Good music is just that, good music, no matter from what genre, era or part of the world. It's universally understandable, like a smile. I seriously side-eye people who only listen to one group/artist, I just don't understand how and why. The 'weirder' their playlist, the more interesting the person gets in my opinion, you just know that you'll hear some funny stories about how they came across *that* song.

You were dead on when you said "we like what we like". There's no music that you should have to feel bad liking just because someone else doesn't. Music is entirely subjective, one person's treasure is another person's trash. Because we form such strong and deep emotional connections to music, it can be hard not to be upset when someone else can't appreciate what we do. I love Milli Vanilla, Enya, nine inch nails, yacht rock, smooth jazz, heavy metal, EDM, IDM... it's all different and valid. Kurt Cobain was a legit fan of The Shaggs, who are renowned for how bad their music was. Never feel bad for liking something....or NOT liking something, as long as you don't begrudge people who love it.

In recent years, I have been preaching what you said about music being subjective. I've called a few friends on saying "(Insert song/artist here) sucks" and challenged them by responding that just because =they= don't like it, that doesn't mean it sucks. I've always had eclectic tastes in music and am all over the place when it comes to what I like. There are quite a few songs/artists that many would describe as a guilty pleasure that I just really liked and found out much later that some would describe them that way. Others... I knew the "cheese" factor might make some cringe. But... I would just smile and shrug at those around me, then play it anyway.

I never felt guilty of liking Starship’s song. It fitted in perfectly with the rest of the Hot 100 hits I was listening to.

One of my favorite movies to this day as a 47 year old that still wants a mannequin like that one and the song makes it great. I might only admit it here though.

You guys always put out great content. Even if I'm not a big fan of the artist or song you're featuring, it's always fun to watch, and take a trip down memory lane. 👍

This video is the reason why I love your channel. Wish I found the channel sooner. You don't just repurpose others work, or talk over the music, or use poor or wrong stock images. The content is top shelf! You include interviews with the people who were there. Love the research that obviously goes into creating your videos. That's a crap pile of work 👏 You can see your passion for the subject. Thank you for sharing, 🤗🇨🇦

I remembered this song from my childhood as a sort of corny radio hit (the young have such narrow tastes), and then in middle school (the 90s) started getting into all the Haight-Ashbury bands and fell deeply in love with Jefferson Airplane. I still remember how stunned I was the day I realized that this song was by them, it was wild 😂

Nothing about this band's discography is a guilty pleasure! I love this song! Had no idea they switched vocal parts. So glad they did, b/c it works! 🤘❤

Narada is truly one of the great US music producers of his era. Such infectious passion and enthusiasm for the song and a bloody good drummer as well.

Yeah, like Mutt Lange, I kept noticing his name on alot of big songs/albums in the 80’s. And, like Mutt, everything he touched turned to gold. Tons of hits and credits to his name. I also really enjoyed his production on “Junction Seven” which was Steve Winwood’s last Pop album in 1997. Fun fact: Narada appeared as the drummer in Aretha’s “Freeway of Love” and Whitney’s “So Emotional” videos.

Starship is such a great 80's group and Mannequin is one of my favorite 80's movies, I absolutely wanted to be Hollywood Montrose when I was a kid!!! Okay, maybe I still do want to be Hollywood 🤣 I love this song and pretty much every Starship song. Thx for showcasing this great song, Professor! 💜💜💜

Like the man said “Grace Slick ain’t no joke!” Both of them share the lead with equal “grace” as both have amazing voices. The icing on the cake for me is, they are both very intelligent people. Always have loved the band and this song. Never have been afraid to express my love for great music.

Love the 1987 romantic comedy film (one year after Kim Catrell starred in 1986 Big Trouble In Little China with Kurt Russell )! And the movie theme song too ! I didn’t know that the other Starship song We Built This City (1985) was also in the 1987 Mannequin Movie Soundtrack album too - interesting 🤔 The rock band changed their name 3 times during the 60s, 70s and 80s ! Dang ! I like that true boyhood story of yours Adam regarding your brother 🤣- I did that with my younger sister in the 80s 🤣🤣🤣- that’s my guilty pleasure- the sneaky teasing older brother that I was to my younger sis

The story about hiding Starship from his brother is so true. We were much more tribal with our music tastes back then. I started freshman year if highschool in 1990, so figure I was 14 then. My friends were all into heavy metal. The long hair, black concert shirts and all of it. Forget finding a Starship tape or CD, if they found anything softer than Metallica you'd be suffering for it. Even later in our twenties when it wasn't a big deal anymore, I'd be listening to a… I don't know, Cindi lauper ballad on the car stereo in the summer with the windows down, and I find myself turning the volume down when I'd pull up to a red light. Gen Z and Millennials, there's a lot of absurdity coming from that group but I give them credit; their music tastes don't seem to matter like it did in previous generations. I see kids listening to everything from Black metal to hip-hop. Between that and their easy access to both listen AND produce and distribute music, you'd think there would be better music than there is.

Spring of 1987, my family was visiting my grandfather in Bradenton, FL during spring break. I remember coming out of the community center in his trailer park, waiting for my parents, and coming across two younger girls, sisters probably, sitting outside and singing this song together. At the time, sixteen year old me was dutifully scornful of such a sappy song, but as the years went by I think back to that moment and how sweet it actually was. Especially when you think about the utter trash that girls listen to today.

Hi Professor! I've only recently discovered your channel and I've been having a great time reminiscing with you. I'm a sucker for a good unknown backstory.) This episode struck me in particulr because I, too, grew up in the Pacific Northwest (Seattle) with a younger brother I didn't share much music with. (You remind me a little of him, which is a good thing.) For us, the unlikely first convergence of taste was the 1963 album "Rhythm of the Rain" by the Cascades. Not just the single, the entire bubble-gummy album. I'm still amazed but you're right, there are only pleasures. My brother and I both have much more eclectic tastes today and we continue to share new and old tunes. All that said, here's a suggestion - and I apologize if you've done it and I missed it: C-I-T-Y by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. I was a full-on disco/pop boy when I heard it, but I was instantly obssessed - and frustrated because I ouldn't find anything by the band on vinyl except the "Eddie and the Cruisers" soundtrack. For a while it was my Holy Grail . . . and it's still my ringtone. Thanks! Keep up the good work.

There is something about how she sings "Let em say we're crazy" that hits me so hard. I always pretended she was singing to me as I wished for a girl like that who was so in love with me that she thought this way. I've never had this happen, but it's a great fantasy.
