I found a gorgeous wool cashmere blazer for my son at a charity shop & I've been putting off adjusting the shoulders, because everyone says it's so difficult. With 50yrs of sewing experience, & having watched your logical process, I realised I should have had more faith in myself from the start. It's going to look fabulous, thank you!

I like to get Men’s jackets from the thrift shop to wear. I have just let the shoulders alone because I am afraid of doing the alteration you show in this video. After watching, I’m still afraid, but might give it a try. Thanks.

Thank you for showing your method of raising or narrowing the shoulder on jackets. Being a petite (5 ft tall) I have to do this every time I buy a ready made jacket. I use this method at the same time shortening the sleeves by cutting a new sleeve cap. This preserves the sleeve vent and buttons at the hem. Using different color tailor tacks, or markings, is a great idea. Yea, I've come close to switching sleeves.

Men’s jackets are fashionable for women this fall. So I just bought a black and white herringbone jacket at the thrift store and I’m going to take in the shoulders and let out the sleeves. I’m so excited to wear it this winter!

@@thatxonexguy5438 as you are still young, I'd recommend to go to tailoring school and while you are at it, do as much tailoring you can make mostly for yourself and a little bit for others. Sewing for yourself will give you feedback on the areas you need to improve but also on the things you are doing well. Sewing for others will give you a good perspective on people's expectations. Cheers 🙂

I love your videos. I'm trying to develop this skill and they are basically a free class. Thank you so much. Btw I always use children's washable felt tip pens to mark fabric, it comes right off in the wash and you can color code things if you need to. (Of course this isn't suitable for all fabrics).

Good morning. This was very helpful. Would you, please, consider making another video for fixing a large hole on the lining? The satin lining on my husbands suit jacket ripped away from the side seam and the material is now all shredded. It has also grown into a large rip and hole (he should have told me earlier!). Anyway, I can't find any matching lining fabric and I'm not sure how to patch it up. Any ideas? Thank you.

I need some help. I bought a wool winter jacket that has sleeves so sloped, I cannot put my hands in the hip or breast pockets without the whole thing riding up. It's drop-shouldered. I'm unsure if the alteration needs a gusset or a full sleeve. When it went on sale, I purchased two so that I would have fabric to raise the shoulder cap (same as you have here) and draft two sleeves will a fuller range of movement. I've never seen this alteration done before.

What if a blazer needs to be shortened at the shoulder seam that connects the sleeve to the collar? I'm very short, so shortening the hem doesn't fix the elongated proportion. I think adding a seam at the shoulder seam on a soft-constructed blazer would work, right? Love to see a video on that!

Hi there, thanks for another great video! I do this alteration at my shop, but I only unpick the sleeves about 3/4 of the way, leaving them stitched together at the underarm below where I am trimming away for the new shoulder line. Do you think it is necessary to take them completely off?
@DowntownTailoring
@DowntownTailoring 2 жыл бұрын
Not really. I'd say is ok as long you are absolutely sure you're going to connect the old a new line properly. I mean, sometimes it might be difficult to visualize a good armhole line when you have the sleeves still attached. But for an experience tailor/seamstress, is not really that hard. I hope this helps 😊

Thank you so much! As usual I learned something new today! I really like the trick of the reenforced sleeves in a future when I do some kind of coat I will use it, maybe... If I remember it! 🤭 But I don't think I will do an alteration like this like someone else commented it's too scary!!! Probably I will think about it and keep thinking about it for soo long that I would be afraid to even start the unstitching!!! Doesn't the sleeve pitch change when you shift the shoulders? You would have to rotate the entire sleeve slightly when sewing it back on, because I would imagine connecting it at the same spot would cause the pitch to change.
@DowntownTailoring
@DowntownTailoring 2 жыл бұрын
That's an excellent question!!! And the answer is yes and not. I measure the high more than the point. That's why you see me marking it with a horizontal to the floor line. If you apply internal and external angles theorem you will notice what I mean ( saying that to the risk of looking too 🤓 nerdy!) 😭😭😭 But I love this question and I thought about it for a long time until I discovered that I can avoid the problem by marking this way. Cheers 😊
