I recall an immature relativist Welsh student at Bangor ( a member of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg), back in the Seventies, calling Bangor's late Professor of German, Keith Spalding, a "fascist" during a student debate to justify the disruption to our studies, by the Welsh Language Society, at that time. What the young Welshman did not know was that Keith Spalding had been 'Kurt Spaldt', and had had his books burned by Adolph Hitler and his cronies. Such is the stuff, and irony, of immaturity. It does not know when to keep quiet!

+Mark Dyer It´s just shocking for me. I am from eastern Europe and we would never even dare to say something like that to a profesor or anyone at the colleague soil. The freedom of speech is one thing, but total disrespect and lack of self-awareness is just shocking. Emeritus Professor Spalding was one of the sweetest gentlest scholars at the University College of North Wales (Coleg Prifysgol Gogledd Cymru), Bangor; and to hear him so-treated, by an ignorant young Welsh fascist, was very hard. You can see just how stacked the audience was when the camera pans around. The majority of these people were checking their phones, chatting, snickering, or staring with a "deer caught in the headlights" look. Rhodes certainly wasn't a Hitler but as was said his views were similar to Churchill's who certainly thought quite erroneously that his class was born to rule and own a disproportionate amount of any country's wealth. Churchill was a racist, he thought India would be the jewel in the Empire during his life time. In that respect he was similar to Hitler as both thought their countries and peoples were superior to others. Surely Rhodes was a not untypical ruthless Capitalist who had no thought of sharing his enormous wealth with Africans and the country in which he mined his wealth.

For a student living in Oxford, I would like to go to one of these rallies and just tell them to stop being so PC and accept the fact that you can't erase history. Oxford has been around for centuries and you want to take down one of it's values now? A minority of megaphones just need to learn to fit in, rather than trying to make everything else fit to them. This censorship of history to fit a minority is just an excuse to destroy another former culture, rather to let it co-exist with other cultures we're lucky to even let in. It's still racism to take something from a white originated element of a culture. You take a bit of our culture, you take away something you'll probably benefit from.
