You can’t see it in your head? Look up plaid tops, some are cut the bias, some only cut on the bias for the pockets, or yolk, or collar stands. Some don’t cut on the bias at all ( straight grain). Bias is always at a 45 degree angle. Look up making bias tape, bias tape is used for curved edges because it stretches with the curve. But cutting on the bias for apparel is not just for stretch in some garments, but purely for aesthetics. If you are a new sewer, stay away from plaid garments, because you have to pattern match seams, like she mentioned.

My dad learned to sew from a young age, largely due to the fact that my grandma was a seamstress and during tough times, being the eldest child my dad had to chip in whenever he had time. And as a result of having two great sewers in the family, I know nothing about anything when it comes to sewing techniques, except to come to gran or dad for help when I needed it… for some reason, I decided last week to buy some entry level satin fabric and try to make a dress for myself, just to see how it would turn out. While the material is being dispatched from the warehouse, I searched for lessons and tips on the topic just so I would feel less like an idiot when I get started on my project, and I greatly appreciate the information from your channel :)

Amazing video, I am not a beginner but I wouldn't call myself intermediate either, I am somewhere in-between with my sewing journey. I am planning to make a garment that cuts on the bias. Decided to do some research for tips and tricks and ways to cut and sew on the bias and that is how I came across this video. Thank you for this - I feel more comfortable with starting my new project - my fabric is a slippery one even though it is cotton - so wish me luck 🙂

Something I didn’t see in this video is the importance of hanging your pieces. When cutting in bias, there is a stretch to your pieces that’s gonna change the shape of your pieces and alter the measurements. Cut and hang your pieces overnight, then lay your pattern on your pieces to trim anything uneven BEFORE sewing your pieces together. Anything uneven will be very visible if you don’t hang your pieces before you attach them together.

If you have one front piece and two back pieces, would you cut the two back pieces facing in the same direction as though they were one piece or perpendicular to each other?

How about larger pieces as for a skirt? If I wanted a skirt that was fitted near the waist and flared more at the bottom, would it even fit on the fabric and how much extra fabric should be allowed? Will larger pieces distort more?

Bias cut fabric has a lot of movement so when you are pinning pieces together you often find that once piece is a little too short. With the extra seam allowance you can still put pieces together without having to distort the seam to make them align. Hope this helps a little bit!

What about when you have a plaid that isn't symmetric and the only way to get them front to match the back is to lay out side by side, rather than at 90 degrees?

Thank you for this information - I find it a very interesting subject. Is this method giving a better result than we normally get while using stretchy fabric?. Can we use narrow cotton tape sewn in with the seam to prevent stretching, and using a straight stitch? I remember some garments made this way many years ago but I am ignorant of how to sew on the cross grain - correction, was ignorant. I am interested in making a panelled tweed skirt, which would produce seams running along the bias, and I just am unsure of how to go about it.

I wouldn't say it's a better result but more of a similar result while still using woven fabric. You can definitely use twill tape if you wish. Doing a skirt or really any garment is similar to my example, as long as you pay attention to the grainline arrow on the pattern. Any seam that will be on the true bias is one you'll have to consider could distort if not stay stitched (or twill taped). I recommend starting with something simple just to get the hang of it first

I'm just literally starting out so it's very hard to understand when it goes so quickly. When I teach a take a small pause between thoughts so whoever I'm talking to can absorb what I'm saying. I was with you until you got to the place where you're flipping around different pieces. i REALLY don't understand the rationale behind using a different bias line for different pieces. You haven't explained WHY in a way that makes sense to me, so I can't see trying this method without checking out someone else's video. Too bad this video is so old. Mine is the first comment in 2 years, so I don't know if I will get a response. Anyway, I will watch it again and see if I can grasp the rationale before moving on to another video.

It's because the waft and weave have different tensions, that pull against each other, a centre seam stops this, so the fabric will sit more down and side seams don't pucker

Yes I agree completely- I just don't think the difference between the warp and weft is THAT different. It was very unclear when she described what would happen in you did not "balance" the warp and weft bias. I mean, maybe for a Vionet couture dress, but my experience with bias is that warp and weft are not that different.
