You guys! I'm so sorry, I screwed up the equation at 5:30, final velocity should be on the left and initial velocity should be on the right. When written out correctly the arithmetic will work out to the number given, however. Sorry about that!

I'm kinda confused in 2:49 because how did you manage to obtain 4.5s since what I did is (t^2 = 20.4s^2 Don't we just have to square second and time and remove the power so they would be quite equal)??? Since if we didn't square time then it would mean T^2 = 4.5s? which puzzles me.

This is why i love physics its makes your mathematics classes that seem useless and applies them to the real world, to make it feel like all this effort means something, I think that mathematics and physics should be taught as the same class so that the students have an appreciation for the use case of mathematics. Most students that i know never took physics and only Math, and now hate math because the average person is not creative enough to apply mathematics to the real world. That would mean they would have to make these discoveries themselves, that took geniuses to do.

I remember the first time I realised by myself that the equation for time is just a quadratic formula, I was so excited. Really helped in exams being able to write "s=ut + 1/2at^2, so use quadratic formula with t = etc etc" other people would solve for v first and then use v=u+at because it's simpler, but leaves more room for making mistakes and rounding errors

The equation reduces to d = 1/2*a*t^2, since the initial velocity and initial position were zero. Given d = 100 m, a = 9.8 m/s^2 and the 1/2 factor, put them all together, and rearrange so t is the subject of the equation and get: t = sqrt(2*d/a) Plug in the data: t = sqrt(2*100/9.8)

It looks like mr dave accidentally reversed the equation the correct equation is Vf = Vi + at, if we hypothetically used the incorrect equation Vi = Vf + at, we would add 55 to the both side so we can get 65.37 m/s 10 = x - 55 10 + 55 = x - 55 + 55 x= 65

@carultch

It means the same thing as 1/2. It comes straight from the equation. If you are wondering why it exists in the equation, it comes from Calculus. Integrate a constant acceleration relative to time twice, and you get a leading factor of 1/2, and a squaring of the time. A visual interpretation of why this is, is when you graph constant acceleration on a velocity vs time plot, for an object accelerating from rest at a constant rate. The area under the curve is a triangle of height a*t, the base is t, and the area (i.e. the distance associated with this motion) is 1/2*(a*t)*t, or 1/2*a*t^2.

Professor, i got confuse in 2:48 on your video. The equation was (-100m)/4.9m/s^2)=t^2 How come the quotient is 4.5??? When i use the calculator, it wasnt 4.5 but it was 20.408. Reply asap. I think you got it wrong professor in dividing 100 and 4.9😑

I'm just curious. I'm confuse with the question how long is in the object in the air when it was thrown upward at a height of 100m. Is the height from 100m when the object is thrown upward doesn't have to be related when the object is falling down? The total time is the same?
@ProfessorDaveExplains
@ProfessorDaveExplains 2 жыл бұрын
It's displacement, so it takes into account the direction of displacement and the direction of motion. Velocity is positive but acceleration is negative, so the math works out fine.

Right, so there is nowhere near enough information to answer that question. In fact there is literally zero useful information for answering that question! His height is irrelevant, after all.

If you throw the rock directly down rather than dropping it, and you are required to solve for the initial velocity, how would you solve for it given the time and distance only?

d = 1/2*a*t^2 + v0*t + d0 define d0 = 0, as the the object starts at the origin of our coordinate system define the positive direction as downward. Given t and d, and given that this is a free fall situation where a=9.8 m/s^2, our unknown is v0. Solve for v0 d = 1/2*a*t^2 + v0*t d - 1/2*a*t^2 = v0*t v0 = (d - 1/2*a*t^2)/t Plug in a, the known t, and the known d, and you will find v0.

Prof dave, can I ask because the original in your horizontal motion video , the formula is dt = d0 + vi t + 1/2 at2 . WHy in the vertical, it seems d0 is not included?

My prof told me "If the object goes upward, the acceleration due to gravity is negative then Positive if downward" because gravitational pulls downward with the acceleration of constant (9.81m/s).
@ProfessorDaveExplains

Acceleration due to gravity is always negative. It pulls in the negative direction.

Hey, guys, here's another way to find the answer to height. h=1/2(g)(t^2) h=(1/2)(9.81)(t^2) The gravity should ALWAYS be positive though.. It still works!

@ProfessorDaveExplains, If gravity is a force, why is it included in kinematics?
@carultch
@carultch 3 жыл бұрын
Because it is a "coincidence" that the force of gravity per unit mass on all objects on this planet is approximately the same everywhere on this surface. Such that when gravity is the only force, all objects accelerate at the same rate when in free fall or projectile motion. I put the word "coincidence" in quotes, because there is a lot more to it than just a coincidence, and you learn it eventually when you study general relativity, why it is the case that gravitational mass and inertial mass are a package deal.

This is awesome! I love your clear explanations, but i'm having trouble getting the 2 numbers you got when you put you a,b and c values in the quadratic equation. I keep trying, and plugging them into my calculator but it keeps saying error. Do I need a specific sort of program installed in my calculator for quadratic equations or is it just and error i'm making while plugging in my numbers? Thanks!
