I know you probably left this out to simplify things but: *word ending in -IONE are always feminine *shorten words such as: Auto (automobile) Cinema (cinematografo) Bici (bicicletta) Radio (radiofonia) etc etc will use the gender of their long not shorten form *wods ending in -MA of Greek origin will be masculine *word ending in -ORE are masculine *foreign words such as computer, stereo etc will be masculine there are more cases and more exceptions words that will be one gender in the singular and change gender in the plural etc ......but i figured i would leave this here for general knowledge

Hi, I'm Italian and I can assure you that the first one is wrong.
@TheChasom

@@TheVentu17 since I am Italian as well and also a professor of Italian language, let's get technical.... There are ione nouns and ione that are create by using the ione suffix on verbs (descrivere descrizione) while you are technically correct, the number of - ione nouns in Italian that are masculine are but a handful, I myself can only think of 3 or 4 ex scorpio e vs a list of hundreds of words derived from verbs + sufdix. For some one learning Italian as an L2 it is a common semplificato/shorcut to use as an aid in learning gender for a whole set of word all at once (having to learn a dozen or so "exception" Vs dozens and dozens of words)
@TheVentu17
@TheVentu17 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheChasom All clear, it was just a clarification. Exceptions exist everywhere and yes, I understand that it is not healthy starting from them, considering also the rarest ones. Thank you for the explanation professore!

Just when you think it can't get more confusing for English people, the Italian word for 'hand' is feminine even though it ends in 'o' and has the word 'man' in it 🥴
@terra_727
@terra_727 2 жыл бұрын
And just when you couldn't even get more confusing on top of that, some words completely change gender whether or not it's singular or plural... Il lenzuolo -> le lenzuola L'osso -> le ossa Il muro -> le mura

It is interesting to note that in French the gender of some items is the opposite than in Italian!

German is a Germanic language, like is English, but German and Italian both have genders in words.

Gender adds a lot of extra learning, and verb conjugation add a lot of words to Italian, as compared to English. I hope you can explain why there are three different versions of the word "the" in Italian.
@ProfessorDaveExplains

that's just how it is! it's true that there are aspects of english that are way simpler. but english also has so many bizarre rules and exceptions regarding phonetics that make it extremely difficult to learn as a second language so it's a trade off.

Gender, in language, is not the same as sex. Masculine and feminine are not the same as male and female.

I know, I'm just making light of the confusion experienced by an English speaker, as gender in language does not exist for us.

Hey Prof. Dave, Why is radio considered feminine ?

Professor Dave Explains yeah I’m curious because in Spanish "El radio" is the radio apparatus and "la radio" is the medium... the broadcasting system. Is that distinction also present in Italian? ( I’m not familiar with the Italian language at all)

It's short for "radiofonia", or transmission of sound by radio waves. The final -a makes it feminine. :)

If it’s a feminine word ending in o or e then how does it qualify as feminine?
@ilariabozzetti1724
@ilariabozzetti1724 4 жыл бұрын
There is no particular reason...since it is feminine you will need to decline article adjective and verb associated to that word as feminine: La bella mano è stata ferita = the beautiful hand has been wounded. As you can see, despite MANO ending with O, all related parts of the sentence are ending with A, 'cos it's feminine.
