It was their first massive hit in America. it kicked open the door and let people know that they were here to stay leading to them being one of the biggest bands of the last half of the 80s… INXS and their top 5 hit What You Need ruled MTV with it’s innovative music video that won many awards and get this they made it for just 200 bucks.. After Michael Hutchence and Andrew Farris wrote the song and it became such a huge hit, Andrew says that he and Michael felt a lot of pressure to follow up it up with a massive Hit. He says they both worried that What You Need Was their peak so they dug down deep and approached their next album with the idea that every song would be a hit. That’s where the #1 1987 album Kick came from...up next the co-founder and cowriter of this legendary band Andrew Farris tells us the rest of the story.

A lot of kids today don't realize just how HUGE these guys were. For a while, they ruled MTV and radio. I remember on one MTV Awards show, Arsenio Hall (hosting) called them the best live band on the planet. He also referred to Michael Hutchence as "THE Michael," as opposed to the other one (Jackson). High praise indeed!

I actually got to see them live. I wasn’t a teen anymore, and unlike a RUSH concert there wasn’t a permanent cloud of smoke over the floor seats that got you stoned, regardless wether or not you took a puff or not, so I actually remembered the concert. They were great, one of the best concerts I have ever been to.

I thought the most compelling part of this interview was listening to to Andrew's reflection on what it means to be part of popular culture and the impact that has on him as a person and as an artist. But the saddest and most relatable part of the interview was him discussing Michael's loss and the regret he feels that Michael hadn't come out the other side of his personal struggles to enjoy the rewards & reflect on the joys of post-chaos life.

I love this band. I know you covered it but Don't Change is still one of my absolute favorites of theirs. They have so many songs that hit on a very high bar it is really hard to single them all out. They really were one of the last bands to really prominently feature Saxophone. It was such an integral part of their music and it still works so well in their songs. You should really do an interview with their sax player and see how those parts of the song came about and their process for adding that sound into the songs.

Andrew was the year above me in my school and I remember seeing them live many, many times. When Underneath came out we were waiting at the music store and we fought over the couple of copies they got in. I still have mine. When my wife and I formed a band at the same time, and we were successful locally, she'd studied Michael, and the late great Chrissie Amplett to see what they brought and how to emulate that. What he had was God given, but the stagecraft you could learn, and she, and the rest of us did. Vale Michael.

When you spoke of the memories attached to music, it conjured this one. I was a senior in high school. There was an amazing girl who was witty, funny, intelligent, talented, and beautiful. We were friends for a couple years because she had a long term boyfriend. On a jazz choir competition trip, she mentioned on the bus ride that she had broken up. That weekend, we got together. I started casually seeing her but soon realized that I could have easily fallen completely in love. I most certainly would have, but we both knew I had already signed up to join the Marine Corps, leaving for boot camp the day after graduation- just a couple months away. At that same time, I heard a song that perfectly encapsulated my feelings- of intense desire and the melancholy of knowing it couldn’t last. That song was INXS “Not Enough Time”. That song will forever bring back that time of life on the cusp of adulthood and losing the whimsy of childhood innocence.

Being from Australia, and old enough to have "been there", I remember seeing INXS on the legendary "Countdown" TV show in Australia in about 1980 or 81. My first thought was the name INXS was very similar to XTC who were very big at the time. I thought they had 'something' from the beginning but it wasn't until they released the LP "The Swing" and the single "Original Sin" in late 1983 that they really exploded in Australia. Everything they did after that was world class. So glad they hit #1 in the USA with "Need You Tonight" a few years later.

LIVE LIFE INXS!!! Please music Gods bestow the powers to induct this amazing and diverse band into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!!! Andrew Farris is one of the most talented song writers and musicians of our lifetime...plus he is such a cool person! Thank you PoR for continuing to highlight INXS and all their great success. INXS is so important to so many of us and they are under appreciated for all they brought to the music world for not just the 80's -- when they had their breakout albums -- but their entire catalog of music. The work Nile Rodgers did with them on Original SIn was so cool and innovative. Btw, how about the Farris family(Andrew - songwriter and many instruments/Tim on lead guitar/Jon on drums) and all that talent with those 3 brothers.

Good music is good music so I totally loved their style. I didn't own Listen Like Thieves except on cassette that a friend made of THEIR copy but, I did have Kick, which became my favorite. Never Tear Us Apart and Mystify were favorites in an already amazing album.

I rocked that album constantly. This album told me they were gonna rule the planet soon. Their steady rise from "Shabooh Shabaah" to "Listen Like Thieves" it was evident. I played this with another Australian band called The Models who had a song entitled "Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind." Their sound was similar. As for Michael Hutchinson, I instantly got a Jim Morrison/Mick Jagger vibe through the screen when I saw "The One Thing" music video.

Really incredibly innovative! Not only are they musically talented, they're visually and technologically talented to boot. When he talked about how fame really affects you as you realize you've become a part of culture, and he reminisced about Michael, it brought to mind an often overlooked pop star of epic proportions, David Cassidy. For some reason, I've been thinking about him a lot lately, listening to a bunch of old interviews, and really getting to know him in a way I hadn't bothered to during the height of his fame. He was an incredibly kind man who only wanted to please everybody around him, probably because he was desperate for his father's love and affection. And because of that, he got pigeon holed into his teen idol days and the songs that initially made him famous, despite having a stellar stage and Vegas career over the next several decades. I just watched him on the Graham Norton show back in 2003 where he was promoting a new CD, and he lamented that his label insisted that among the new songs, he include several of the old ones, like "Cherish," and "I Think I Love You." I guess they thought nobody would buy his new music if not for the ability to hear the most popular songs again. His label and managers really did him a disservice, because he had one of the most beautiful voices in the world. Just listen to "I Am a Clown" if there's any doubt. Eventually, he couldn't handle the sadness of not being loved for who he grew up to be, and like his father before him, turned to alcohol to numb the pain, eventually dying from liver and kidney failure as a result. In his heyday, he was bigger than the Beatles and Elvis, regularly filling massive stadiums of 40-100,000 screaming fans. He had a major impact on the lives of millions of girls around the world as many of our first crushes, myself included. I wish there were a way fans could better support the rock stars we love without making them feel obliged to live up to our own unreasonable expectations. Rest in peace, Michael and David. You're greatly missed. 💔😔 Thanks for another fascinating interview, Adam. Have an excellent day. ☀️

I remember seeing this video when it first came out. It was so different than anything I had seen up till then. I remember my buddy calling me to see if I was watching MTV. Of course I was, we all did back then. We watched the rest of it together over the phone. We decided that we needed their album and since he bought the last album, it was my turn. So the next day, after school, I went to the record store and bought the album. I’ve loved them ever since, and I was devastated when Hutchence hung himself. I just could not understand why an artist like him would take his own life, he had it all. There’s just something about the edge of sanity that creates great music, art and comedy.

I have such a similar story when seeing the video for the first time! I called my friend and was like "There's this band, "Inks", you gotta check 'em out!" He corrected me, "You mean in-x-s?" I was like simultaneously chagrined and also excited that I had found this amazing new sound. There are a lot of things that go through someone's head when they are in that mindset. It's not always clear, and it's not always right, but having been to that precipice myself, and looked down into that void, it's really hard to pull yourself back. I don't know what Michael was dealing with, but I wish someone had been there, even figuratively, to put a hand on his shoulder and say "step back, man." It's easy to hide that kind of pain and some times you never know.

I produced videos for Warner Records in the early 80's with budgets not much more than that, at the FilmFair Studio on Cahuenga (the old "Animation Alley" in Studio City). To say they were bad (both the videos and the bands/singers) would be an understatement. They were only slightly more "high-tech" than "A Flock Of Seagulls" with the aluminum foil wrapped tripod on a turntable. But they were fun times.
