Guys, listen! In this video, I state that Van der Waals forces and London Dispersion forces are interchangeable, that's actually incorrect! Dispersion forces are momentary dipole-induced dipole interactions, the weakest, whereas Van der Waals interactions are an umbrella term that includes dispersion forces as well as any other interactions involving dipoles, just not interactions involving formal charges. Sorry, my fault!

when discussing ion-ion interactions, we are referring to the interactions within a lattice of many repeating formula units, so we would call this intermolecular, as there are not really any molecules to speak of.

@Anonymous oh thats the dipole, a sorta interaction(or force) that develops when one of the participating atoms attracts the electrons to itself more than the other atoms This happens when its electronegativity(how much an atom attracts electrons) exceeds the other atoms by a significant amount, thus causing a sort of net force to develop due to the uneven attraction Where, and why(more importantly why not) it occurs in certain molecules over others is already covered in the vid, but i hoped i heloed!(and was right in all that i said)

My textbook say electrical conductivity is ability to conduct electric current due to free electrons with changing composition of the substance. Is this correct the with changing substance part, I hope it's not spelling mistake and actually without 😰

oh, no i would say it's without, metals conduct electricity because electrons are able to flow freely through the network of covalent bonds, so the substance doesn't change its composition, unless one counts the flow of electrons as changing composition. i would think that its without!

Thanks for an amazing video. Just a small suggestion, "heat energy" is not a property. It should be called "thermal energy" instead. Heat is just a transit phenomena which occur at system boundary due to temperature difference.

Professor Dave, I have been loving your videos; thank you. I am a physics teacher and have picked up IB High Level Chemistry so I am having to brush up on a lot of concepts. I have a question about van der Vaals forces. Your video classifies only the London Dispersion forces as van der Waals forces, however, according to my textbook and goldbook.iupac.org/V06597.html, van der Waals also includes permanent dipole-dipole and dipole induced dipole interactions. Is this a common discrepancy of classification?

it's true, i have seen van der waals mentioned as including dipole-dipole interactions of all varieties, whether momentary/induced or permanent, this is not what i was initially taught, but to be safest it may be easy to refer to them as dipole-dipole interactions when the dipole is permanent and dispersion forces when temporary, just to be most specific. sorry for the confusion!

Thanks for another brilliant clearly explained video which taught me a lot. At 6.00 min you say everything is solid at absolute zero. Helium is (predicted) to be liquid at absolute zero (at atmospheric pressure) because of quantum zero point motion. It requires about 25 atmospheres of pressure to force the liquid into the solid phase at absolute zero. For the same reason, monoatomic hydrogen is a gas down to absolute zero.
