Almost all Steel construction in 37. There were two blocks of wood in the cab of my 37 PU. They were at the front corner of the cab where it bolted to the frame with a 1/4" pad between the cab and frame. That's all been eliminated and replaced with steel. The cab now bolts to the frame with 1/4" polyurethane pads. The frame is boxed and has frame stiffeners.

Hey Kyle you'd be proud of me. I used a slapper, dolly and a shrinking wheel today to get some dents out of the roof on my 32. I spent the whole time thinking how much better a job you'd have made of it, but was pleased how it came out. Nice job on the door, by the way. That mung didn't know what hit it. All the best, Mart.

I really enjoy watching you do Body work. I did this for so many years and to watch someone actually repair a panel rather than replacing it is a pleasure. In many countries the name for a body repairman is "panel beater". You and I both fit that descriptive term very well. The slapping spoon you use (that's what I call it) is an unheard-of tool to many technicians today and they wouldn't know how to use it if they tried. Its refreshing to see one used properly. Thanks

Again Kyle, thanks for showing me the practical lesson in dent reading and panel bumping. I am so glad that there are auto body panel beaters who know, practice, preserve and use this art today. Modern, high tensile and ultra thin panels don't repair that well or some don't even like to be welded. Thank you for showing this old bloke the way it should be done.

Videos like this are some of my favorites. That door was seriously wrecked and it came out amazing. You're a proper artisan. The woodwork in those older cars is amazing, it's very intricate. Look how many pieces, some very small, went into that door alone. I think you had mentioned converting this one into a coupe? Can't wait to see this! I also appreciated the cat segments.

Thank you for sharing. I really enjoy the real time dent repairs, I always learn something new. I would really like to see a Metal structure replacement video as I plan to do this to my 36 Chevy Coupe. PS: I made a comment on your last live stream about the City coming after you for Bylaw Violations.....Well JUST I got Notice of Violation under "Neighborhood Livability Bylaw " I can only have two vehicles in the driveway in from of a Double Garage. So, I plated all the cars and moved them to the street. My Property is clean, I just installed a new roof, facia and was painting the house when the bylaw officer showed up. Moral of the story. I will not make comments like that ever again on your live stream..... PPS I am in the next Provence over.

It took me a lot of time and thought to figure out how to build A and B pilllars for my 28 Coach and then all the structure required to hold them up! These cars are not for the faint of heart. I have some regrets for picking it as my first build but I'm fortunate to have a driver as well. Thanks for sharing. The shrinking tips are well timed. I created a bit of a mess on one of my window surrounds by putting too much heat in it. I need to try some different ways to shrink up a small area mid panel.

I am impressed with your cat wrangling Kyle. You just say "action", and they perform. Nice job on the door repair. Someone in a small town close to me has a 38 Chevrolet for sale, but I suspect it's really a 35, he doesn't have a title for it. It has 1 handle in the back of the trunk to open it. I would be tempted to buy it to follow along with your repairs, but it's in rougher shape than the 35 that you purchased. It has a stuck engine, so that's the same. No grill, or radiator, 1 front fender with a tear in it. The only glass on it is one half of the windshield, no wheels. It's a peach.

When I worked at earl sheib for a week, The body man would have used a punch and punched a couple holes in the dent. Then proceed to use a slide hammer with a sheet metal screw in the end of it. Insert the sheet metal screw to the punched hole. Then start sliding the slide hammer back until the sheet metal screw pulled out......3 or 4 times and he was DONE.....Without grinding to bare metal he would mix up the filler and spread it right over the paint, rust, whatever he was fixing then barely sand that until it was Perfectly Rippley. Then send it off to me for paint......It would turn out like absolute dog crap and the Customer that wrecked his car on the way home from the bar last night would PAY.....And be PERFECTLY HAPPY.....Go figure!!!

Amazing how they actually added wood in the cars. Would this possibly be something to do with what the company was before ? Maybe connected to boat building or possible carriage's / horse + carts so they would have many very talented wood workers in the company already. This would have been easy for them to create the wooden frames . One must go do a little research on my days off .

Being that the '30's was the Great Depression era, all of the structural wood nightmare in the GM bodies was possibly a UAW/GM busy work idea to keep their members out of the soup lines. Likely saved a total of 10 cents per car too, making the bean counters happy.

I think you will be a carpenter when you are done good luck.
@briquetaverne
@briquetaverne 5 сағат бұрын
Kyle; You've pointed out clearly that the frames for the pre-1937 Chevys are a pain to work on because you have to be a carpenter more than a body man. (BTW the reason Automakers like GM that used wood were able to sell Chevys cheaply before 1937 switched to all steel was because labor was cheap. People in all sorts of trades had wood working skills still, the Great Depression was going on, people who grumbled about low pay were fired and easily replaced, and Unions hadn't quite gotten their foot in the door). Are you up for a little experimentation? I was never one to fix dents or repair bodies on cars but it was another matter for boats. Having lived on the ocean, I had a ton of boats as did so many of my neighbors. I grew up in a time when boats were made of wood and Fiberglas was just starting to make its appearance in the boat building field. One of the little tricks I learned was to buy styrofoam blocks or sheets. In themselves they were a lot lighter than wood but brittle. You could very easily cut out shapes in only a few seconds whereas if it were wood it wood take 10 times longer. Now if you took fibreglas mesh and placed it on the syrofoam (you've just cut out to some form you're replicating), laid it down flat then applied in little swatches of no more than 2 to 3" inch squares of brush dabbled fibreglas resin flat onto it, so the fiber swatches lay flat and clung to the styrofoam, it will dry harder than a rock and is about as strong as wood. Be sure not to make more than two layers or the form you're mimicking will be too thick (like painting something that closes like a door with too many layers. You should be able to replace a lot of the wooden forms a lot faster this way without having to do woodwork(?). BTW if you made braces from these strofoam pieces, you could also screw wood screws into it which will hold well. I appreciate the kind references on me that you report but it isn't for that, that I support you. I love your work and I want to see that Chevy Truck up and running for you. I will send you a little something more soon, keep your eyes out for that French stamped envelope ha, ha ha. *Laurent
