Adam, I wanted to thank you for your content, your show is lots of fun and you've got many keen insights into the songs and artists of our times. I'm replying on this particular story because I WAS THERE! I was a teenager in High School and I was there when they recorded Live at the Filmore East! It was EPIC! We went to the second show and it was so amazing! I don't recall who the warm up was, but when they started they just didn't stop! They played Whippin' Post for almost an hour! The energy was infectious, the whole place was lit up with excitement as we passed, you know, from person to person down the rows! We didn't know they were recording a LIVE Album. We entered the Filmore at about 11:00pm and we were let out after 5:30am! It was light out when we came stumbling out of the building! WOW! What an experience! Incidentally, several years later I worked as a Psychiatric Nursing Supervisor in a Private Psychiatric Hospital in Connecticut, which catered to Show Business, wealthy people, and top Executives. We worked with quite a few very famous celebrities, which of course I'm not allowed to divulge. But they know they were there! Visitors such as Meryl Streep and Dickie Betts were some I met, and since they were not my patients I can tell you at least that much!

My cool Allman Brothers story, they were playing 2 nights in Detroit and I had a ticket for the first show. Unfortunately I was out of town with my dad for his business and got back that night. The next night I went down and knocked on the side door where the tour bus was parked, and their manager opened the door. I told him my story of woe, and he let me in and said don’t make me regret it. I told him I wouldn’t. That was in 90, I believe.

Actually, Gregg did attend the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame ceremony. He regretted that all he did was thank his brother Duane in one very simple sentence. He realized at that point that he really wasted an opportunity would never come by again. I’ve actually been to The Big House and Rosehill Cemetery twice. The first time I went was just after Gregg died and about two days before he was to be buried. My second visit was just this past September. If you are a fan of The Allman Brothers Band, it is worth stopping by. There was nothing quite like an Allman Brothers band concert! The band members were just one by one and pick up their instruments. Gregg would then count them into the first song, which ideally was Dont Want You No More/ It’s Not My Cross To Bear. I always thought that was one of the greatest concert openers ever!

"Midnight Rider" was one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar. My teacher from 1995 to 2001, Steve Bernstein, showed it to me. My favorite performance of it is from the Allman Brothers Band's 3-song set during the Concert for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame near the beginning of that stretch of time. The lineup was Greg, Dicky, Butch, Alan Woody (all sorely missed), Jamioe, Warren Haynes, Marc Quiṅones and Sheryl Crow guest singing on "Midnight Rider". It sounded fantastic on video, even though later reports were that Greg had no memory of being at that concert or performing. That's tragic to imagine, considering he seemed altogether present and in control.

Yeah, that song was a deal closer. I heard the Allman Bros but never really listened. My older brother usually was in the moment of all the great bands. I being still preteen mixed my love of music with playing in the neighborhood. Midnight Rider obviously was great with a solid hook. Idlewild set me on a lifetime of great enjoyment with the Allman Bros music. It just got better and better, even after the devastating loses of the two GREAT members. Duane and Berry. I did lose interest a little during the later years of 70/80s. BUT,...in the 90s they totally redeemed with Where it all Begins. I was really happy to hear that familiar sound with such authenticity. A true comeback few achieve. Gregg, is one of my favorite voices in all music. The world is less without them all. But they all live on in my FLAC library and on my turntable and tv. Like this very much and have usually loved the Allman Bros since I first became enraptured in 1971. Who would give you a hard time about the Allmans!? As Classic Rock as it gets, with so much blues rock, genuine, and a jazz feel too. Q: Who created the guitar hook in Midnight Rider? To me it has seemed like Dickie, with a melodicness reminding me of "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" -- the less long version being also on Idlewild South. And now I see what Idlewild South the setting was/is! Thanks Profesor.

Great tribute, Professor! ABB is my favorite band of all time, British or American. Their peak output was cut short because of tragedy, but what a peak it was. IMO, their greatness was unparalleled, and the Fillmore album is a testament to that. When I saw the thumbnail to this video, I thought you might be referring to "The Outlaws". There is a very sad, poignant story revolving around the lyrics to Green Grass and High Tides. The story goes, they were written by an individual who was "associated" with the band but never given proper credit. I think there may be enough for one of your "deep dives"!

If you ever get a chance to go to Macon Ga, go to the Big House, The Allman Brothers museum. Would love to hear a story on the 80’s “The Gregg Allman Band” fantastic records.

My favorite band! Their musicianship was always amazing. Please do more shows on them as there are tons of stories to tell. Screw the haters, they're obviously ignorant.

As a nightowl, Midnight Rider has always been a favorite. I even wrote a parody: Midnight Writer.

I saw ABB in Greenwich Village, NY three months before the first album was released, Steppenwolf was the headliner, but we all kept yelling for ABB to do another encore. I've been a lifelong fan.

They used to play almost every 4th of July in the 90s here in NC. I went everytime. Always a great show.

I loved all those 70's albums, but the lives they put out were the best...capturing all the memories of the shows I was lucky to see myself...Fillmore East was my favorite show ever put on disc...great concert, and great music...

Everytime I hear Allman Brothers, I think of the old SNL skit, Ackroyd as Jimmy Carter talking down a radio listener on acid by asking him, Do you have any Allman Brothers?

Aykroyd. I remember that.

One of my cousins competed in a battle of the bands in Macon, Ga before the Allman Bros became famous. My cousin's band lost to them that day because the drummer never stopped after the band got thru singing. My cousin lives in Mauk, Ga.

i didn’t start appreciating the Allman Brothers well into my 40’s. i regret not really listening to them earlier. Their song Melissa is a masterpiece.

The song is phenomenal. It was popular back when I was dating my first love. We used to go to a club called The Holiday House in Tampa, FL. The house band was The Moles. They were mostly an Allman Brothers cover band and played the ABB well. After leaving the club, we'd go to my boyfriend's house and watch SNL and Midnight Special on TV. Those were the days!

I have always loved this song. I was only 10 when this song came out and it had a tremendous effect on me. RIP Gregg.
