While Luca is coming of age in my opinion it carries alot of messages. One of those being the balancing of relationship influences and understanding the negative and positive qualities of your friends so that you both benifit and minimize overstepping boundaries. Understanding that some relationships are seasonal in your life. For example in Luca and Albertos friendship, Alberto's over confident attitude, one tracked mindset, and intuitive personality was great for motivated Luca to be explorative, self assured, and goal oriented. However it also when pushed too far became pushy, narrowminded, and illogical towards his friend. In the end Luca and Alberto got alot from their friendship as they became more self aware of this balance. In my opinion this part of the movie was stronger and got more focus than the coming of age kid vs parent part(which became more of a B plot).

Pixar has been boring and repetitive for a long LONG time. They use the same template for nearly their entire film catalog. Cute character gets lost and then has to find their way back home. The majority of even their "golden era" of films used this exact same story. I don't think they're even capable to making a different story at this point.

bopper this video was eye opening !!! I've felt the Pixar stagnation??? But i never had the brainpower to connect the dots and define WHAT the problem was. I especially felt the need for "family good" and "coming of age" in Encanto when exploring the other family members' conflicts was dropped to making sure everyone got along. Anyways YOOOO this slapped and I will giddily watch every movie analysis video you make. I cant stop thinking about how its like the same plot every movie my mind is reeling you've opened my eyes but at what cost

I really enjoyed the video; I think Soul and Coco are very strong films, despite falling into these traps, but your points shone through to me about a lot of the films I feel ambivalent towards. However, there was one point of sharp disagreement: I thoroughly enjoyed Encanto! It may have the same tired family matters themes, but like Ratatouille (one of my favorite films) it both has a completely different structure from the majority and ties other themes well to the main narrative. Something almost all of these other films have in common - Pixar's greats often included - is that they are adventure plots. Encanto being solely focused on the family with a bottle episode type location means the themes are able to be explored more deeply than they typically would. You get more specific looks into more characters' perspectives, and in my opinion each of them compliments the story well, exploring their own related sub-themes. It's also up there with Moana for my favorite music in a post-2000 Disney film so.... credit to Lin Manuel Miranda, that might've helped my perception of the movie. (I'd love to see you talk about the film and why it didn't work for you)

I don't think enough people give credit to Ratatouille as a film that comments on how difficult it can be to succeed in a field when you come from an Othered background. Remy's identity as a mouse restricts him from the kitchen, to the point that the only way he's even allowed to participate is by puppeteering a more acceptable individual and letting him take all the credit. Remy's father cautions him against attempting to break into the human world by showing him a vending machine full of the bodies of rats caught and killed in traps. Remy fears that his family and peers don't understand the reality of their situation - that they are living a lower quality of life than humans, and that their own sense of fear is holding them back. I just think there's a lot more in that than a coming-of-age narrative.

There's also commentary on art criticism, whether genius is a matter of nature or nurture, and coming to terms with your own inherent limitations. There's A LOT more to Ratatouille than coming of age, really.

Aww man there goes the negative filter! I agree with a lot of the points brought up, although I personally would chalk up the unmemorability of these modern films to samey and generic characters as well as flanderized returning characters. No character in modern Pixar films ever act in a way you don't expect, they are simply not complex enough to do such a thing.

When it came to the sequels, I think it worked with Toy Story 3 the most because they were focused on telling a story with amazing animation in that movie. It also felt like a great finale to not just Toy Story but also Pixar in general, although I am glad for the existence of Inside Out, Coco, Soul and Toy Story 4 to an extent. It was when Cars 2 was made that these sequels started feeling like cash grabs. Then they made other sequels that just don’t come close to their original films as well as mediocre films like Brave and The Good Dinosaur.

Came for the Fire Emblem, stayed for the professor. Over the past year or two (I've forgotten the exact length of time) you've been branching out beyond just your RE's and FE's into other topics and, honestly even though I'm not super big on movies and especially pixar for basically the same reasons you brought up ('cept I'm a little too young to "remember" pixar/disney in its hayday), I really enjoyed the structure and points brought up in this video. Moana for me still remains my favourite movie made by disney for various, mostly cultural reasons (not religious in any way, but I love the maori/polynesian culture) but it also felt somewhat refreshing even though it still maintained a couple of tropes, most other movies made by them in recent years do seem to fall a bit flat. Other heavily cultural movies such as coco and encanto fell into pitfalls that I think moana doesn't and encanto in particular felt rushed but that's kind of just what the business needed to do in order to continue the chain of consumerism that the human mind has been conditioned to absorb, I guess. Great work as always, professor, I jump at the opportunity to watch your essays even if, like this one, it's on a topic I don't really care about.

The issue I have with Encanto is the horrible pacing. Everything happens *so quickly* , it doesn't give you any respite to actually assimilate what's happening. Luisa's nervous? Boom. Luisa tells us her deepest insecurities after one song. Mirabel must hug Isabela? How could that possibly happen, they hate each other. Boom. They hug after one song. Abuela and Mirabel have a horrible fight that culminates with the house collapsing? Boom. They make up after one song.

I wish they changed the visual style from movie to movie again, for example bugs life, toystory, wall-e, Monster inc, cars and the incredibles all have wildly different styles and Main characters. Unfortunately each new Pixar movie is just about a round face person and a coming of age, there's no mystery, no "what will they do next". I remember when I was younger, every time they announced a new Pixar films it was like a "Whaaaaat This ones about robots yooooooo" but with elemental coming out soon after inside out and soul it doesn't look unique at all, you could grab screenshots of each of these films and the average person would think its the same thing.

Late to the video but im glad someone put it into words. All these cgi movies look the same and kinda just happen. Plus as someone with a background that was more composed of mother gothels than anything else, niche as it is, the vibe of Pixar movies and even Disney movies since about 2017 ish have left me feeling kinda...gross. Stories about forgiveness and sibling bickering or whatever are fine, but with movies like Coco and Encanto (I'm not trying to single out the two big Spanish flavored movies I swear), their families treat the main characters so badly I yell at the screen for them to run off and join a shonen adventure for their own health. It doesn't help that most young people I know/encounter have more mother gothels than Ms. Ketchums, with like maybe one or two exceptions, so if it wasn't for the availability of info these days I would worry about kids seeing these 'family is everything no matter what they do to you' stories. Doubly ironic to me is how this era of movies is all post Frozen, Tangled, and Brave, which do incredible discussions of unsettling if not outright traumatic and definitely atypical family situations. But that's just my hyperfocus I guess lol, I was always a found family kinda person.

I never cared whether the twist was predictable, all I wanted was a nice story about something important to us all, and that is what Coco is about. Predictability is a real problem if the stories are bad. At the same time though, subverting expectations has its limits as well.

I did love Merida, Coco and enjoyed watching Cars 2 (yes, sue me), Luca, Onward and Soul, I still have to wholeheartedly agree with your point! Especially since I also remember very little about Soul despite liking it whilst I watched it. It was also one of those movies where I said to myself “that’s nice! … now I need to never watch it again”. I just think, as you said, most modern Pixar movies just get really repetitive and the style is also kinda boring now and idk… it just doesn’t capture my heart and attention like it used to (except a few exceptions as mentioned above). I once explained to a friend that I don’t think it was a steady decline but more so an up and down that went further and further down until it hit its rock bottom. The moment I noticed personally was with the movie Red (that was Pixar, right?). I thought it was… ok. At best. But it just made me so angry with how generic it was and how much potential was wasted- And yeah: I just agree so much with this video. I wish the originality was back and the heart of it all

I think boring and repetitive regarding the family or coming of age theme is harsh. We can expect Pixar to pump out an easily digestible, yet warm and loving film like Coco, Encanto, Up, Soul, Onward and such. Reliability and repetitiveness is probably not the term that Pixar would want to define themselves as, but in a greater light, you can define it as consistently great and provides a message you want to see when watching that genre of movie. Obviously there's some B lists in Pixars time, which is variable based on the person, but for me like Luca, and C lists like Cars sequels. I agree mostly with your statement of being old, cause we are watching it to get the feels you expect from Pixar, not something else surprising or makes you contemplate the world or the world that the movie is based on.
