Phil Collins never considers this song as anything more than a B-side until a movie director wanted it for his 1984 film called Against All Odds. So Phil rewrote it and released it as Against All Odds (Take a Look At Me Now) to amazing fanfare including an Oscar nomination and a Grammy win. One of the most heart wrenching songs of the decade.

It’s Time for another episode of our series the new standards where we break down a song that has transcended fads, genres and chart positions to become a mainstay in the great world songbook. Today’s is a heart wrenching ballad that went all the way to #1 though it was a darkhorse to even be released. .
When Phil Collins was approached to write the title song for the 1984 film Against All Odds, he actually already had it... albeit in a preliminary, “rough cut” form. Originally titled “How Can You Sit There?”, Collins’ Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) was written in 1979 during the formative sessions for his debut solo album Face Value. However, Collin’s did care for it and it fell by the wayside.
In fact, Collins completely ignored it when he was putting together his album... calling a B-side in the best-case scenario. A year later when Collins was recording his second solo effort “Hello, I Must Be Going!” Against All Odds was passed over again. Nor was it considered for any of the three contemporary Genesis albums at the time... Duke in 80, Abacab in 81, and Genesis in 83. In Phil’s mind the song was mediocre... just a throwaway track.
However, this obscure demo would be resurrected from the trash heap when Taylor Hackford came knocking on Collins’ door in December 1982. Hackford, a film director, was just coming off shooting “An Officer and A Gentleman.” It was a massive success and he wanted to keep the ball rolling with his next movie, Against All Odds... Dubbed a romantic neo-noir thriller about an aging football star hired by a mob, it was actually a modern update of 1947’s Out of the Past.
When Taylor Hackford signed with Atlantic Records, he was given a roster of artists to choose from for the film’s theme song. But as it turned out, Collins was really the only one Hackford was even considering. So, he tracked Collins down in Chicago, where he was on tour, and asked him to write him a song for the movie.
Collins, however, didn’t think he had the time. But Hackford was undaunted, and he showed Phil a cut of the film on the VCR in his hotel room. After watching it, something clicked in Phil’s head. He remembered that he had this old, unfinished song called How Can You Just Sit There. Maybe that could work.
After their meeting in Chicago, Collins started putting together a proper recording of the song. He teamed up with producer Arif Mardin who oversaw the piano parts and orchestration. Those were recorded in New York at RCA Studios. Mardin would then connect with Collins in LA to record the drums and coax out some of the most emotionally raw vocals of Phil’s career.

Solo: "Against All Odds" and I've thought that for a couple decades, now. As for Genesis, my most favorite song by them is "The Living Years". I've loved that song for decades and it motivated me to have a strong relationship with my pops so that I didn't live the rest of my life in regret, once my dad was no longer around. I lost him in May 2018, so the song has an even more personal connection now. I miss him and his hugs

I can remember the girls where I worked when this song came on the radio would start to sing along and swoon a bit. Perfect snapshot of the 80s: girls with their frizzy hair, leg warmers and shoulder pads - and Phil Collins. Didn't realize it back then but I was living in a John Hughes film.

I, too, was in tears listening to the story about you and this song and your dad. I remember I was in my room at my mom's house, after my wife had left I moved in with my mom, and was recording a CD for my wife, and of course, this song was on it. Mom heard me playing guitar and singing and came in my room. We had the conversation like you had with your dad. MANY tears that night. But mom was right. My wife had moved on and it was time for me to do the same. This was before the divorce but gave me a new perspective on things. I am happy to say that even before the divorce was final a year later we really became great friends. Our lawyers would ask us why we were getting divorced as they would hear us talking about going to lunch after the court dates and such. I had come to terms with we simply wanted different things in life at that point and no reason we couldn't be the great friends we had been when we met. And to this day, we are. That was 12 years ago. This song is still one of my favorites as is everything that Phil ever recorded. I got my 3rd degree after the divorce (this one in Culinary) and am an executive chef and a drummer. My cooking and playing has taken me all over the world. Something I would not have ever done when married. My ex says her leaving was the best thing that ever happened to me. She is right. As always. LOL And like you and millions of others...the best was yet to come after the pain!!! Sometimes, against all odds is exactly what we need!

To be one of three artists to hit 100 million albums for both solo and in a band is just amazing. What we all forget is that it took a loss to create a moment. Hands down my favorite artist ever. I’ve tried numerous times to go see him live. But every time something happened and I couldn’t go. I regret not taking that leap and just going. Phil Collins and Sade have been my background music to inspiration for writing over half of my poems over the years. The beauty of it is his son is now playing drums in his band. Thank you very much for doing this video.

I remember the look in my hobby’s eyes one day when I was still dressed up from work..I looked kinda hot, and it showed in how he was staring at me! Wow…thanks for letting me remember that time! Phil Collins is a genius! He does good stand up comedy too. Went to one of his concerts on a "dark and stormy night" and the power went out. The whole arena was black, not Mammoth Cave dark, but stay in your seat dark. The A\C was out, the place, jammed with people, was getting hot and humid, people were getting restless, when a single spot came on and Phil Collins walked out and proceeded to share jokes and stories until the auxiliary power came on. He owned us all after that! And the concert was amazing!

Oh wow, I was just reminiscing with some friends about this song over Thanksgiving break. My senior year in high school I had a crush on a young lady (asked her to homecoming but she got sick and couldn't go) and I just knew this was going to be our song. Shortly after she moved away before we could go out. Our paths crossed two more times in the next 5 years, but both times things conspired to prevent us from going on that first date, the first time I was leaving for college, the second time I was leaving for Desert Storm. She will always be the one that got away and even though she doesn't know it this will always be our song. Keep up the great work Professor.

Halladay 1. Thanks again for your service to our great nation! 2. What a rough pill for you to swallow man, uggh.. im sorry it didn't work out for you and your high school friend. I recently dated someone who had a good friend in high school that she also wanted to date, but for different reasons never actually did. So it's a similar situation to yours. I was good friends with a girl in elementary school with a girl at 11 was willing to lol 😆 give myself up for but my family moved out of state and we wrote each other for awhile ( wrote, lol yes I said it the old fashioned way). She went on to be a cheerleader and she earned herself a college scholarship to University of Minnesota while we were in high school and it made me very happy to see her blossoming into this young woman I really believed she would be to begin with, after all I spent a lot of time with her and had her basic makeup already figured out. I knew she make a great girlfriend and I was really distressed over the fact I couldn't be the guy who had a chance to win her love. She's an amazing person and would have made a great wife, and as I hear this song now, which was very popular when we were spending the time together ❤, she comes to the front of mind, thinking about the what ifs?.. and the last time that I turned around and left her side 😞 feeling a huge sense of loss

When I was in University 10 years ago one of my classmates used this song as the score for an assignment during our Basic Filmmaking class. The resulting short film didn't completely work, but as I listened to the song, I realized what emotions my classmate wanted his audience to feel. I also understood how this track could resonate with listeners.

There’s nothing I can add to your accolades to Mr. Collins. You’re spot on and your words are perfect. Thank you, I was a teenager of the 80s who had the pleasure of Phil, Pete, Mike, and Genesis imprinted on my psyche. It was a wonderful time to be a teen. The quick wink and nod to his friend Peter at 23:09 is fantastic! I love the story about your Dad. What a great parent! 🙋🏻‍♀️

Phil Collins is one of my favorites. I am a fan of Genesis and Phil's solo work. So many great songs. I read about how he wrote this song after the break up of his first marriage in Phil's memoir 'Not Dead Yet". Phil Collins sure experienced alot of heartbreak in his life. He performed this song at Live Aid in 1985. He stated in his book, It was the mistake heard around the world". He played a wrong note on the piano. If you watch the performance on KZbin, you will see the disappointment on his face. He is a perfectionist.

No one can sing it like Phil. Hearing others sing it, it’s like they missed the point, contrived emotions and murderous tempos make me want to break out the original and play it loud. I loved Phil Collins in high school. Wish I could have seen him in concert. After crying for three days straight from my first heartbreak, I consoled myself with Against the Odds, it was the catharsis I needed in a dark time.

Great '80s song and great Phil Collins song and story as well! Phil also had a more serious and introspective side he displayed on his ...But Seriously album with songs like "Do You Remember" and "I Wish It Would Rain Down" and later on Both Sides in 1993 with the title track, which was more of the socially conscious side of Phil (also displayed on "Another Day in Paradise"). Just some random thoughts on Mr. Collins.

Love the song. Love the movie, all these years later. They both struck me so emotionally even though I was in a good relationship at the time they came out. Later when that relationship ended l couldn't hear the song without crying, once in the grocery store, and l felt really embarrassed. Phil has always been one of my favorites, and the emotion he pours out in this song and a lot of others is one of the reasons why.

Phil Collins is by far my favorite artist of all time. From the beginning with Genesis and through all of his solo work. He's been in the game for over 50 years now and still touring. I was never financially able to go see him live until just last week. I traveled across the US to see Genesis in Ohio. Although it is sad to see him in such debilitating health, I feel like part of that he did for us. His injuries are related to all those years playing drums and touring among other things. I felt like it was my duty in a way to say my thanks to him in my own small way. Not only to see a fantastic concert but to pay homage to the man who has meant so much to my life. I wouldn't be the person I am today without the incredible music he has helped to create over the years. His 80's and 90's music holds a special place in my heart though. I grew up into the man I am today in those years. Phil has always been just Phil in all his music. No pretentions, just Phil. Although you will never see this, thank you Phil for all you mean to me.

Your interpretations, along with stories from the original artist's, always seem to add SO MUCH to the songs you review. I am truly a fan of your work. I've commented before about how proud your Dad was of you and that his legacy lives on, through you. Keep us anticipating for your next take on your future video's! I met Phil when he was touring with Eric Clapton.I was working with local crew. I was there for sound check and I went to see if anyone was around and Eric Clapton walks buy on his way to his dressing room. I asked him if he would sign my pass and he says"Haven't got time for that. Then, someone taps me on the shoulder and this voice behind me goes "I'll sign your pass", and it was Phil. Real nice guy, we chatted for about 30 minutes as I was a fan of his since the Genesis days.

I grew up with undiagnosed & unrecognized clinical depression and I was in my middle teens when this song was released. The lyrics and emotion of the song helped me express and process that depression subconsciously before I could identify or realize what it was. Looking back, it was the MOST IMPORTANT of a handful of songs in my life that enabled me to will myself forward in life. Eventually, I found the professional assistance that I needed all along. While I have had many "favorite" songs of the moment in my life, there is only one G.O.A.T. for me: Phil Collins's Against All Odds. Thank you, Professor, for adding the additional context of its origins to externally validate all those teenage emotions this song evoked within my psyche. Keep up the Great Work!

In 1979 I was working as a t-boy at Trident Studios in London. Phil Collins was in the studio laying down some drum tracks for Dave Greensalde’s album Pentateuch of the Cosmology, During breaks in sessions Phil would go down to the main studio and play the famous Bechstein piano (used on early Bowie, Queen and Elton John albums) and play some tracks he was working on at the time. One of these was “The Roof is Leaking” of his first solo album and amongst others the start of Against all Odds. Also whilst he was touring his wife went off with the “decorator” working on his house.
