Well, this is weird. What are all these squiggles? Those peaks represent the wavelengths of infrared light that don't get to the detector, because there's some functional group in the sample absorbing them. Professor Dave busts out some dance moves in this one. Do the symmetric stretch!

It's 12:36am and I have my chem final at 9 tomorrow morning and I'd been flipping through my textbook and noticed IR spectroscopy, which I've never seen before, but which definitely will be on the final...so I'd just like to take this time to thank you for saving me about an hour of trying to understand this just from a textbook. Thanks for saving me time and energy!

A carbonyl group is C double bonded to O right? The functional group you identified on the right of the whiteboard is an sp2 C-H, which has a significantly different frequency (3050-3150) than carbonyl (1620-1680), which your drew in the spectra. I'm a little confused why you drew the carbonyl frequency in the spectra but identified it's functional group as a sp2 C-H instead?

This is extremely well explained! One question: I assume these molecules are vibrating at a rate which just happens to coincide with the wave frequency in various parts of the infrared spectrum. Is this true, or are these molecules sped up or slow down somehow so they Will affect wave lengths in the infrared spectrum?
