And think that's it, that's all there is to Vipassana and then one kind of misses, oh, what, 99%? ..."
@shanerabideau59106 жыл бұрын
I found this interesting as well. It seems like there are many different traditional teachings around Vipassana and it does play into what he mentions. In order to make "some' of this practice accessible to a wider audience it needs to be less stoic/strict. I only have experience with Vipassana as taught by Goenka and Satipatthana Vipassana in Thailand based on Ven. Mahasi Sayadaw’s teaching and they both are very different the Thai teachings being more about 'here and now' and Goenka being a deep dive into wisdom through experiencing 'ultimate truth' in practice. I do not see any negative consequences around a 'watered' down Vipassana practice as it will allow more people to get a taste. I would love to hear more on this topic.
@moonmissy3 жыл бұрын
@@shanerabideau5910 Goenka's Vipassana is another waterred down version, which is also very suitable for the west. The negative consequences are that what people gained from that practice, they think that's all there is... some even delusionally thinks that it ends there and they "get" it. Whereas it's just the absolute beginning for most trainned meditators in Theravada tradition.
@saulgoodman67222 жыл бұрын

@rowansart10 жыл бұрын
Dzogchen is not about finding anything. Not about finding more peace, not about being happier, not about becoming liberated, but it is the lack of the self that seeks. The self identity that believes it will be freer somehow is recognized for it's emptiness. It is intrinsic in the natural state and so one need do nothing but experience being. But being in that experience is non dualistic so the witness is also gone. There is no self location or embodied entity if there is no self. Where is the self located? Where is the "I"? where do the thoughts arise from? Who witnesses the thought? Hey what do I know?
@62sugarbear10 жыл бұрын
Dzogchen sez, If you like yourself , you can keep yourself
@rowansart10 жыл бұрын
There is a practice of equanimity in Dzogchen which is about not assigning like or dislike to any experience. When we like or dislike self we are giving attention to the self creating that duality. When we realize that self (what we like or dislike) and all that comes with it is empty by nature - there is nothing to keep. Eh what do I know...
@waterkingdavid8 жыл бұрын
Well that sounds where we want to be but how to get there is the question. For me its the sense of "other" or other people we have to come to terms with or deal with . Many seem to think they have reached the place that you mention above only to realize that it was just certain supportive circumstances within experience that led them to think this. So in principle and theory I agree with you - but I would be highly skeptical of anyone claiming to directly know what you mention above. All good things!
@rowansart8 жыл бұрын
David Watermeyer Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi talks about it in his theory of "Flow"...This is not some strange phenomenon that is other than what we have known in daily experience. When an athlete or an artist loses oneself completely and a sense of no time takes place, one enters into "flow"....No pain, no suffering of the life situation, no worries, and a sense of deep abiding peace is explained by many. When one sees the empty nature of the object/subject world it becomes quite evident that we live in a reality that we have generated completely from our mind and it's belief. Physicists agree we live in a holographic universe...Dzogchen is not a state that we must find. It's not a condition that we come to know by some awakening suddenly necessarily. It is by the direct path that we see nature as it is. Everything that the mind generates leaves the cycle going and our true nature still does nothing. Yes the trick is if you are a flashlight in an empty dark room, how then can you shine your light back on your own source of light? It is sort of like the light does nothing and rests as it is knowing it is the source. Rest there. These experiences or moments of pure insight do not take away our capacity to be in and of the world..They only expand it...Truly it is a matter of content...We are it already...It's just that shift of attention that happens...Quite subtly.

@squamish424410 жыл бұрын
If I have one major criticism of Alan Wallace it's that he is too much of a traditionalist in his attachment to the path. He supports brain research but to my knowledge always talks around the obvious fact that emerging technologies are almost certainly going to transform the skillful means of the dharma, and not decades from now but in ways that are already becoming available. To someone like me who faces serious obstacles to progress (and indeed to anyone who's ever struggled with attaining mental quiet and can't go on retreat), this is rather irritating coming from one of the foremost communicators of Tibetan Buddhism to the modern world.
@bob625410 жыл бұрын
I agree to some extent. Wouldn´t say that Alan is dogmatic, but his views are of course strongly shaped by the way his spiritual journey unfolded in the past. Although I really appreciate his work and style of teaching, there are points that don´t correlate with my own experience. Without watering down the Dharma, there are many things possible even without teacher, lineage, introductions, retreats or what ever. Those are helpful and do exist for good reason, but still it´s individual and nothing´s cemented. With his decades of monastic training he appears sometimes a bit intimidating. Therefore I would recomment to take what he says with a grain of salt, but still to listen carefully. There is one or an other important thing that one can learn from a person like him. Not sure about new emerging technologies that are already available and in what way they could improve the dharmic skillful means though.
@bob625410 жыл бұрын
valinor100 That´s very interesting. Yes, it´s kind of too easy to simplify such things. People are different, downplaying something from which many people would benefit is not a good idea. "In fact I would say it is the biggest barrier to starting a practice" couldn´t agree more. Even if you have the experience, even when you don´t need someone to tell you how good it is for you because you simply know it, it still costs a rediculous amount of energy and overcoming to keep the practice alife. It´s proberly our lifestyle in addition with all the fears and problems that everybody has to face in this modern times. Some electromagnetic impulses could really be a good startpoint to settle down the mind a bit. Most people can´t even imagine how much relaxation is possible and how needed it is.

62sugarbear Thank you for your comment, and I apreciate the effort. I have done my research, and what I was higihlighting in my original comment was the actual lack of thecniques. I have studied, read and talked with many budhist, and practitioners of others doctrine, but many fails to lay out the actual practice. I understand that in Dzogchen there is a strong sense of the initial realization, and so fort for any other teaching there is, but all I see is people trying to explain something, then giving as techniques the only "look at one point" intensively, and the "realx your mind progressively" when you mastered the one point focus exercise. I see no tecnique in this, no structure, and any doctrine must have instruction to follow. Some concepts can be hard to grasp, but that is not an excuse for not sharing knowledge. All I got as answer is the same old "we are translating the text from tibetan etc etc." ... really? who would have wondered... That is the lack of information I was commenting on. In the Era of science and technology, we cannot really believe that the "go find a guru and follow his teachings" can be a realistic expectation. I loathe more the fact that the knoledge is share in exchange of money (that violates the original buddhist predicament itself.). No one would buy a complex ikea product without instructions, and many of us know that even that sometimes can be frustrating... nonetheless, the presence of instructions is better than nothing. And when I get fluffy talk, I recognize it without effort, because I work in the marketing arena, so I can see through it pretty quickly. The same tecnique I found for Dzogchen are the same I found while studying Taoism a little more in depth. As Eastern practice, they are really difficult to come in contact and understand them fully, I concede that, but I do not go around expecting that people are stupid, so I cannot understand why it is that difficult to find the information alone. Are they dangerous? Good. I will die happily if I am not prepared, but I cannot accept any excuse. The worst of all, as already written, is the "it is dangerous" objection, which to me is the clear bullshit... like the "i like you more as a friend" line girls say to people who do not care for, but can exploit.

Cerverus Actually, I didn't know that I was involved in Buddhism when I started this trip. I simply noticed the lights on, nobody home state of mind and decided to find out where the hell everybody went. It was just something I was curious about. The reverse knock knock joke came from a movie called, "American Werewolf in London". I pulled it on people to put them in that state so I could observe where they went but I couldn't get there myself because I knew the punchline. Some years later, I was in a bookstore and picked up a book called www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss/180-9317683-5977417?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=The+cycle+of+the+day+and+night+Namkai+norbu. The first line I read was," a mirror shines brightest when it's not reflecting anything". That sentence cut me loose. I was in that funky place but this time I was conscious of it. I was looking at everything as a reflection. I left the shop and walked through my town. I experienced distractions but I was able to return to the state at will. This will be invaluable to me on the death trip.

62sugarbear In hypnosis, that is called interrupting the thought process or breaking the state. It is described as the stopping thoughts, which is another technique, tought in many meditation traditions. It is maybe now more known as the stopping thought tecqnique or Zen Buddhism, where you silence your mind. That occurred to me naturally, as some people seems to get a more rational view of their thought process while the majority or the mass is always at the commands of emotions and irrational thoughts. This is viewed from some as the beginning stepping stone on the path to enlightenment, whilst there are some buddhist traditions that do not advocate the necessity of such state of mind. I spent quite some time in reading books about the theory, and I got some experience myself or results, as the stop of thoughts which is a natural characteristic to me now.... but that alone did not lead to anything by itself. Moreover, thoughts continue even after you get able to stop the process, but I never felt a true dissociation from my body... and to experience the dream yoga results (aka lucid dreaming) I have invested quite an effort. It seems to me that in the myst of the so called "mystery" there is only a lack of true knowledge, as it appears to me so wrong the "oh it is different for anybody" approach. Because that itself is such a common excuse which is not different in any way from the excuses of people who really do not care. I wish you all the luck, and I hope your journey can become better and better. :)

While I don't appreciate your approach in seeking it… Here is something….Check out the book "The Natural Bliss of Being" By Jackson Peterson. He isn't my favorite teacher but he sure knows the techniques through and through. These buddhist teachers are trying to survive so just pay the money out. By doing so you support them. Alan Wallace is not a Buddhist Monk. Anyone offering these highest teachings is usually doing so due to Karma and due to permissions from their teachers. What you think is irrelevant to what is happening. That's Dzogchen.
@rowansart10 жыл бұрын
The trouble with Dzogchen is there is no trouble with Dzogchen, and there is no teaching ultimately because it is impossible to comprehend that state with the mind. You can practice all your life and never come any closer to it. Talk about it for decades and miss it. We are all already there and are just in perpetual and habitual displacement of what is. It's there and all that you need do is experience it. Some say Tibetan Yoga is necessary and some say Thogul Dzogchen method is best and others say there is Immediate approach and Gradual approach. Some say there is no practitioner or entity to do the practice. So good luck finding the "technique" There is no technique to realizing the truth of the primordial self. It just happens and it just is. There are pointings to it….Check out Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche who is a Bon Teacher. He offers some simple quieting techniques. Ultimately the best thing is to get the transmissions and just keep getting them. They will help one to recognize the truth. I've heard it said no transmissions are necessary either. One can realize in one instant…Good luck

What will happen to a monk who spent 20 years on the path but doesn't make any subjective progress looks back on his wasted years. Will the monk pretend to be making progress? The theory of cognitive dissonance says this is the human dilemma. Maybe monks, priests and other holy people are probably faking it because they can't go back, and so they persuaded themselves that it wasn't a wast of time. You never know.

S his workshops/seminars/retreats on the meridian trust. Begin with The Meaning of the Path of Dharma so that you don't go in circles. If you follow the accurate teaching, not this new age watered down collection, you'll find that there's such a thing as an authentic path; an evolutionary process that's irreversible. You can never fall back into delusion. I know professors who've studied 50 years and still not gotten it...

This sadly shows me that you haven't even laid the foundation of ethics for if you had, you would have felt that first gust of eudaimonia. You would have tasted the fruit of the cultivating your inner resources of well-being which means you're still looking for things outwardly and you've invested so much time in your reputation, your wealth and your influence/control that you fear you've wasted your life and now you won't admit that all the money, power and prestige in the world has never ever gotten you anything more than fleeting moments of mundane pleasure. And no irreversible and meaningful evolution of self had come from it. Nor has the pleasure lasted. Time to go inward and become a Nangpa (an insider).

Step 1: Be a Human Being.
@michaelepstein25703 жыл бұрын
A Human Being is one who is actually Totally Free of fear, anxiety, sorrow, guilt, confusion, and loneliness. A Human Being is one who is actually Totally Free of vanity, envy, greed, jealousy, possessiveness, attachment, hatred, violence, bias, and prejudice. A Human Being is one who actually treats everyone, without exception, with the same intensity and quality of care and affection that they would give their dearest closest friend, lover, or child, without any sense of division or separation. A Human Being is actually Living Love, Peace, Joy, Creativity, Authenticity, Compassion (Passion for All) in each and every moment of daily life. A Human Being is actually Communicating, Communing, Connecting with everyone and everything in each and every moment of daily life. Total Freedom from the I, the me, the self, the so-called True or Higher Self, is the beginning of being a Human Being in daily life.

To be Human does not take time. It is not of time. It is not the result of time or the things of time. It is not the result of any process. It is not the result of any method, ritual, or diet. It is not the result of any chemical. There is no path to it. It happens effortlessly and choicelessly...faster than the speed of light. Moreover, it is once and for all, now and forever.
@michaelepstein25703 жыл бұрын
Without being a Human Being, there is no Love, Peace, Joy, Creativity, and Lucidity. Without Love, Peace, Joy, Creativity, and Lucidity, there is no Community, Communion, Connection, or Relationship. There is only what thought imagines them to be, which is a limitation and imitation. Therefore, your every action is feeding the conflict, violence, and suffering in the world today. You will merely substitute one form of tyranny for another form of tyranny. Inner slavery can never ever bring about a Wonderful World rooted in Love and Wisdom.

no no no.... ...a path is reversible, and so is the 4th noble truth. ...think about it, assuming that time is infinite, e.g. infinite amount of past time, if the path of the 4th truth was irriversible and if there was any rate of progress for every being, then all would be enlightened ))). So of course, we can make progress and with regards to past bad deeds, we pay for that with reverse path movement )))). That is the system of Karma....
