Are you guys ready to get deep into the nitty gritty of operatic technique? I sure hope so! I may come across as overly detailed in my commentary during some parts of this video, but this is merely to point out the minor differences between a singer like Dimash, who has mastered many styles of singing, and a singer who has dedicated all their training to opera. Also to point out the difference in expectations between an operatic tenor in their prime, and Placido, one of the greatest operatic tenors in history who has simply passed his prime as a singer. In this video, I hold Placido and Dimash to a high standard because they’re performing traditional operatic repertoire, but I continually acknowledge the conditions: Last-minute preparation, Placido being in his 80s, Dimash not strictly being an opera singer, and all the rest. You all surely know by now that I believe Dimash to be one of the greatest singers alive. I have so much admiration for both of them, so try to view this more as a music lesson than anything else - that’s always how I intend my videos to be received. Much love to these singers and to all of you for the support!

Thanks for the honest warning, Peter. Placido Domingo is 83-years-old and Dimash isn't an opera singer; neither of them should be held to the same standard of, say, Vittorio Grigolo or Jonas Kaufmann. For those wanting professional reactions to this performance, I'd suggest Niall Morris (Bangkok Vocal Coach), the Grammy-nominated opera tenor, who has performed the same role as Dimash is singing here, dozens of times in concert halls around the world. I'm going to skip this one, Peter, but I'll see you on the next one.
@christine41098 ай бұрын
I'm looking forward to your reaction, but it sounds like you will be in hot water. I do think your approach is too rigid. A normal opera singer would have practiced this song since they were in school and practiced it for weeks before the show. Placido and Dimash had one day to prepare for it since Placido suggested to Dimash that they would sing something together when they met as judges in a talent contest. Placido has sung it thousand times but he is 83 years old now. Dimash does not sing opera but classical crossover. Dimash keeps the same approach, using whatever techniques he sees appropriate to sing the song while still respecting its roots. Why would you hold them to a very high standard of professional operatic singing?
@EllanaTs8 ай бұрын
@@Snarky_Tart I agree with your comment 100%! I am actually surprised Peter decided to react to this duet. Placido’s voice was sublime in his prime, and Dimash is not an opera singer, as you stated. I enjoy the duet for the harmonies both of them created and the beauty of Dimash’s voice.

@@christine4109 Hi Christine, it's probably best not to assume exactly what I say in a 45-minute analysis before listening to it. I am extremely respectful to all the conditions that came along with this performance: the last-minute preparation, Placido being past his prime as a singer, Dimash not strictly being an opera singer, all of it. If listeners take a second before having a knee-jerk reaction to my commentary, it will come across as reasonable, thoughtful, and insightful. If listeners blow up with anger the moment I say Dimash's operatic technique isn't perfect, then I'm sorry for those people, for they are missing out on some very interesting and varying opinions in life.

Knowing what a perfectionist Dimash is, his "soons" often last almost a year, singing with Domingo completely unprepared must have been a big challenge for him. He hadn't sung arias since he graduated from college at nineteen, and he might never have sung this duet, but how could he say no to a dream come true. And so, despite all the obstacles they had to overcome, they did wonderfully. Thank you for the competent analysis, Peter❤😊

Beautifully said! Yes, to see and hear them together is wonderful, something we who admire both of them thought would only be a dream! And to sing this beautiful duet is a dream come true. I think Domingo is brave to sing this with a young man with a voice like Dimash and it's humbling to see how Dimash manages to sing with a man decades older than he is, with a voice long past its prime, without overwhelming him, but supporting and allowing dignified space to his idol. A once in a lifetime performance we Dears will never forget!

One day of rehearsal, I consider this a beautiful performance and I tend to consider myself an opera snob. I shared this with my mother, who isn’t a fan of Dimash’s high range, she would prefer him to stay in this range, and she’s definitely an opera snob, having been offered a full scholarship to Juilliard . She said that this was beautiful, which absolutely stunned me, of course I agree. Considering this entire situation occurred because Maestro Domingo had invited Dimash to participate and he wanted to sing with Dimash, to me this is the greatest compliment.

Dimash is a big boy, I am sure he will appreciate it, too. Opera is not his genre, he sings classical crossovers, he creates his own genre. It takes many years of training after a degree in college to develop the resonance and operatic techniques in the voice to sing over an orchestra, to project the voice over the entire hall. Once the technique is on auto pilot, then comes the interpretation. I love to Watch Didonato’s master class for the way she taught talented young singers to express the lyrics. The reason they both keep looking down is reading the lyrics from the monitor since they decided to sing this aria one day before.

The beautiful and very VALUABLE thing about this performance is that; 1st, French is not his first language; 2nd, he had ONE day to learn it Because he was not going to lose this opportunity to sing with one of his inspirations. So, I guess many singers would have turned down this magnificent opportunity out of fear, but not Dimash! He is very determined to do and solve any issue or challenge that presents his way. He has done it a LOT! (for his concerts, shows, competitions) Like Chinese, English, Spanish, Armenian, French, etc, etc So, a "problem" with pronunciation, IS NEVER GOING TO STOP HIM from achieving whatever he wants. And that is what DIFFERENTIATES him from the REST of the common singers. I think this was, as always, a wonderful performance. He has my COMPLETE respect 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 If you truly appreciate music, you can FEEL the emotions through their voices no matter the language😉

Thank you that you took so much time for your analysis. It was fair critique on both and still a lot of praise for both. That’s how I expected your reaction to be. And I appreciate that you dare to criticize Dimash when it’s justified. Dimash himself takes fair criticism very well because it helps him to grow and to improve. The Virtuosos talent show announced today that tomorrow they will show some behind the scenes footage of Dimash and Domingo tomorrow on their KZbin channel. I think that’s going to be quite interesting.

So what? What Peter says is correct. Those little things are what Dimash would have to adjust v to be singing in true opera mode. Very slight changes, is what Peter says, that would clear the pathway to being an OPERA superstar as opposed to what Dimash is now: a pop star with an amazing range.

I have been awaiting this analysis eagerly. I watched the entire Virtuso 4 competition (Dimash was a judge, along with Placido, Placido Jr., Hauser, and more). Placido invited Dimash to do this performance. He was battling a cough that you could see when he would comment on some performer or another. 😅 while he has performed in French, and you can see him improve on SOS over the years, he doesn’t really speak the language. This duet was new to him, but he did get a rehearsal.

5 months later, watched the whole thing again. I get to critique Peter this time (and the editor). Way too repetitive, way too many pauses on particular parts (we get it the first time). Also, while I realize “reactors” try to react to a performance on the first time view, I really wish they would do some advance research. Peter might have critiqued a bit differently if he knew the setting, audience, etc. ahead of watching. Nevertheless, I did watch the entire episode in full a second time. I’ll probably hit it again in six months after I see his career advancement and see what more Dimash has done. Love ya, Peter. I’m going to try to get to Vegas to see Again and Again and Again in the fall.

Hearing Dimash caused a chain reaction in my music listening a few years ago and even brought me to your channel. Excellent reaction and analysis Peter. I know that some fans of certain people think they are they epitomy of perfection, when in reality no one is perfect nor can they ever be. As you said Dimash has chosen a wide ranging career at this point not strictly operatic performances and Placido is an elder statesman of the profession now. Both have earned their credentials and place in their respective arenas. As people who enjoy the musical arts all we really need do is enjoy. That being said as a technically minded person I do enjoy the analysis of a performance by someone like yourself who has taken years of their life to learn and develop technical skills I could never hope to master. it's a treat to watch the maestro placido domingo still performing in his 80s, when other opera singers much younger than he is are no longer doing so. it's also a positive thing to see the maestro still active on a professional level, as artist and mentor, belying all notions of ageism. after all, he really doesn't need to, having performed 151 different roles onstage, recorded more than 100 complete operas, received all the highest possible accolades that can be given a world-class tenor while conducting orchestras and even becoming an opera company artistic director. heck, owning a private jet and having a net worth of US$300-M would make a lesser person just vegetate into a life of leisure. so it's inspiring to see the maestro collaborate with younger artists like dimash qudaibergen even for just one song.

Interpretaron "Heal the World". 7. Paz y amor para todos. 💖💝🌸🌼⚘️💫✨️🇨🇱

This was certainly a very detailed reaction and taught us a lot about the operatic style of singing. But having said that, I do feel that sometimes there's a bigger art in critiquing a performance when looking at it in the whole and seeing it for what it is. This performance would certainly fall into such a category, especially since it was a long time dream of Dimash to sing a duet with Domingo, where clearly now, they are at completely different levels singing wise taking into consideration their age difference. This was simply a unique moment in time where 2 great singers joined together at short notice, and to critique it to such an extent where we all clearly know neither of them fits the operatic mould currently, was maybe not quite the right approach, even though it is what you specialise in. I think Domingo of all people, will be very aware of the shortcomings of his performance in this duet (if you insist), and certainly Dimash as well! This performance should be enjoyed as a moment where 2 great singers show their admiration, acknowledgement and respect for each other! 👏👏

Would Dimash appreciate Peter's professional comments? Yes, Dimash would have done that out of politeness and good upbringing. But that's it. Dimash fully well understands what he's doing. He's very much of a professional for that. Even more than Peter, for Dimash has been a judge in an opera singing competition. To pretend to be an opera singer when he's not, would have been disrespectful to maestro Domingo. Dimash doesn't pretend, he sings his part in the duet in his neoclassical crossover style. Domingo has done his fair share in the crossover genre, even before the Three Tenors. He often does that with his son nowadays. Inviting Dimash, he fully understood that their duet will not be restricted to the rigid opera rules. He went into the duet with the full respect for Dimash, the same as Dimash. All they wanted was to enjoy their collaboration and bring moments of joy to their listeners. The result was admiration and delight. Thank you, masters D&D❤❤❤

Many bel canto teachers have verified that Dimash brings a cross interpretation between rigid classical singing (which must follow norms and exactly as the author of the piece wrote, from the notes and durations, the portamentos, the expressiveness... Everything) and much more popular flexibility. For purists, let's remember that Dimash had the dream of singing with Plácido Domingos since he was a child and it was the Maestro himself, Don Domingos, who suggested the duet (he knew that even with classical training, Dimash would sing as a cross between classical and pop )! Dimash only had one day to remember the work and make the recording, as this moment is part of the competition (like a talent show) for children with musical talent: The “Virtuosos”! Dimash, as well as Placido Domingos, were part of the Jury, accompanied by Erika Miklósa (opera singer), Adrás Keller (violinist, conductor and musical director of the Budapest Concert), Hauser (cellist), Plácido Domingos Jr. (singer and composer), Pablo Sanz Villegas (classical guitarist), Gabriela Rachid (cultural director) and Harvey Goldsmith (music promoter)! The show was in Budapest (Hungary) from January 16th to 26th this year, 2024!

I watched the competition; the competitors were musicians and vocalists who were under 21. The judges were drawn from classical instumentalists and a couple singers in addition to Dimash and Placido Domingo. So those two were pretty much the judges of the classical vocalists.

This was not an opera competition. Maestro Domingo and Dimash were part of a panel of judges that heard young classical virtuosos from Eastern Europe. The judges you see range from Hauser, a cellist, to Placido Domingo Jr. and a number of other classical specialists. This was a special concert done by the Maestro and Dimash. Dimash did have a cough the day of the performance, yet he still sounds brilliant. It is a testament to the greatness of these two men that this is one of the warmest and most widely watched version of this duet. I understand you're being hyper-critical here, but hey give credit where it's due please.

So this is not an operatic singing competition. It’s actually a symphony instrument competition. The part I featured 2 pianists, an oboist and a violinist all competing for grand prize. Placido and Dimash are judges that sit at the long table. They are not being judged here. They just took the opportunity of them being in the same place to perform together. There’s another video you might be interested in, if you haven’t already discovered it, where Dimash meets Andrea Bocelli and they perform a little Besame Mucho in Bocelli’s dressing room, which has a piano. No microphone or amplification, just pure power by Dimash. It feels like the paint would start peeling from the wall had it lasted longer.

Thanks for the video. I enjoyed watching it. It was very interesting to hear someone who knows opera critique Dimash's singing in this context. I don't really know much about music at all, so I rely on those who do to let me know how well Dimash sings. I think you were very fair in this. Dimash hasn't spent his recent time working on opera so of course he wouldn't be as good at it as someone who has. It was really nice to hear that you think he would be on Placido Domingo's level if he devoted himself to opera! And it was equally nice to hear that you think it would have been a waste of his abilities to have done so. Placido's grandson brought Dimash to his attention and he was delighted to meet him, and Dimash, of course, has looked up to Placido his whole life. Placido said, "We have to sing together!" and I'm sure it was a dream come true for Dimash! One of the few benefits of knowing so little about proper singing is that I can really enjoy this duet without noticing the flaws! 😆 I think the idea that Dimash had been sick may have come from the fact that he was coughing a bit during the video of he and Placido meeting. Thanks again! 🇨🇦

Couple of things to keep in mind: Dimash was "invited" to be a judge at the Virtuosos 2023 competition in Hungary by one of the events' shareholders, Maestro Placido Domingo. Also, Maestro "invited" Dimash to sing an operatic duet with him at this widely advertised and televised competition. I would think Maestro wouldn't have suggested an operatic duet if he felt Dimash wouldn't be able to do a decent (not perfect) job. Thank you for your critique, and I get where you're coming from. I also agree that if they had even 2-3 more rehearsals to clean up the lyrics and the timing, they would have smashed this. It's clear that Dimash is not solely an opera singer, and it shows here. However, I am grateful that Dimash chose *not* to develop as an opera singer. Once you choose the opera route, you can't do much else. I remember in the early 1980s, Placido did a duet ballad with John Denver ("Perhaps Love"). Everybody raved how beautiful it was, but vocally it was a disaster. Placido couldn't let go of the spin and John Denver couldn't spin to save his life, so they clashed mightily. So for Dimash, it's better to give up on pure opera so that he can retain his purer crossover sound. We need him in crossover!

👉 The world stands still for this moment and everyone holds their breath. A singing teacher calls them the two musical titans...yes, yes, yes! This duet was Dimash's dream and it is coming true. What an honor for our beloved Dimash and a great joy for Maestro Domingo…. And I was bathed in tears of joy. I'm sooo happy. Dimash was asked to participate as a judge in the competition for young classical musicians... and then... he gave us dear ones this wonderful jewel. Maestro Domingo invited Dimash to sing the duet with him the day before. Dimash only had a short night to learn this song in French... and besides, Dimash had a cold with a cough. (You notice it more clearly in the second song at the end of the concert.) Dimash would never act recklessly towards his duet partners. With good manners and respect, he would never drown out Maestro Domingo (then still 82) with his voice. He even adapts to Maestro Domingo's vocal color. Dimash opens a new world to many Dears... the world of classical music. You should definitely watch the video (look at the end of the comment)... so many young, talented musicians and the sensitive assessment of the jurors... Great!!! ... and the legendary duet of Maestro Domingo and Dimash Qudaibergen! * Plácido Domingo (*1941 Madrid/Spain) is already a legend today. He is a world-renowned, versatile artist and is considered one of the best and most influential singers in opera history, with more than 150 roles and over 4,000 performances celebrated by audiences on stages around the world. He sings tenor and baritone and was one of the three tenors with Carreras and Pavarotti in the 90s. Maestro Domingo is also a conductor and promoter of young talent, winner of 12 Grammy Awards and recipient of honorary degrees and awards for his humanitarian work. Peter, I’m a massive “Dear” and I found your analysis of Dimash’s performance both fair and extremely complimentary actually. I hope you’ll have a chance to do “El Amor En Ti” from the Almaty concert. (The video is on Dimash’s channel.) It’s “operatic” if not purely opera (you’ve taught me the difference, lol). And it’s Dimash x 4. I think you’ll enjoy and appreciate.

A very interesting analysis. I learned new things and what to listen to in this piece. But that aside, we have to acknowledge that this was a Now or Never moment. I think we have to be quite tender in our critique and humbly recognise that this did not happen for our benefit. It was their thing. Dimash's old dream of singing with Domingo and Domingo's (I suppose) experience of giving the torch to the next generation. It was so much more happening here on intangible levels.

Thank you! Finally someone has the courage to point out Dimash is not perfect in everything he does. I totally appreciate his unbelievable talent and I believe that had he had enough time to prepare this would have been great. It does sound very nice, it's a lovely duet and I think he and Placido sound good together. I am an opera buff and as such, I have loved Placido for years. I know, he's not what he was, but I am floored by how good he still sounds. When I saw this come up on KZbin I almost didn't watch because I was afraid that Placido would sound awful and I didn't want that to be my last memory of him. I was so relieved. He 😮 A final note: I listen to the Met broadcasts and I have heard a few baritones who should wish they sound as good as Placido at 82.

Loved the beauty of this duo, also loved Dimash with Aida Garifulina and Lara Fabian. As to the languages, he is very good at Italian, and Japanese. Lately they say he was perfect with Armenian, and Turkish. His problems are English and Chinese, two languages he has to sing most often. French and Spanish are heavily accented, but understandable. Plus of course, Kazakh and Russian as two "native" languages. So, if we are talking about music, that's his language. You can't expect him to sing in all the world languages without accent, it is unreal, especially having compositions in ten languages in one concert.
