This is a really good interview. He's 100% correct, i'll take it a step further. I don't know anyone that has been playing professionally, with poker as their sole form of income, that still wants to play professionally....they all want to get out. Everyone has another form of income, it's mandatory! Poker is SOOO much harder than it was a few years ago, it's tough

Appreciate that input Jaman! What you said about those that are doing it are looking to get out. That’s probably the best piece that could have been added here, thanks.

I have loved and played the game profitably for years. I have always toyed with the idea of going “pro”. One year I decided that while I was at the WSOP, I would grind the daily deep stack tournaments to give my bankroll the biggest chance to hit and build. Not only is it stressful and difficult but it also tends to be very tedious and boring for most of the time that you are grinding.

Yeah, I think it’s really easy to destroy the part of the game that is fun when your motives change

U can do it in a place like the Philippines because rent for a nice condo is like 300 a month and the poker scene is huge

making $50k/yr in CA or Vegas is not something one can "live on". health insurance is ignored by singles. if one has a mate that is employed with an income that pays the bills.......different story. i am 75 and have made over $30/hr playing live 1/2 for 15 years........key is GAME SELECTION. true if i "had to" play for a living things would be different. for me, if a game is not great and there are no great games available to change to, i simply go home. i mostly play late at night and most of the time, the games are GREAT. there are so many tilted, drunk degens playing these games, it is unreal. having a huge bankroll also helps. love your videos and that you keep it real.

Great stuff Paul! That game selection piece is so important. $30/hr at 1/2 is a fantastic win rate!

@@cardsandcapital no money pressure, good at reading tells and instigating straddles. i also look like an OMC and get bluffed at a lot and also steal a lot of pots. Mr Harris is so wrong about what some good medium stake players win. the REAL winners park their EGOS at the door. if not, then Mr Harris is spot on.

We talked about some of this in the live stream and he said something to the effect that if you’re too proud to step down for the highest win rate, then you’re hurting your bottom line. I think instead, he would say something to the effect that $50k per year is something you can live on if you are willing to accept a very low standard of living. To your point, that 50k doesn’t include any benefits, and raising a family on that alone is extremely difficult and not as fantastic as it is portrayed. I think you would probably agree on most things.
@paulmaier63052 ай бұрын
@@cardsandcapital participating in ANYTHING with variance when your living standards are in jeopardy is NOT PLEASANT and surely most people would not want that. too much FREE information has turned the big fish into minnows. raising a family as a mid stakes poker pro is INSANE. when there are not enough players that play worse than you, any game is not beatable. that goes for playing the markets as well.
@GoodHandPoker2 ай бұрын
@@paulmaier6305everything is self reported….so. You made 30/hr at 1/2 for 15 years playing 2-3 thousand hours a year? and you also had a secondary income? I’m just confused on what he is saying I’m wrong at.

watched 2 minutes and cut it off not watching further to see if he clarifies, but I will agree that there seems to be truth in the notion that many vloggers are well diversified, and that their poker style itself isn't super sustainable as a career (rampage being the most obvious example) however, his speculation on no low stakes pros existing is patently false. i know this from my own experience and many friends and associates the one commenter speaking on cost of living in CA and LV is much closer in terms of the downsides. but there are absolutely quite a few people making six figures in cash games with buyins over $1k. it's possible to do in $500 buyin games if you play around 2k hrs/year, but the number who do that is obviously exceedingly small
@GoodHandPokerАй бұрын
I didn’t say they didn’t exist, what I am saying DOES NOT exist is surviving ONLY from poker winning with absolutely no other income stream. I would love to see proof of a live player doing it… Online is a different world.
