"Le concert" is actually a really good movie, I'd recommend it. This violin soloist gets asked to play Tchaikovsky with an orchestra that was disbanded years ago because they stood up to the political regime in Russia. They've all gone their own way, and haven't practised in years. But the conductor gets them all back together, however they dont rehearse begore the big opening and thats why it's absolutely horrific at the beginning, but once the soloist starts to play, they all slowly come together. The movie is about the magic of coming together through music, putting aside any differences, and reaching for perfection. Absolutely recommend it, well worth the watch, and the main actress (Mélanie Laurent) is amazing. Granted, violin skills aren't great but the acting is top notch otherwise :)
@RayChenViolinist Жыл бұрын
Wow this is super insightful! Ok but what about the super annoying guy? What’s his role?
@Lindraella Жыл бұрын
@@RayChenViolinist so basically he used to be in the orchestra that was disbanded, but then he kind of went back to his family and didn't play professionally anymore. Many of these musicians are quite poor and end up playing on the street or with groups of Gypsies. This guy in question is definitely annoying, and the context is that the orchestra members have been basically partying in Paris instead of rehearsing (because they get a chance to travel there for the first time in their life). The soloist (the woman) is annoyed that they think they don't need to rehearse and questions their competence. The guy starts to show off to prove they can still play. Obviously at the end, on he day of the concert, it starts off awful because they haven't played in 30 years lol. But they all come together and deliver an incredible performance in the end. I don't know who scored it but it was awesome! Except they had to cut part of the concerto to make it a bit shorter. But they still left a long 15-20min scene of the actual concert at the end.
@kw3560 Жыл бұрын
@@Lindraella Thank you for your well explained summary! I also love this movie and in fact, I LOVE the "super annoying guy" hahahaha! He is a very respected gypsy violinist, Anghel Gheorghe. To illuminate the spotlight in the 18 hundreds. That was actually possible at the time, not in that modern color tone but it could be done. You would reflect a strong lamp through a lens and mirror contraption. Loui the 14 used this in some of his stage plays even earlier when depicting the sun god. Though it was a heavy, cumbersome and expensive apparatus. Unlikely to be in a place like the one in the movie and it’s light would have been less focused and very jellow.

I think that's supposed to be limelight. It was discovered in 1820s, was used at Covent Garden Theatre from 1837 and became widespread in 1860s at theatres. So it couldn't have been used at that concert but it's not that far off either.

David Garrett played Paganini in the Devil's Violinist and he made the musical arrengements too. In Le concert, the guy playing the Paganini No. 24 is an actual violinist. His name is Gheorghe „Caliu“ Anghel , comes from Romania , he belongs to the Romani people and is the director of the band "Taraf de Caliu" which was founded as replacement of "Taraf de Haïdouks" (fun fact: Menuhin was fan of them) .

9:25 That’s Gheorghe Anghel Caliu, a Romanian violinist of rromani ethnicity from the lăutari group “Taraf de Haidouks” ;) He did not study music theory _*at all_*(and doesn’t even know how to sight read)and plays all of his pieces by ear. The “definitely not Ravel” music is in fact a traditional rromani piece played at Romanian weddings. Kind of a fun fact, Caliu did not practice the Paganini piece before filming, he hadn’t played it before in his life; instead he listened to it 20 minutes before filming and was then able to play it, so mad respect to this guy. For context, the whole plot of the movie revolves around the life of a conductor for the Bolshoi orchestra in the communist period . He hired Jewish and rromani musicians during ww2 I believe and was fired for this. Now the conductor works as a lowly janitor but is given the opportunity to reunite his orchestra and perform in Paris. The character played by Caliu is a rroma man who did not receive any formal education and experiences hardships and discrimination from the classical musical society, thus mirroring Caliu’s own experiences with racism and elitism in the industry. If you want to find more about traditional Romanian/Rromani music you should check Taraf de Haidouks out, it’s definitely an acquired taste but this type of music truly reflects the dying culture of the lăutari 💞
