It’s important for everyone to remember that Peterson is not speaking against transgender people. Nor is he even speaking against nonbinary identifies folks. All he is doing is speaking against a bill that could potentially be used to compel speak and compel adherence to a certain ideology about gender.
@sandmand40363 жыл бұрын
But he has done so previously. It's oddly convenient of him to be in opposition to this bill when (if you've read the bill or any experts opinion on it) it only adds gender identity and gender expression to an already existing list of protected classes. You can't do hate speech against people based on sex, religion, race etc. and now also gender expression and identity, what's the big deal? (im specfically talking about the bill that can affect speech, it also did other things) This isn't the nail in the coffin for free speech, which is why it's odd to be so strongly opposed to it.
@umwha3 жыл бұрын
@@sandmand4036 My understanding is that it adds gender expression and gender identity to protected classes. Makes sense. The problem is that these identities are not always like the others. For instance, someone who identifies as nonbinary Xe/Xem wishes to be refered to as such. If you do not believe either in the identity of a Xe/Xem or you do not wish for whatever reason to endorse their identification as Xe/Xem, then you are erasing an identity thought to be inalianable. It may also upset the person, and they may bring up the high trans-suicide rate to illustrate the point that everybody should affirm everyones gender identity and to not do so is violence, and hate speech. Thus, everybody would have to use words and concept like Xe/Xem, demi-gray masc a-gender, etc, or risk committing a hate crime. The Bill leaves a grey area over whether people would be allowed to not affirm someones elses identity signifies.
@rowanaforrest97923 жыл бұрын
@@umwha The way I see it is this: #1) This bill would punish "hate speech" toward trans people. #2) This law gives trans or Q people a special "right" to demand that people speak to them as they prefer, ergo speaking incorrectly to them can be judged "violence or hatred" if they get upset and complain. #3) When a law threatens to punish people for failing to speak a certain way, the law effectively compels people's speech as the only way they can protect themselves/avoid risk with certainty. The law cannot say, "We're not compelling you to use certain speech. You're free to refuse," but then add, "But we'll drop a ton of bricks on your head if you do refuse."
@samirpalepu15883 жыл бұрын
@@sandmand4036 The difference is when it comes to religion, race etc there are things that you CANNOT say, while in this bill it specifies what you HAVE to say. There is a big difference between prohibiting someone to say something and forcing a particular speech.
@ohwellwhateverr3 жыл бұрын
@@sandmand4036 Then you don’t understand the bill and its repercussions. It would establish compelled speech, and therefore set a precedent in the free west that we most definitely do not want. Please do your research next time before willingly handing over your rights and freedom.
