I really felt what you said about telling artists what their music meant to you. I saw Brad Delp singing with a Beatles cover group in Massachusetts and after the show I wanted to thank him for all the great music over the years. He was busy talking to someone else so I didnt and shortly after, he was gone. So in that, I want to say Thank You to you Professor for what you give us every day!! Thank You!!

I remember this song being on repeat on my local top 40 radio station in WV. The song huge and the video was so great. GM looked so good. You knew he was going to a gigantic star. What is so amazing about you Adam, you meet and talk, not interview, with these amazing artists, you stay focussed on the music and the song. Such that these great historical artists come off like regular guys and gals sitting on a couch talking about that which they love. Cant get that with most so called entertainment journalists. So, kudos to you Adam, you really are the Professor of Rock.

I remember enjoying this song long before I realized that I knew both of the persons singing it. George and Aretha definitely worked well together. Have you already done a retrospective on the Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton duet "Islands in a Stream", Adam? If not, not only would that make a killer upload, but it would be great if you could somehow get an interview with Barry Gibb.

It's a fantastic song and a wonderful part of Aretha's 'comeback' to the charts. I never really gelled with George's solo output but there's no denying that he had an excellent voice and it was a great idea to match him with Aretha. I just get so excited when you do a George Michael themed video, Adam! He deserved to be much more respected in the USA considering his Christmas hit is one of the top 10 most played every year for the past 30 years, Careless Whisper, Father Figure, Freedom 90, and Faith (whole album LOL) are heavily played still. And like you said, Freedom by Wham! is a Motown song - my old boss at McDonald's STAN use to dance like a Motown star to it - so you brought back such warm memories, love ya man, please do as many George videos as you can. I loved the last one about Lita & Ozzy, and my goodness, this duet between Aretha & George is fresh still, and love that video opening they did!

I remember this song so well when it was first unleashed. I was already digging the triumphant resurgence of Aretha, but I hadn't really paid that much attention to George Michael- Wham! was never one of my favorites (then). Narada's genius production and the sheer raw talent of both created not only one of THE definitive duets of the 80's, but it also opened my eyes wide to the amazing talent that was George Michael. In essence, it prepared me for the brilliance that was "Faith". Michael HAS to know how much we appreciate and love his body of work, and the man that he was. Another brilliant interview, Professor!

Re: George Michael's self doubt There is a video out there of several great artists all practicing for one of the great fund raisers. Bowie is smoking, leaning up against the wall backstage, and Michael blows out a song. Everyone looks at each other like "what did we just hear?" Bowie come off the wall with the biggest, most appreciative smile. I wonder how great a demon Michael must have been fighting that the praise of several Greats could not subdue it.

What a classic. The "Aretha" album from 1986 was sort of slipping through the cracks until they released this song as the third single. However, there are lots of other great songs in there. "Jimmy Lee" was a superb R&B jam that should have crossed over to the pop charts, "Do You Still Remember" is a missed opportunity at the AC charts, and "He'll Come Along" is vintage Aretha all the way.

***"YOU KNEW WE WERE WAITING.." (FOR PROF.), & GEORGIE & 'REE EARN THEIR 80's CROWNS...** ....Well, Prof., you got a LIVE One, in Narada!! ...ha-HAA!! ...Dudes' a natural born STORYTELLER! ....I'm in AMAZEMENT that you still 'educate' me, even when I thought I knew most, than others....had NO IDEA, this tune was originally for Tina Turner! (CONT.) ....I've read that Aretha's 'people' put a bit O' fear in Georgie, as to not 'oversing' on her, but SHE was the One throwin' punches! (10:10)...ha-HAA! ...Well, we're left with The Queen of Soul becoming Queen Of POP, and Georgie becoming Blue-eyed Soul Boy #1, for GOOD....and, SPEAKING of #1, April, 1987.... 10. I Just Died In Your Arms (Tonight) - Cutting Crew 9. Come Go With Me - Expose (...where's THEIR post, Prof.!?) 8. The Finer Things - WINWOOD 7. Lean On Me - Club Nouveau 6. Looking For A New Love - MISS Jody Watley 5. Midnight Blue - Lou Gramm 4. Sign "O" The Times - Prince (...this tune needs a 'revelation', Prof. ...) 3. Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House 2. Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now - Starship 1. ***I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)*** - Aretha & George (1st week of 2 wks.) ...AND, trivia tidbit; "I Knew..." apparently was the VERY first 'promo CD Single' handed to Radio DJ's (with various edits) for Radio play....that I'm a PROUD Owner of (..had 3, sold One).... MAN, Spring '87 was NOT complete without this tune!! ...GREAT POST, Prof., keep ROCKIN'...and, SOULIN'!! ...ha-HAAA!

I still remember hearing George telling of how when Aretha was recording this song with him in the studio, she would be eating fried chicken and throwing the bones into a bin at the other end of the room .. Apparently she was even more accurate with her aim than she was with hitting high notes .. She never missed ! 🤣

It’s hard to overstate just how massive George Michael was in the UK already, by that time. He’d already branched out and done Careless Whisper (a solo song that he gave Andrew Ridgeley co-writing credits on, just because that’s what George Michael was, a very generous man). So yeah, in the UK it was very much George Michael with Aretha Franklin at the time. And time has been kind to George’s solo stuff, he wrote two or three outstanding albums, and I wasn’t a fan, but Faith and Listen Without Prejudice were incredible. The first time this song was played on Radio One (the UK’s by far biggest radio station at the time), they played it twice, back to back.

I wouldn’t call George Michael exactly a rookie, he had been in the music business for about a decade by the time he started working with Aretha. But Aretha obviously is a veteran

My comment is about Narada Michael Walden. A HUGE favorite of mine, which Walden wrote, but wasn't nearly as big of a hit as "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)," I think is worthy of mention. That song is "Someone That I Used To Love" by Natalie Cole (#21 in 1980). It is such a personal favorite of mine, and I definitely can relate to it. Take a listen, see if you agree. ☺

My mistrake LOL. Michael Masser wrote the song, but he is definitely in the same league as Narada Michael Walden.

Hey Adam, not too much time today, BUT, great interview! True words of wisdom every preformer should live by- don't judge yourself. Anyhow, this thought actually hit me the other day when you did the piece on Fleetwood Mac. Have you done a show on Stevie Nicks/Don Henley's Leather and Lace?? THAT would be awesome! If it has been done already, I apologize... and I'll definitely go and watch it(in fact, I'm gonna do a quick search when I finish here). As always, thank you, and much love brother, peace!
