This franchise was the best selling Nintendo franchises in the UK for a very long time. Every store shelf was packed with them with every new release. I think when Lost Future came out Toys R' Us had like nearly 1500 copies in store. I don't know, I was only like 4 or 5 at the time, but I can remember every store I went to Professor Layton was one of the most trending game franchises, along with Halo, Batman Arkham and Uncharted.

So lovely seeing people STILL picking this franchise up to this day. I got into it when I was 11-12 (2010 ish) and I am still playing it now. I have all the games, the spin offs, and I cannot find enough people to geek out with about this 🥳 Infact I'm holding off on finishing PL vs AA because, like you, I don't want the day to come where I have no more Layton to play :( Also yes, they did Flora so dirty. I wondered if they had her as being less significant so that if you picked up any of the prequel games you wouldn't need loads of background information as to where she's from (as can you imagine condensing St. Mystere into a quick snippet for newer players? 😂)

Yup, I can confirm that you can pretty much start with every game and it’s a lot enjoyable! I went with the 4-3-5-6-2-1 (yeah, a dumbass way to play Professor Layton 😅) . Spoiler warning below . . . . . . . I have to admit I would love to either forget everything about the games or make someone who has never heard of the games play them in the canonical order (4-5-6-1-2-3), just to see how amazed we’d be by having to solve an inheritance case right after preventing the apocalypse and dying and coming back to life 🙂

Hi, I just watched this video and you did a great job. It's always great to see other people who love these games as much as I do. The Professor Layton series has a very special place in my heart, having grown up with it and having played every single game when it first came out. As a wee little lad, the thing I liked most about them was actually the writing and the characters. As a kid, the twists blew my mind and I loved them. Looking back, the premise of the stories is pretty bullshit, but I wouldn't say they are bad per se. The writing does have its own rules as in, there's no supernatural events and everything must have some sort of "logical explanation", as ridiculous as that may be. Within the reality of the series, if you accept the absolutely ludicrous things that happen, the stories do work, and I think some of them are absolutely beautiful. Lost Future is to this day the saddest video game I've ever played. I always loved the characters, the music and the atmosphere of the games. My favourite game in the series is Spectre's Call, I think because it's the most layton-esque of them all. A small countryside town crowded in mist and fog, very eerie and melancholic music, a very somber feeling throughout, but it's also very calming and pleasant. Gosh, I think it's just great how the games make you appreciate little things like enjoying a nice cup of tea or whatever it is some character in a puzzle is trying to do! I think it's hilarious how in this video you said you hadn't finished the game yet, and at a different point you made a joke about the explanation being a dinosaur. I wonder what the end of Spectre's Call made you think. However, I want to say Miracle Mask has my favourite story and set of characters, and it might have actually surpassed SC as my favourite game. As a kid, I thought the plot was too predictable, but looking back, it's the only plot that's not complete bullshit and that you can actually piece together while you play the game! And it's soooo wholesome. I genuinely love it. The other games break your heart, but that game is just... beautiful?! I wonder if you've played through all of the games by now and what you thought of the prequel games. The games got a lot more colourful and vibrant starting with Miracle Mask, and the music has gotten a lot more varied. They have a very different feel, but I think they're still great (Azran Legacy not nearly as much though). I've heard from Ace Attorney fans who played the crossover that they liked it a lot, but didn't end up playing the Layton games because of that game's ending, which is a shame. This series is fantastic and I wish more people would play it.

THAT CAT PUZZLE. YES. WHY. I held an entire speech about that particular puzzle to my family only days ago. It was very similar to your frustration in this video. Some of the Layton puzzles are… something X”D Anyway, amazing video! The Professor Layton games are very close to my heart (especially with hint coins/not-exactly-useful-hints having become a meme in my family) and it is sad to see so few people talking about this amazing series. Personally, I quite love the over-the-top plots, as long as I have accepted that I probably won't be solving them by myself :"D Now that some time has passed since this video was uploaded, what do you think of the prequel games? A lot of people seem to have enjoyed them less than the sequel/original trilogy, so I am curious to hear your opinion ^-^ Btw, there is also a movie (Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva) which feels like an actual Layton game, so I recommend watching that if you haven’t already! It takes place between Spectre’s Call and Miracle Mask and is even referenced in both games, I believe.

I assume the reason you never heard of it is you live outside of the UK or Japan- I’m from America and these games were my childhood, I followed them at peak popularity, got one each year they came out, and I only ever knew one other person who had even heard of the games. But apparently in the UK these games were some of Nintendo’s best selling titles and warranted being considered a main Nintendo icon, being advertised all the time. They even got a theatrical release for the movie! And of course it was popular in it’s home country of Japan. But yeah, I know that in America, NO ONE played this game which was very saddening to little me who was ADDICTED from age 8-14.

this video is really confusing, the title is obviously praise for the franchise but you open by ragging on the puzzles (and yeah the quality does vary.) Who was this video for? is it for people already acquainted with the Layton franchise? what's the narrative? why should I re-play them. What was your favourite moment? Is it for someone new to the franchise? Who's Layton? Should I like the puzzles? why should I play a game made for a console that released in 2001? Is the way puzzles are integrated bad? The video and audio quality on this is also not the greatest and honestly a bit distracting. I feel like a phone might do a better job, but this is clearly a passion project. I don't say any of this to be mean, you seem enthusiastic and you *say* you like the games, you've got potential. I think the enthusiasm just needs focus. As someone who got here from a video on Nintendo trivia who *really wants to finish playing Layton* I just kinda don't know what I subjected my eyes to for the past 7 minutes. The DS is a nostalgic console, just inject pure Layton nostalgia into my veins.

All fair points tbh, this is definitely the least focused of any of my videos lol.
