I really liked your points on Jongho's dancing, actually... Having it critiqued by a real dancer and not some teenager on Twitter who insists that he's just plain "bad at dancing" was something I'd hoped to see someday and you didn't disappoint. Like you said, his movements aren't always as sharp or fluid as the rest when he's dancing off to the side or in the back, but when he has his solo moments and he's in the center, I think he shows his talent and capabilities really well. If he didn't have to focus so much of his performance into singing, no one would even think twice about his dancing, as shown in various ATEEZ performances where he doesn't have to sing and can solely focus on his movements (like dance covers). I'm really glad you talked about it briefly here because usually people either A) never talk about it or B) only talk about it to drag him, which isn't quite fair in my opinion.

yeah, and he and the rest of atz have talked about this too! he does just enough with the dancing so that he blends with the group, but is mostly preserving energy to be able to sing live throughout the whole performance and maintain highnotes at the end. exactly like you said, when they're doing a performance where he's not singing he's a really great dancer. esp check performance video II!

Yess 9:49 Actually ateez themselves has said how they don't focus so much on synchronization as usually kpop groups do, because you know it has to be clean, and also they have to givr stable vocals, they can be syncronized, as shown in their KQ fellaz performances videos. But they said they focus on highlighting each member style, on individuality rather than pure synchronization. And you can see that. Lastly as you said, their ENERGY, its always on point. Their performances are actually ateez's strength point, they are good on everything, but they shine SO much on stage

I think jongho tends to maybe not over work his upper body at the end as he has his high notes and will ALWAYS sing live up until the last second, so I think he prioritizes his singing over the dancing aspect as he is the main vocal

I think one of their strengths as a group is that they can all make each other (and themselves) stand out while still maintaining cohesiveness as a group. ex; They tone down their execution, especially on the lower body, at the very start of the first verse while Yunho's sharp and powerful. Like you mentioned, in Mingi and Hongjoong's rap verses, they're either controlled by the current rapper or doing their own things in the back. It really shows their teamwork, and while they're already quite synchronized in the first place, prioritizing the distinction of each others' styles over perfect uniformity is one of the more unique approaches in kpop right now. Also, facial expressions (not stage presence) are an essential in every single one of their performances, which is something I really respect. It seems to come quite naturally to them. The thing with most of their concepts is that their expressions have to be fierce; it's one thing to keep a smile on for performances like Wave or Illusion, and it's another thing to act as angry and intense as they do (prime example; the 'i'm the one' chorus) without looking cringeworthy or overly rehearsed, which is usually much more unnatural to most people. Hongjoong ESPECIALLY stood out here. He's not the best dancer in the group, but the attitude (and almost immaturity?) of this concept really made him shine. Concepts like these are *made* for him. Overall, Thanxx performances were strong as hell. That one video of San in the purple pants has to be one of, if not the most expressive facecam I think I've ever seen from anyone. All-time favourite performer. ** As for the mic comment at 20:00, I think the artists choose that. Mics are chosen for both stylistic and practical purposes. Rappers often go handheld since it looks cool and they can easily pull away for breath. Ofc dancers lean towards headworn, and singers usually switch out, but I've heard many prefer handheld because, like rappers, it gives them more control over sound.

the members normally individually choose whether they use a headset or handheld mic! if they're focusing more on the choreo and dancing then they'll use headsets and if they're focusing more on the rap/singing they'll use a handheld. hongjoong, mingi, and jongho use handhelds the most often, hj and mg for rapping and jh for singing!

jongho's position as main vocal makes his live vocals a priority for him - especially in a song like this where the movements are big and explosive and require a lot of energy, jongho needs that energy instead to belt out the high notes! it's already hard to dance to this choreo at full capacity and range of motion so he's doing an amazing job at blending in and dancing clean (in comparison to a member like san who in that particular live performance you reacted to is dancing his hardest but he doesn't have enough energy to sing live). each member has their own strengths, but when they come together to perform their energy is unmatched!!
@erikadayana
@erikadayana 3 жыл бұрын
Mingi once explained that even when he likes to rap with the mic more, sometimes he decides to use the headset because of how demanding the choreography is. The one you say needs to relax his shoulders is Jongho he's the main vocalist. He explained once that he doesn't dance as energetically and explosively as the others, because he needs to hold his breath and control his breathing more because he has to hit very high notes and he always sings live no matter how much choreography he have to do. There are some videos from predebut where they don't sing and it is clear that he can also be cleaner with the movements. He is aware that when it comes to dancing he doesn't have the opportunity to show more because his strength is in his voice.

i really enjoy watching these types of videos where professionals are pointing out things. as a fan who is not trained in vocals or dance, i just enjoy their performance, but it's always nice to know HOW or WHY or WHAT makes them good. 20:11 they usually choose what type of mic to use! i believe mingi (purple button down, rapper) said that he chose to use a headset for this performance to better express the choreo. 20:43 i agree with the stage and lights sometimes being too much, especially on music shows or their kingdom performances. i just want to watch them dance, but then the lights are too dark or they're flashing too much and i can't see anything... a lot of the comments mention about jongho's dancing. the other members have said that jongho is really good at dances like krumping that requires a lot of strength (idk if that's the correct way to put it). i recommend this video of their dance covers from their second anniversary concert: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqrCXpSPnaeMaaM thanks for sharing your thoughts! going to check out your other videos~

i think that having different styles and not trying to make everything so uniform is so satisfying 'cause it all still looks cohesive because of their energy... i think they move according to their role or depending who's going to sing next... jongho's actually a really good dancer based on their kq fellaz performance videos...it's just that he's in charge of most high notes that he has to save his energy... but saving his energy doesn't compromise the group's chemistry at all.. they try to work smart given that most of their choreographies are exhausting and they sing live onstage... they look like a pack of wolves to me... different personalities but moves as one

I think the mic decision is either if the label has enough headsets for all members or how comfortable it is to the performance, for example, Mamamoo has always used handheld mics because they don't like the headsets, but when the performance requires a lot more of dance they have used headsets. Some groups give the handhelds to rappers or the ones that don't sing to much or can do their part without joining the dance just to avoid using so many headsets

True. The close-ups are fun and great for the cameras and for the fans. I'm not sure if I mentioned this in the video, but from my perspective as a dancer the shot is a better view for me because I can see the dancing in its entirety and I can still see the faces. This is essentially how I was judged when I was competing. Judges would be at a distance almost like a sky cam so they can see the dance, formations, and also the facials as a whole group. like true performers, ateez's energy and charisma are fueled by a live audience. unfortunately they didn't have any for their performance in the 3rd part. they love performing in front of fans, and I'll always be a little bitter lol bc we could've gotten *even* better stages for thanxx if an audience was allowed. also, personal opinion on jongho's stiff shoulder movements: the label might be telling him to not overexert himself. he's the main vocalist, and gets a large portion of the lines, meaning he has to sing live more than the others while not tiring himself out. maybe that habit of his creeps into dance practices too? idk. all i know is that we can't see his full potential unless he's doing it in front of a crowd. rlly liked hearing your perspective on thanxx ! i would like to see more ateez in the future.

about the mic thing for the rappers i think they decide based on how heavy the choreo is for the particular song. i think both of them prefer to use the hand held mic but since mingi's a dancer there are songs where the choreo is more intense during his part so he uses the headset to prevent dropping the mic. i dont think ive ever seen hongjoong use a headset but he probably has. i think something else that might factor into it might be breathing since they dont want to cause excess noise. jongho probably defaults to a hand held mic as well bc he hits a lot of high notes and it might help with volume when he's belting.

This is a guess but I was thinking Mingi used a headset during THANXX bcuz he has those major solo moments, with intense choreo. Otherwise Mingi always used a mic. Idk🤷‍♀️

That's because I think Jongho has his main focus on his vocal than his dance..good video :)

i assume that hongjoong (rapper) chooses to use a handheld mic because he likes to do little tricks with them haha

I think the stiffness you're speaking of in his shoulders at 23:00 may have been caused by the backpack they had him wearing 😳🤔? If I had tried to dance with that thing on it would have definitely hindered my movements...just saying!! Loved your comments throughout!

such detailed description, I loved it. I've always felt Jongho didn't "move" his upper part as the rest, of course, I'm not a dancer and it's just a personal opinion but it made sense in the way you explained it. I also agree with that some say about him having the highest notes, I think he's said it as well... to belt like he does he needs to save energy and work on his posture and stuff... thanxx for your review

jongho definitely has upper body tension which is probably from a weird singing habit,, and its especially visible before and after he has to sing live. it almost feels like his body is isolated in a stiff way
