I was 5 yrs old when my dad came home with a 45 of Eight Days a Week. I still have it to this day! In 1976 my dad dropped me & a friend off to a WIngs Over America concert that I went to in Denver. He stayed in the car the whole concert waiting for me to return. The bonds created between a dad & his children are incredible to an extent stronger after they're gone. My wife and I saw Paul together back in 2009 and sang along with all the na, na, na's. Singing that classic along with the Beatle that wrote it was pretty special. His ability to write catchy melodies was uncanny. A lot of artists blow their melody-invention load after a year or two. By the time he wrote the timeless melody of Hey Jude he'd already written Yesterday, Michelle, For No One, Your Mother Should Know, I'll Follow The Sun and countless other beautiful catchy melodies. A genius.

I love the line and believe the story and that john was honest in his appraisal of it. but a little part of me wishes that john thought the line sucked but told paul to leave it in to undermine his success. Paul McCartney is a beast when it comes to songwriting, musicianship, and vocals. - - His vocal versatility might be why his vocals are underrated. Many don't realize he's the same singer on most of his hits. Lennon on the other hand, has such a unique tone, that he's instantly recognizable.

If you listen to the album, me and Dave were the loudest...... It was emotional because it was during the tour where he played Beatle songs for the first time since the split, including a few of Johns' songs as a tribute to his friend. The day included Page and Plant onstage together for the first time since John Bonham died, Elton Johns' first sober UK gig, Clapton, Floyd, etc etc... but singing along with Paul is the bit I really remember.

I had the 45 and I remember that a lot of times way back in the day when my parents would play euchre with my aunt and uncle, at some point he would call me over and say "hey kid - go put on "Hey Jude" for me." I would and he would usually sing along, especially when the na-na's kicked in. It was the coolest thing.

Amazing documentary and commentary on this classic. Learned things I hadn't known, like that John had been married and with a son before they even broke out in the US in 64..and that Jude was really a song for Julian. Thanks for the touching story about you and your Dad.

I love this channel anyway. But you had my attention as soon as I saw a picture of The Beatles in your thumbnail picture, Adam. "Hey Jude" was (and still is) brilliant to me. It's a great ballad in the beginning, and the latter half is great because you can sing it with a big group of people. Thank you, Professor!

This is probably the most beautiful song by the Beatles. I was blessed with the opportunity to see Paul McCartney about 9 years ago and it was amazing, he completely dominated the audience, I remember a bit when he started talking in spanish and the people became really noisey... he just said Shh!!! and we were all shut. He blasted us with 41 songs one after another, and one of the most incredible things for me about that night is the fact that he didn't even have a glass of water during the performance. What a memorable show. People cried during the performance of Hey Jude, there's something earnest and relatable about that song that is hard to describe.

I would never try to take away anything from the Beatles, they were truly a once in a lifetime phenomenon, four musicians who, on their own, would have been at least noticed as standouts in an industry made of standouts. And yet..... I feel like the real story of thier true talents remains hidden. The Beatles were truly great at mimicking really any form of music genre they wanted to, anytime they wanted to do it, and make it sound just fantastic. You want a classic rock and roll song? Beatles, 'Twist and Shout' You want a classic Country and Western song? Beatles, 'Rocky Raccoon' You want a psychedelic acid-tripping song? Beatles, 'Tomorrow Never Knows" You want a classic lullaby? Beatles, 'Golden Slumber'. The list literally goes on and on.

My favorite Beatles song, which is interesting, because I heavily favor Lennon’s output with the band, like my dad. I’ve been a Beatles fan since I was 5, thanks to my dad, who just passed away this year. I’m so grateful that he exposed me to their music at such a young age. I’m about to turn 39, and I love them just as much now.

We went to see McCartney in 1990 and it was an experience that brought life full circle as the Beatles were at the center of my life as a kid. The end of the show concluded with Hey Jude, where 50,000 folks shared a cathartic one off, never to be repeated spiritual like experience, the best type of buzz.

Excellent presentation as usual with great anecdotal information. I've been aware for a long time that demand for Duane Allman grew as a session guitarist after his Wilson Pickett "Hey Jude" rendition. But I never considered that "Hey Jude" was instrumental (unintended pun) in launching the Allman Brothers. Just another in a long list of the incredible impact the Beatles have had in music. Difficult to pick one favorite of this band. If I want to listen to the Beatles rock, I'll listen to "Hey Bulldog", "Twist and Shout", and "Helter Skelter" among others. Their soft rock and pop songs are of such great quality that no other band can be included in the same category and I even find it difficult when creating playlists to include other artists along with the Beatles. "Two of Us" is beautiful and simple so I'll go with that for soft rock/pop. Has any band ever created so many beautiful ballads that you can make a top 10 favorites list? Although George's ballads are what I like listening to the most, Paul's vocal range in any genre cannot be bested. But when you need raw emotion, John had no equal. With a nod to Ringo who is a giant surrounded by bigger giants, his vocals in songs with him as the lead are my favorite songs to listen to for stress release particularly while I'm working. RIngo's drumming was what caught my attention when I first began to listen to them and it actually made me upset that the camera's didn't focus more on him when they were on the Ed Sullivan show.

When I was a kid, during the summers, my parents would always send us down to the local pizza place on Fridays. Maybe it was something to do with their schedule, and cooking was no fun on hot days anyway. It must have extended into the fall of 1968, since my first memory of this song was of it playing on the jukebox and the 3 minutes of "na na na na" at the end with maybe a couple of customers singing along. In retrospect, it's amazing that a jukebox could even handle a 7 minute 45 without cutting it off early. It was one of the few long songs that deserved every minute it took up.

Really enjoy your channel. I love classic rock from the late 60’s, early 70’s. That was such an amazing time. I swear I went to concerts weekly from the time I was 14 until 21, and they were the legends from that era. I also love how music was such a powerful connection between you and your dad. Both of my kids would say the same about me because I always had music on, and still do. My son and I always talked about music, and he got me listening to bands I wouldn’t have otherwise listened to (ie Linkin Park, Tool, etc..). He also taught me small bits of certain songs on the guitar. But he swore he hated the Beatles and would change the Beatles channel when it was on in my car. He died 4 years ago and god how I miss him. Like you I often remember songs and our discussions around them and for a second I’m back in that moment.

I remember seeing a guest on a late night talk show (can't remember who it was) years ago telling the story of having gone to hear Paul in concert. He found it interesting that all age groups were represented in the audience; baby boomers who grew up with the Beatles, kids who weren't born until years after the band broke up, and everything in between. Then he talked about how the audience sang along on the na na na na part, and the kid next to him ended the line with "Hey dude!"

Back in 1993 I used to donate to PETA, an animal rights organization that Paul McCartney was heavily involved with as far as support. One day I got a phone call from one of the employees at PETA saying to me "I have a couple of tickets to the Paul McCartney concert if you are interested." Huh? What? Paul McCartney? After I was able to catch my breath I said yes of course! She then asked if I wanted 2 tickets or 4 tickets. "Um...4 tickets would be nice." Paul was letting a bunch of tickets go for free to those who donated to these animal organizations. What a great way to give back! I still have my ticket stub, awesome show!

I loved Paul's voice in the Beatles but also in McCartney and Wings, "Band On The Run" and "Live And Let Die" are 2 of my picks. But the duo of Lennon/McCartney as songwriters are seared in history as being the greatest, and most influential duo's of their generation. "Hey Jude" has been a fave of mine since I was a little girl. This song stands the test of time. It will be on people's playlists for generations to come. "Let It Be" and "Helter Skelter' should be covered by you, too. Thanks again for another great video.

My brother was a student at University of CA at San Diego when the fam drove down from the Bay Area for Thanksgiving, and I remember several culturally iconic things that happened that weekend. One, we all sat in the living room of his apt. and watched Star Trek; two, he introduced me to The Mamas and the Papas; and C., he told me about how a DJ at a local station (FM, I'm sure) played the ending part of Hey Jude over and over all night one night shortly before that weekend. Probably the guy's whole shift. My bro stayed up all night listening, partly in disbelief, and partly to see how long the guy would really go with it. I think my bro was around 21, so I was 13. My brother went on in the 70s to start a non-profit art space in SoHo (NY) where performance artists could do their thing, and to become the sort-of "go-to guy" on performance art in the US. I wonder if that night of performance art was any inspiration, and I wonder if there were any repercussions for that DJ! My bro has passed, so I can't ask him.
