Her conclusions are based on four arguments, 1. Persian Sources: The chroniclers differed on the description of idol 2. Sanskrit sources: After 200-300 years of destroying the temple, the priests gave land to Arabs and traded with them 3. Jaina Sources: Kumarapala (whose rule started about almost 120 years after the destruction of the temple) repaired it and reasons cited were different than the attack of Ghazani 4. British parliamentary debate: Some gates were brought back from Ghazni and they didn’t match Indian style In my opinion, all her conclusions are nothing but forcefully used to support her hypothesis. 1. Just because the descriptions of idol differ can you deny the destruction itself. What about the glorious accounts of Mahmud’s ‘scholars’ about the destruction of Somnath temple? What about Al-Beruni’s account of Somnath’s destruction? (He is considered the First and leading Muslim Indologist) 2. Trade with the West and India is as old as the history itself. How does one nullify the destruction of the temple just because some Muslim traders were given some land or trade deals? (That too after 200 years). Did Muslims stop dealing with Hindus after demolition of Babri? 3. An assumption has been made that no effort was made to repair and reconstruct the temple between 1026 (the destruction) and 1143 (When Kumarpala’s reign began). It is possible Kumarpala’s reasons are correct but how do they defy the destruction is beyond understanding. 4. The gates not matching, again depends on preserving the WOODEN gates for over 800 years by people in Ghazni, bringing the right gates etc. Britishers always viewed India with their lenses. Their bias toward anything oriental is an open fact. A significant part of historical research is about interpreting sources. But this one-sided approach of ignoring the obvious facts and selective and bias interpretation is a tragedy in itself. Most Indians support communal harmony but that does not mean that you create false narratives to hide the truth. The invaders destroyed our temples including Somnath, That's the hard truth.

First of all that's not a conclusion that's a written reference of what the Brahmanical sources wrote. Obviously trade has been going on since Harappa with Mesopotamia and Egyptians then with Greeks in Mauryan times. 3. The trend of sources has to be assumed she is not denying that the temple has been broken, whether for natural factors or broken by an invader. She is assessing the Sanskrit sources which does not makes any assessment of breaking temples. 4. Your argument that Britishers did not understand about orient and that's why the gate is not real is feeble at best. Its assumption of many things. They did dig out most of the Mauryan sites, and introduced statisgraphical explorations. That's true they did it to rule the masses but does not prove their non verifiability of architecture. All history that we know was started by the British themselves. And it has to be case specific and art historian has to be consulted and arguments have to be analyzed or else that will be just more likely which is still far part from the truth.

The sad part is that Romila Thapar skirts some obvious facts. It is true that the Ummayad Caliphate, in Syria, was bent upon conquest in the name of religion - Jihad was an espoused state policy and conversion, and slave taking is not denied even by Arab sources. The Arabs arrived on the scene in the 11th Century CE and she is talking about an imaginary image of an Arab goddess, called 'Mannat' that was preserved till the 11th Century CE at Somanth and goes on to say that the temple was destroyed by neglect and 'sea spray'. This is a perversion of the grossest kind. Extreme elements of Islam, have a track record of destruction in Al-Hind ( India ) starting with Delhi and probably continuing right to the time of Aurangzeb and his death in 1707 CE. The Arab invasion of India was cited as a Jihad and there is no hiding from that fact!

Prof Romila,Irfan Habib, Kosambi and few more were patronized by the then Congress govt to write history in a manner which depicts Muslim rulers are most refined, peace loving and great administrators. We were taught Akbar the great as most secular and ruled with harmony. Shahjahan was a great builder. Before his reign there was no architecture in India. Aurangzeb was a pious ruler. Somnath , Mathura, Kasi, Hoya sala, kakatiyan temples were destroyed by Hindu rulers only. So we are unnecessarily blaming peace loving, sophisticated and cultures Muslim rulers of Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan,Turkey and Afghanistan. For writing history we should not depend on local sources . Persian chronicles are authentic. Next time when Rahul Gandhi becomes PM , he should give Bharata ratna to these congress sponsored historians

Sad state of affairs that history cannot be discussed neutral from "what present form of India should be".I am a secular person and think India should be secular. I also want the history of Somnath temple be discussed even debated without being disagreeable. Tragedy of the situation (very clear from the comments below as well) is that one side purely wants a Hindu-India , Non-secular-India and want to use history (assuming their version of Somnath temple destruction is correct) and the other side feeling threatened by it (justifiably threatened) is probably in some cases ( not particularly talking about Romilaji) is over emphasizing some facts and undermining some other facts. I wish we could take secularism, rights of present day Muslims in India for granted, cast in stone and then have an open conversation about past , even may be about atrocities committed by Muslim invaders which does not justify why Muslims should have any less right in 2018 India.
