Retirement is the biggest killer of our elderly. Let the notable gentleman stay active, continue with his meaningful contribution to our academia to the last breath if he can. Such humble and yet distinguished academic with amazing accomplishments rarely spend a lifetime within our borders to share knowledge. Thank you Prof Christopher J. Chetsanga for your selfless service to the country. Thank you Trevor for this wonderful interview.

Hello Jage. Ndeipi wangu. Asi imbondivudza your view Rammed Earth approach was it really cost-effective or dzavapolotics dzataingonzi titaure paya? Ndakambo leader BTI team attending Trade Fair so I was the one doing most of the talking @ our exhibition stall (I think you had already left). Ndakatambura kupindura nyaya yecost n the source of the soil. some knowledgeable people mostly civil engineers really grilled us. They were were talking of thickness of the wall which meat lost of soil, the cost of transportation of that soil from wherever you source, costs of rehabilitating huge damage to environment resulting from extraction large amounts of soil etc. I never believed the approach was as lucrative as we were trying to package it anyway. However, I just heard the Prof citing it as low-cost technology that was developed kkkkkk

@@innocenthapazari8699 Manyanyo dzikisa gejo. Yes, in the short term, the rammed earth building technology is expensive. One factor that contributes to the high-cost levels is the fact that it is highly labour-intensive, which brings the average cost to about USD500 per square meter compared to USD 30 for brick-and-mortar structures. However, in Africa, the labor cost factor(and other factors) can easily be circumvented by the formation of rural and communal housing cooperatives, whose members would offer that costly component for free and earn a house each, almost for free. This technology was meant for rural settings (and growth points) and not for urban dwellings. Imagine how much the Great Wall of China would have costed, had it been built on a commercial basis, or imagine how much it would have cost China to build a wall, had the Chinese opted for a Donald Trump type of wall. In the long term, this building technology is far much cheaper than most conventional ones. Remember, the Great Wall of China which is over 2000 years is made out of rammed earth, a clear testimony that this type of construction far outweighs the durability of brick-and-mortar structures/ The maintenance costs are very low if not zero, and remember, rammed earth structures stabilise house temperatures, making the technology more energy efficient compared to brick/ concrete structures Labour costs and scarcity of suitable materials make the technology very expensive in Borrowdale but not in Murambinda. It is one of the few things that is very cheap for the rural poor and very expensive for the rich in town.

Legendary. Prof Chetsanga and several other academics came back after Independence with passion and zeal to impart their knowledge but It is so sad that they only got a cup of tea and a lot of frustrations. Enjoyed his lectures at UZ and he was generous when marking as well.

It's not for lack of knowledge rather the lack of a political will that we aren't able to industrialise. Prof Chetsanga is telling us here. These minds are needed. Prof Chetsanga among others must be working in some form, making ideas and directing us to drive our country forward. We need a change of mindset as a country. President Mnangagwa listen. Here is the easy way to change our country. Change of direction is needed. Research is key.

insightful conversation. Prof touches on significant areas we're lacking on. Zim sends students outside of the country to study on a number of presidential scholarships, however, the issue has always been, like Trevor said, the lack of an enabling environment to equip these students to do what they know best. Most of these students do not even want to return home because home is not home enough for them to explore and develop. we lack the political will to make things happen. Politics is standing in the way of development.

I think that it's high time we change things.... We can continue to acknowledge that scientific research is important for the development of any society on Earth without giving due recognition to the great minds behind the research. The black man continues to lag behind in our tale of human evolution because he has not yet grasped yet the concept of celebrating black excellence the likes of Prof Chetsanga etc. As young people we need role models that are world renowned in their areas of research. As a country let us make at least a movie showcasing the lives of great minds like Prof Chetsanga as a way of decolonizing our black African minds that have been programed to come to believe that we can not make discoveries on behalf of our human species. It is this colonialism of our minds that make our African leaders to fail to fund scientific research on the African continent and sadly Only acknowledge on paper and in the public that scientific research is IMPORTANT. People like Prof Chetsanga must have awards that are given in their names to the best Black minds in the world in honor of their work. I understand that we have the Nobel Prize but as Blacks why not establish our own Prize to honor great black minds globally. Our Politician need to change and truly believe and start to honor our great minds the likes of Prof Chetsanga etc. I have had to look up to Issac Newton and Albert Einstein for inspiration but sometimes these figures great as they are, sometimes they just are not encouraging enough, I mean we don't connect that much with those guys coz they are not African and worse still Black. People like Prof Chetsanga can be a more organic source of inspiration because they are black and are African. It becomes so easy to convince oneself that I can also do great things if you have someone who is like you who is celebrated by our African leaders and our African society. We have to change or else we will continue to follow behind the white man as if we are his zombies. Let's Celebrate Black Excellence Please. Bring more Black African Scientist or scholars the likes of Prof Mutambara etc. We want to hear their life stories. We are so sick of reading Relativity by Einstein and Principia by Newton, we need to read and connect with the great work of our great African minds.

Great conversation as usual Trevor. This one has a sad ending though. What is the prof still doing in office. How do you censure your father, your grandfather or you elders in general in an African set up. The Vice Chancellor is 87, the Chancellor is 99(Church folk please note i am not attacking the dear leader). Are we not perpetuating Mugabeism whilst trying to move forward as a nation? Holding on to a baton beyond your leg in a relay

Mr Trevor; failure to attract gifted diasporans is not only political fear. But I think more importantly is lack of will to invest in those environments that such people could come & function fully. Otherwise they may just come & sit in large offices running some white elephants with ZERO resources to do what they know best. Most will just get frustrated & go back - that is if they even take offers in the first place (as the good Prof did). Prof rightly highlighted lack of investment in critical areas by Gvt.

Trevor, you already have students that have studied abroad, one outstanding example is Professor Arthur Mutambara. Where is he now? Who wants to be in a country that is led by EDiots who resort to violence when challenged or when someone dares to point at their mistakes. Zimbabwe is loosing the best of its talented individuals to other countries because the current leaders do not even bother to invest their loot in developing the country.
