the reason why most rap artists' guitars sound bad is because they generally use vsts and plugins instead of an actual guitar, or even when they do use guitars its generally without many pedals/effects making it sound very bland/boring/inorganic
@masongreen13716 ай бұрын
Yeah most of it is quantized vsts with little effort put into making it sound big or organic. They mostly only use it in place of a synth line.

I think Fanano's opinion on the track is pretty consistent with what he's said he likes about Peggy, he loves Peggy's more dynamic style, the tracks that evolve over the runtime, and he didn't feel like this track really did that. Also didn't meet his expectation for another collab with Freaky. After all you have to take into account that meh never means he dislikes it.

Just gotta say, I dont think rappers use guitars because of an 'inferiority' complex... I think its simply because guitars sound cool, lol. The rest of what you said still stands, and I do think plenty of rappers want to be 'rockstars', but I highly doubt they're comparing themselves to actual rock artists, moreso they really like the aesthetic of rockstars. And guitars sound cool AF (usually). But yeah, good callout about not using guitars as poorly as rock artists use rap lol.

Howdy prof! Another great video, I really enjoyed the comparison to Rick Rubin and how despite having achieved the same thing. Aka, using guitars well in a hip-hop context they really went about it with completely different methods. Where Rubin is as hands off as possible and Peggy is the one making the beats. I would love to hear your opinions if you ever get the team on Das Racist, Heems and Sweat Shop Boys. Both Heems and Kool A.D. are basically grandfathered in the NY scene but have now splintered off into two completely different paths. We don't really see that many Pakistani artists and of Heems going for a more self conscious sound and trying to write in some more serious themes and ideas in his lyrics is something I think is worth digging into.

I don’t want to make any wide sweeping judgment as to my opinion of jpeg based off the Kanye thing as Kanye has always been his favorite artist, he also is somewhat conflicted about the whole thing from what I can observe. That being said, briefly excusing fascism does worry me a little bit. If I got a call from Picasso that’s one thing, I’d probably go meet them. If I got a call from Salvador Dali, I would not entertain the idea because as much as I love surrealism, Dali was a goddamn fascist and I wouldn’t want his art touching mine for fear of my anticapitalist messaging being tainted. To be clear, Kanye is a little different from Dali and I have more sympathy for Kanye going down the rabbit hole to fascism than I do for Dali. So while I think JPEG doing work with Kanye is deserving of critique, I don’t think it needed to be as aggressive as what he got on twitter. I mostly just hope that he got Kanye to make some progressive art again in some way. I also have to mention that I am severely biased, Walter Benjamin talks about how we need to be politicizing art as opposed to aestheticizing war, and I take that guys writings as scripture a little bit. So when Peggy waves aside Kanye’s reactionary nature so he can make some music, I don’t see that as standing on the side of politicizing art, it’s sort of dissociating itself from politics in pursuit of aesthetics. I just think it could be sort of a slippery slope, but I still love Peggy and I am still excited to see what he makes. I don’t think any of this invalidates his work at all.

his flow is sick. but does anyone else feel like this is a flanderization of his sound and style? "say that shit with your chest out" lyrics, alien bubbly sounds as the motif for the beat (the ENTIRE beat this time), and an anthemic guitar solo on latter half of track. we've heard this all before and done better i.e. Ghost of Ranking Dread and Garbage Pale Kids. honestly i find the beat here to be really uninteresting (almost like a jpegmafia type beat you'd find on youtube) and his rapping has just been reduced to "haha white people" and "people hate me" and nothing else, and this song is a prime example of that. I called it flanderization because i can't think of a better term to describe jpeg's artistic trajectory in the past few years than that
@professorskye6 ай бұрын
Interesting pov
@understanding776 ай бұрын
Yeah I kind of felt like that too, but to say it’s flanderazation is kinda disingenuous. Jpegmafia has always been a very cynical kinda guy. He thinks the world is out to get him, and has experienced heavy racism early in his life. That shit sticks with you. Early in his career he made experimental music almost in spite of southern racist white people, he went to shows looking for a reaction out of those types of people. It’s his whole MO. And the type of song structure you mentioned is only one archetype of song, he still has a lot of variation in his sound. But that’s just called having your own sound. You should be able to hear an artists beat and know it’s from them otherwise you have no originality
