THANK YOU! I am an English tutor and one of my students had copied and pasted a citation and it wasn't gray background, it was maroon! We had already tried the first two tricks and I was totally stumped as to how to get rid of it, short of retyping the text. The Ctrl + Space worked perfectly! I was so excited to learn (and teach) something new.

The third idea worked for me. It was an entire page of shaded writing - 6 paragraphs worth, and the third suggestion saved me from retyping the entire thing.

A white box just happened to show up around my text when copying and pasting from one word document to another in word as I am typing my Thesis. The Control space combination worked on my Mac with Microsoft Word. Thank you and I am grateful for your assistance.

Thank you!!! That worked for me as well... The first two tricks have never worked for me, actually. I used to paste everything into Notepad and only THEN, Word. Another thing you can do is cut the text from your file and then repaste it but choose "text only" in the Options. OR, even easier, when pasting from the website, choose "text only" right away, so instead of doing "Ctrl" + "V", you right-click and choose "paste text only" (without formatting).

Normally, if you right-click and look under pasting options, you can choose "KeepText Only" or "Merge Formatting" it will only paste the text and not the grayish background. You may need to add back italics and bold back onto the text.

Thanks for sharing Professor Allen. I discovered another way to get rid of the gray shading by copying the text and then right-clicking on my mouse to paste it as plain text.

Wonderful. Finally your solution (3) works. I add my Hosanna's and gratias to the list below. I also found out that the ctrl spacebar executes the clear all font formatting command. MS now supplies that function on the menu bar on the top right of the FONTs section of the ribbon. Its a character with an eraser next to it. Thanks again.

If you are on google docs try highlighting it all and then clicking Format > Paragraph Styles> Boarders and Shading> Background color. Then change it from grey to white
