I know some LPers don't, but in a game like this, you shouldn't afraid to react during the cutscenes. Most of the shocking and emotional moments that we'll want to witness your reactions to will likely be in cutscenes, as that is how the Layton series has always been.

You missed a puzzle, too, by talking to Barton after talking to him and Chelmy the first time. You have to talk to people even after such conversations.
