine back them hehe, so you see, even the literal sense of buddhist meditating in caves will be what we most need literally, only of course if he can discover how to fix our biggest problem, that it is not hunger, it is far more, management problems like greed or others corruptions, root of wars (ignorance) etc...

Science and technology aimed specifically at understanding the mind could produce huge increases in well-being. Neurofeedback, brainwave entrainment, photobiomodulation etc. are all technologies that have helped countless people work through deep mental obscurations and emotional pain and even in some cases triggered awakening experiences. These are seeds of the technology to come which will produce results akin to years meditating in caves but on a much shorter timescale and with far less effort. For instance: www.ttconf.org/ People get all weirded out by this stuff, but it's no weirder than the techniques Buddhism has already developed, which meet the definition of technology anyway.

This is to start conversation with you about a certain aspect of buddhist philosophy. People including you and me have world views. Qbism, buddism ,quantum etc. But what is common is that we all have an ability to hold a view. (It is not simply "we" are holding a view. We is defined by the view, which may not be prominent ) This ability to hold view,see,hear,perceive is what seeing,hearing ,thinking is based on, it only manifest with perceiving although it is not perceiving but the potential for perception .hence world and world views are build upon it. If you have studied Vedha hindu, might have heard about brahama creator/destroyer of the world ,and they refer to this ability This ability is also a construct and ttherefore is illusion and based on awijja/ignorance . If ability is construction everything based on it is an illusions. That is why buddhist can not hold world view. It is not because it is wrong ,simply because it could not exist

From other talks I've seen of him, he seems to be passionate about demonstrating the short comings of physical science. I do not know why this is necessary. Buddhists generally do not need to be convinced of the importance of introspection. At times, it seems he may have a vendetta against physical science. It is a strange attitude to find in a studied Buddhist. However, I am no Buddhist myself, so I may have the wrong impression of how Buddhism shapes attitude.
@squamish42446 жыл бұрын
I am a Buddhist, and Alan Wallace gets under my skin. He does seem to have a vendetta against physical science, one that appears to have only gotten worse over the years. I think there are a couple of things going on here. First, he is annoyed about the persistent dogma that consciousness is material and emerges from the brain, and how that dogma gets in the way of progress in studying the mind. I share this sentiment. Second, he knows that science is beginning to make serious inroads into areas that used to be Buddhism's 'special' domain, like the knowledge of the inner workings of the mind. He saves his harshest criticisms and snide remarks for neuroscience, as it is the most threatening. If neuroscience continues to advance at the speed with which it is doing so now, it is very likely that in another 20 years or so it will have surpassed Buddhism in many ways in terms of precise knowledge of what is going on in the mind. More importantly, this will enable technologists to develop far more powerful means of enlightenment than meditation. This should be great news, and it is for ordinary joes like me, but for someone like Alan who has devoted 50 years to meditation and built his career and identity around it, he seems like he is in denial that the techniques he teaches could be rendered obsolete within his own lifetime. Also, as an aside, he disparages antidepressants and psychiatric medications in general on other videos. This is a dangerous position to take, as it might make some people think that they don't need their medications or that to be a 'real Buddhist' you shouldn't take them. He isn't in a position to give such advice.
@squamish42446 жыл бұрын
My essential point is that Alan Wallace is far too traditional to offer practical solutions for the 21st Century. Among all the people I have encountered who have shown interest in the spiritual path, the one thing I keep encountering again and again is the desperate need for better tools (in Buddhist terms, skillful means) than the ones we have. Meditation involves a tremendous amount of time and energy that almost everyone doesn't have access to, and isn't going to anytime soon. And if you are lucky you might get enlightened in a few decades, maybe a lifetime, maybe NEXT lifetime. If business, politics, sports or any other human endeavor promised this sort of miserable success rate, it would be laughed at. "You'll be a great athlete if you work really hard...a great athlete in your next life." But in Buddhism, teachers are not challenged enough and teachings are give a pass because they are old. We need people to call bullshit on this. And yes, of course neuroscience is stuck in its own dogma. But the problem with Alan Wallace is he is just as guilty of glossing over its staggering findings and implications as neuroscience is Buddhism.

I've spent 14 years within and outside of Tibetan Buddhism, I've suffered a massive nervous breakdown on psychedelics, been a drug addict, detoxed, struggled with anxiety and depression, and dealt with kundalini syndrome. I've seen what meditation can and cannot do for most mere mortals. My conviction is that if we do not find new skillful means of practice, and if we remain afraid to challenge longstanding wisdom, Buddhism will never succeed in spreading beyond a fraction of society. The great masters will always be a tiny elite. That is not going to help us face a rapidly changing world with many serious challenges. Other Buddhist masters have different opinions than Alan. For instance, this from Shinzen Young, who is at least as qualified as Alan. It's a long quote, but worth seriously considering: _"So, the practical consequence of new understandings is, possibly, new technologies for getting to the classical results of the past in meditation...there are important things about enlightenment that none of the greatest masters of the past, including the Buddha himself, knew. Because they couldn’t have known. Because they didn’t have a scientific knowledge of the world. So, if that is indeed the case, then there are new and important things that can be said about classical enlightenment that is pretty much universal around the world in all of the meditative traditions._ _If there aren’t new and important things to be said, if the last word and the best word on this subject was uttered 2,500 years ago and there’s no room for fundamental improvement, then there’s not much hope for humanity._ _I take the Buddha as being the Sir Issac Newton of world spirituality. There’s science before Newton and there’s science after Newton and there was just a quantum jump after Newton’s formulation. And I think 2,500 years ago we had something like that happen in human spirituality with the historical Buddha. The question is, there was Newton, but then within a short period of time there was Einstein and Planck and, before that even, Maxwell, then there’s Richard Feynman. There are these people who took Newton and developed relativistic and quantum physics from that-it doesn’t replace Newton, but it takes it to the next step. So, I’m waiting for the next step-it has been 2,500 years, who will play the Einstein to the Buddha’s Newton?"_

I wouldn't say quantum physics torpedoes Newtonian physics. From the safety features on your car to baseball, that's all Newtonian physics. It is indispensable to daily life. Try driving your car using quantum mechanics - no matter how much you observe it, it isn't going to change position. The takeaway point here is that they both exist at the same time. The brain/mind I see in the same way. How we feel, how we see the world, can be altered by nothing more than chemical imbalances. Have someone remove your prefrontal cortex and you will find your behavior will change dramatically. But isn't that what Buddhism says? That there is no 'self'? If you go deeper into that sodium ion pulsing in and out of a neuron you will however find things operating quite differently. They also both exist at the same time. Buddhism is really quite amazing in its philosophy and practice and can do so much in the effort to relieve suffering, and it should not shun the idea of what it can contribute to scientific research - especially neuroscience - just because it, at least at the present time, is focused on the bigger than quantum mechanics level of reality. That exists too, in a way very fundamental to daily life.

Ummm..when he's defining these two words "naturalism" and "scientism" he defines them or rather describes them as having been defined in such a way as to be poorly phrased and, thereby, easily refuted. I'm only 17 min in, but it's not a promising start.

He has a not-so-subtle vendetta against physical science, especially neuroscience. It's weird.

easily refute what? hes simply staying the fact that there is no agreed upon definition of consciousness and no neural correlate for mere consciousness ie. no scientific evidence for the existence of mind and yet they talk. these are not even slightly controversial.

Cannot be generalised the mind or consciousness behaviour. Sharing experiences are clues that provide ground to feel mind and consciousness and that too with uncertainty. Feelings might be those like Elephant & 4 blind men, a story. Science is external. Generalised knowledge. Learning without experience. It is like observing picture of food that cannot feed the appetite. Yet there is ample scope in such learning to get activated or provoked to convert this into experience. We call them philosopher/ scientist or .... Scietists are not a product of generalised science education, otherwise all the present world would have been full of scientists. Science does not provide the certain end result. There is always a scope of correction or redefining the past discoveries. Thats how the Noble prizes are continuing, old wine -new bottle.....

The essential nature of the mind??? The mind does not exist it is a construct /the overuse of the word "mind" speaking about spiritual matters is just showing total ignorance of the phenomenon of consciousness and the role of the crown chakra into it.

I am the kid ...in the experiment about split the brain into 3 parts and put the one. Part of the Brian in each kid ..and the kids will live in the matrix ...such a long time...fighting each other by no communicate face to face to fix the problem ..( because he thinks he know the best so, he keep on doing that activity " I am not sure that someone or the god or the devil force him to do that and never change his mind ...by use his consciousness to see the realistic in the world of Math world ... maybe he see those in the way of real tough lie a lot will be the only way to make the better world and create such a painful and life miserable from not communicating to the next person with him ....and believing that is the only way and only that option for survival in that area...so...I say..in the easy way he looks at the real thing ...but way to exaggerate....if he use his mind or his heart look at the real world ...and that situation with kindness and knowledge of laws , constitutes, criminal or not guilty if ....you. Rules and regulations of the game of thrones and ...the true color of your skin beat your love down to the down and bury the heart in one place like other kids? Can I ask ...do you like to see the kids who ...you called that ...he or she or it or whatever is the one that you are willing happily accept into your team or your slave or your people in the same side like you ...in the worst condition...( i mean his physical body and mind and can't repair ..or very hard help /heal anymore) or actually those kid ..they are just the group of your entertainment..you never give a shit ..they will die in that basement or battle field ...all of them .. and u are hoping them to die as quick as possible so, the new set will come ..no traffic for your business ... right?

Atheism reminds me of homosexuality. You'll just keep coming up with more reasons not to believe in God because you have some kind of woundedness in regards to the subject of God and our divine origins. If you ever come to an end of your life and need help, call on Jesus Christ and give your sins to him, give thanks to the Father who sent him and your entire life will be changed. To me atheism is a backlash to Catholicism honestly. it's a backlash to poorly demonstrated poorly represented religious views. God is Awesome. The relationship with God is awesome and that relationship opens up when we love Jesus and give our hearts to Jesus and to God and walk in the way of God. it is a true science. it's clearly spelled out in the Bible in the New Testament. science is only concerned about what can be observed, tested, and proved by use of the five limited human senses - and has nothing to do with developing spiritually in connection with or expression of God.
@liamnewsom85833 жыл бұрын
Really not seeing anything here to do with atheism being like homosexuality 😂 but thanks for sharing 🙏
@PeterOzanne Жыл бұрын
No. Buddhism is not "atheism". We just don't imagine truth as a supernatural being, we don't make an image of "God", for us the awesome Truth is "Reality as it is", not what the Devil (our out-of-control mind) tells us it is. If your mind is out of control, you can't give yourself to Jesus, of anything Divine. Our bad habits of thinking - always and unconsciously judging people and things as good or bad (for us!), wanting things or disliking things, are like "looking through a glass, darkly" - we don't see God, or Reality, face to face! That is why in the Bible it says "be still". Not be physically still, find mental stillness. And that The "Peace of God" is beyond the understanding of the mind (in the NT). If you have an idea of God as a "Father", that's fine, it can be helpful, for the time when we "see as a child, think as a child".
