Hi Ray. The violin part in Whisper of the Heart (耳をすませば) was played in A=392Hz tuning by Kaoru "Kao" Uemura. She wrote a blog post on the recording. Here's the summary of her blog post on Jul 10, 2010: _The arrangement of Country Road was originally written in G. Unfortunately, it was too high for the vocalist; the arranger and I (Kao) decided to play it in F by dropping every string by a whole tone. Thanks to the tuning, the sound became mellow and matched with other period instruments well._ (I omit the URL so this post won't be classified as a spam; also updated the translation.)

@@BreakofDawn The thing is also contextual. Seiji is not so good in his playing, he prefers to make violins and Shizuku isn't into singing. However, the CD rendition is definitely a bit higher, as in the movie the out of tune singing was important to the story (she gets better, as she sings).

The violinist Kao who played in the Whisper of the Heart wrote in her blog that she tuned in FCGD. She kept the violin in that drop tuning for 3 days, and this made the tone of open strings softer. The piece was originally in G but it was a bit high for the voice actor so she needed to play in F instead.

Context for Nodame Cantabile! Everyone there is a student at a conservatory. Nodame, the female lead, is a very skilled pianist, but she has a tendency to learn music by ear, and 're-arrange' pieces by instinct as she plays. This is seen as an issue by quite a few people because of the whole 'classical musicians must play the pieces note for note in order to convey what the original composer intended', especially later in the series when Nodame decides to go for competition. Chiaki (the other pianist and male lead) is a prodigy pianist/violinist who wants to be an orchestral conductor, and he often calls out Nodame for the 'haphazard' and 'out of control' playing in which she improvises notes here and there, but even right from the start, he found her interpretations interesting and unique. Out of all the music animes, Nodame Cantabile is definitely one of the best, especially in the way they portray the difficulties of being a musician (esp classical musician in our modern day and age). They deal with the issues of abusive teachers, burnout, the financial woes of playing music, the uncertainty of making music a career after graduation, the goods and bads of being competitive in music, and more. It does come in for its share of dramatization and romance plotlines, but it's got great character development and excellent humour, and I'd definitely recommend anyone who loves classical music to check the whole thing out! I'm not sure if anything was changed in post-processing/editing for the Whisper of the Heart scene, but the violin part was recorded by violinist Uemura Kaoru, and she is credited as violinist (not violist), so I'm assumingggg it's a violin? 8'D Other than that, Sakamichi no Apollon (also known as Kids on the Slope) has some great portrayals of musicians (mostly jazz, but the lead character started with only classical training).

This is interesting, thanks for sharing about Nodame Cantabile! It kind of makes me think of someone like Glenn Gould, who played so much of Bach's repertoire and a lot of times with his own 'flair'. And especially with Bach when that period of music is often see as more "strict" or "rigid", it's interesting to have a pianist break away from some of those notions.

Really enjoying you being confused by baroque tuning! Early music ensembles near me (England) almost always tune to 415Hz, the first time I went to a workshop which did so it threw me so much, but I made myself keep trying at home and now I can cope with both modern and baroque pitch. (I've also tried playing without a chin rest but that's a whole other level of challenge!) I bet you could train your ear to it if you tried, it'd be really fun to hear you have a go on Tonic. As for the E string that's "too mellow", maybe it's a gut string to fit the baroque vibe?

I highly recommend both Your Lie in April and Nodame Cantabile. They're two of the best anime series about music that I've ever watched, and Nodame is one of my all-time favorite anime, period. Both of them take the music side of things quite seriously and a lot of the story is about classical music, which is cool. There are also some other anime featuring music I'd recommend: * Forest of Piano - All about a piano prodigy. The bulk of the story takes place at the Chopin Competition. The piano animation must've been rotoscope because it's quite correct. * Carole and Tuesday - A story about a pop/folk/rock duo on Mars. The music is really good and the animation is amazing. The music performance animation is all rotoscoped and incredibly accurate. I kind of freaked out when I saw the guitar playing and realized her hands were spot on with every chord. * Beck - About a boy who starts playing guitar and joins a rock band. I watched it a long time ago so I don't remember how accurate the animation is, but it's a great story and the music is awesome. * Detroit Metal City - A hilarious comedy anime about a guy who wants to be a pop singer but finds success as a death metal musician. Again, I don't remember how good the animation is but the show is incredibly funny. * Bocchi the Rock - About an all-girl rock band where the lead guitarist has intense social phobie. It's largely about her struggles with actually interacting with people and performing on stage. Great show. * Kids on the Slope - About two high schoolers playing jazz. The music animation is amazing. I mostly noticed the drumming, which is pretty much perfect. Another one that was rotoscoped. It's also a great story. Highly recommended! * Liz and the Blue Bird - About two girls in a high school wind band. The music is a metaphor for their relationship. A beautiful and touching film. There's probably more I've watched that I'm forgetting.

YLIA and Nodame are definitely the two gold standards for music anime. So much care and attention was put into the music scenes for both _because_ music is so integral to the plot, the characters, and the inter-character relationships. If they had slacked even a tiny bit with the music and animation for those two shows, the plot itself and the stories they were trying to tell would have suffered for it, even to the lay (not musically trained) audience. Outside of the anime sphere, Pixar's Coco and Soul were both similarly very music-focused, and invested a LOT of R&D and animation budget to ensure the music animation was as authentic as possible.

As a guy who was a bit involved (and failed miserably) as a child musician... I would love to think what you think about Your Lie in April. There's so much about the pressure of being a child and learning classical music and instruments and the effect it has on kids... As an adult, I appreciate that I was "forced" to learn and "compete" (I now play only for fun, but that wasn't what it was at the time. I'm glad I did it even if the pressure made me suicidal at times - maybe that's just me, but I don't think so)... but the anime really explores the dichotomy of loving the music and hating the environment. To clarify... I'd like to know more about how you feel how it demonstrates how it FEELS to be a musician. I feel like this anime really touches on something that maybe a lot of kids are put through... maybe something I would consider "torture" (but maybe... I just wasn't "good enough" maybe). But I would do not regret going through it. There's so many KZbin videos about technique, but I would love to hear about the human experience of playing the music, the process of becoming the good/best, and the failures of falling short. Or at least, that's what I think this anime does very well. I never made it too far, but I feel like it touched that part of me that tried. You made it. Do you think this anime relates to what you were going through when you were "coming up"? Or is it just me? I feel like Your Lie in April really touches on how it feels to be... I dunno... how a child might feel if their entire life depended on getting into Curtis?
There's an anime out now called Blue Orchestra where they've done a good job to match up the animation to what's actually being played.

In the realm where strings enchant the soul, Where melodies weave their tales untold, There lies a world of vibrant animation, Where anime music stirs deep admiration. Within this realm, a violinist stands, With serious demeanor, bow in hand, But when the strains of anime arise, A transformation occurs before our eyes. With each stroke of the bow, emotions ignite, As the violinist transcends to new heights, Notes cascade, like petals on a gentle breeze, Unlocking the heart, setting the spirit at ease. Anime music, a portal to realms unseen, Whispers secrets, paints dreams, as it weens, It dances through time, transcending space, Creating symphonies in the heart's embrace. In tender moments, it pulls heartstrings tight, Conveying love's longing, an ethereal flight, Then in battles fierce, its energy ascends, Igniting fervor, courage it commends. From poignant ballads to spirited refrains, Anime music, a myriad of sonic strains, It tells tales of heroes, of love and strife, Echoing through the tapestry of life. And the serious violinist, once confined, Finds freedom, as anime's world unwinds, For within those melodies, a symphony awakes, A fusion of passion, the violinist partakes. So let us celebrate this harmony divine, Where anime and violin intertwine, For in that union, beauty is unfurled, Impressing even the most serious of the world.

Whisper of the Heart is one of my all time favorite movies period. It is so not my style, but it still captured me. The violin scene strikes me in particular in that it is an empowering scene for a woman who is feeling low. To me that is the real power of that scene. Plus Whisper of the Heart makes me so nostalgic for when I lived in Japan!

As both a violinist and violist, AND someone with perfect pitch…I can completely relate to your struggle!!! The first Bach excerpt was definitely all strings tuned down the same distance (like in Baroque tuning). But the second song sounded almost like how some guitarists use unique tunings (open tuning), and maybe even use gut strings? Of course, it could have also been the product of a computer program synthesizing a violin sound with whatever pitches the composer wanted. From the web: “Open tunings” are when the unfretted or open strings of the guitar are tuned in such a way as to sound a specific chord. Different open tunings are prevalent in a wide variety of musical styles such as blues, rock, country and folk. The most commonly used open guitar tunings are open E, D, G and A.” This makes sense since the song in the movie was in a “folk” style.

Bro literally used scordatura on his STRAD for viola tuning! TwoSet would never! Ray is a legend for this!

Animator here glad to see people look closely at animation, music scenes are expensive and labour intensive😅.

In terms of control and does it need to be in control...you would have a field day with bands like 'Polyphia' and 'Animals as Leaders'. It's just beautiful chaos. Only instrumentals. I think outside of 'Your Lie in April', one that is currently ongoing is 'Ao no Orchestra', it's about a violinist that won competitions solo, retired, and in high school winds up going into his first orchestra and figuring out how playing in a group is so different than solo.

Something about competitive pianists that make sure to follow scores explicitly. Competitive pianists are different from concerto pianists. As one of the stereotypical koreans that have been playing piano since early childhood, definitely a classically trained kid and have struggled with personal ideas because "my ideas aren't written into the score"...

Ray, there is a series (not anime version) of this entitled Nodame Cantabile which shows the lives of music students in a Conservatory School. You might want to watch it so you'll understand better the duet of Nodame and Chiaki.

The subs in nodame (the second one) were really bad. They don’t say out of control, they say 超絶技巧 which means like extreme technical mastery.

Kinda sad they didn’t do any violin scenes for Nodame… Chiaki plays the violin and many of the side characters does as well.

Ef: A tale of the two is one of the best visual novels of all time, if anoyne of you has the chance you should play the VN over watching the anime. A masterpiece of a story, and the soundtrack is beautiful.

Hahaha perfect pitch problems. I laughed out loud because I reacted at the exact same time to the baroque tuning (A=415 :)) I’ve never tried to play the violin in baroque tuning but as a professional singer I can tell you that it gets difficult there too when transposing!

There are so few music anime out there that I always have to give each one a try. And there are some gems out there. You should totally do a small series on music anime! Nodame Cantabile is great. Kids on the Slope is also top tier. Your Lie in April is solid. You might also like Given if you're feeling adventurous and math-rocky
