The reason Nas gets GOAT status is cause he covers all grounds of being a great MC better than anybody else. He's deeper. He's thoughtful. It's not cause of Hate Me Now or If I Ruled The World. It's cause of songs like Purple, Black Zombies, Black Girl Lost, One Love, Doo Rags, Daughters, you da man, what goes around..... he speaks to and for the people. He also stood up against the greats. Never backed down from Biggie, Jay, Pac, Prodigy, 50. He does internal rhyme schemes better than anybody and his stories are the most detailed and intricate. It's really not close. And he didn't sell his soul to do it either. He didn't dumb down his rhymes. And during the most attention he got on a major label, he dropped HHID and Untitled that questioned where hiphop was going and Untitled, about literally everything that is still going on in society today. He called out Fox News years before it became the problem it is today. But he was knocked for kicking knowledge. And That's not even going over the commercial success.

Gostface Killa called Nas the Chosen 1 for a reason. Hiphop is based on lyrics, flow and the ability to tell stories. Jay got the flow, but lacks lyrics and story telling like Nas and Big. Jayz gives you that club banger and radio record - definitely the go to on that. However, when it comes to hiphop.. You would agree it’s deeper than just club songs (pop corn/bubble gum music) Hence why illmatic is still regarded as the Greatest Hiphop Record of all time. When you take Nas worst album and compare it with the worst albums of Jayz or other rappers. You will realise he's still better quality and has a timeless feel, & this’s because of the content & lyrics. But that's all. Am I wrong to say that Jay Z has great songs but Nas has great albums? Am I wrong to think that Jay Z has the attention but Nas has more of substance? How exactly do we define what a "great" is? To me, NAS has always been a master lyricist. Jay Z is a great rapper who has an amazing flow and knows how to pair beat with rhyme. "Biggie's Ready to Die album came out several months after Illmatic, and Biggie was crowned king of New York in the popular culture of Hip Hop heads, Ready to Die unfairly over-shadowed Illmatic, which is truly a classic album. Though they were quite distinct artists, they innovated in analogous ways. Biggie merged language that was high and low, vernacular and vocabulary words, in a way that sounded natural. He did this with a sophisticated understanding of the patterns of black language. When a different or unusual word or phrase could be introduced while still maintaining the aesthetics of black language, he inserted it. NaS, in contrast, merged concepts that were high and low, vernacular and metaphysical, in a manner that was whole rather than pieced together, thus presenting a complex that is unusual in any music outside of jazz. What Biggie started to do with language in 1994, NaS had already begun to do with ideas on Illmatic. He carries us through the "Righteous steps" of the cosmic, oceanic, and literal dimensions of his person. He transcends." - Imany Perry (Born To Use Mics)

New York was so hungry to win back the crown from the west coast that they crowned Nas the king , then Biggie was better so they crowned him the king , then they crowned Jay the king. Nas is a slightly better Guru. Nas has had a great career , but mostly nobody cared. Every one (esp New York) want to crown him the king , but no one pumps his music except hip hop heads , Plus go read his lyrics, make no sense, not street smart , not funny ,not witty ,not conscience, did not start trends , slang , nothing , no huge hits , no storytelling (rewind was cool) he is just good at everything but not great at anything. If no one had him top 20 , I would say he is underrated, but the best muh

I just wanna know who's his number one rapper of all-time? 🤔. At this point it's becoming silly to say another rapper is better than Nas. Like who really has more doper albums than Nas? Isn't that what's it's about? Dude has arguably the greatest hiphop album (illmatic) of all-time going back to 1994, dropped classics in between and just released 3 great albums in the last yr and a half which got him his first Grammy 30 years in the game! The closest one to Nas imo opinion was Jay-Z up until he dropped KD. And I personally think Jay should've responded with a project at that time to stay in the convo with Nas, but with these last 2 projects and the possibility of dropping kd3 it's pretty much impossible for Jay to crawl back into the convo.

Soulja Boi had a point but so did Nas. Nas didn't mean hip hop is literally dead. He meant it was dying because rappers at the time ('06) were becoming more focused on making money and the industry became more about mass commercialism (like ringtone rap era) than keeping the five elements alive: Emceeing(Lyricism), Breaking(Dancing), Deejaying(Producing), Beatboxing(Producing) and Graffiti (art). He wasn't the only one to feel that way either. Then came Wayne's run. Lil Wayne was the spark that kept it alive because he made rapping and lyricism cool again. Illmatic, It was written, Stillmatic, God Son, Life is good all classic albums on each decade since 90s. Another thing when Nas said Monotone like Guru he was actually repeating Guru’s bar from a Ganastarr track called Moment of Truth, doesn’t mean Nas himself is monotone he was just paying homage to Guru

This guy is a walking contradiction. He complains about people taking issue with his opinion, when he is the one who made the video calling Nas overrated, which is him complaining about other people's opinion, to tye point he felt the need to make said video pleading his case. When Made you look is on his list but not "I Can" , it's no wonder he made that video to begin with. He doesn't understand our opinions because he doesn't understand the culture, it's just music to him. The values go right over his head

@@millyoneyedeaz1350 I didn't even see the video where he is saying Nas is overrated I dont even want to see that. Surely if you are really into hip hop you can say a wordsmith like Nas is overrated, a rapper who possibly has the greeated hip hop album off all time.

To me there are 2 tracks, 1 each, that represent both these Hip Hop Monsters main audience; New York State of Mind and Empire State of Mind! Say what you wanna say, but it has always been clear to me that Jay-Z has always been geared towards Club/Radio hits, while NaS has always been about his Art/Culture when laying lyrics and creativity on Tracks, with the pressure from Record companies of having to produce something for the Club/Radio on every album.

OK, I had several paragraphs written for you, but I had to " switch the style up". Counter culture movements require youthful exuberance. The youngness you speak about is merely aggression that's pissed off the mainstream, and moved the needle in some way. NWA was banned from certain radio stations by law. But the SECOND you become pop music, (and there is a long descent from cop killers to working with them) not only does the "age cap" disappear, the requirement of base universal resonance starts to show up. Look at rock. Sex Drugs and ... Hip Hop. Rock was also an experimental style that started by "sampling" prior music, had a period of great expansion, but by the late 70's and 80's it became so commercialized and mainstream that it didn't resonate with the disenfranchised. In comes hip hop. And hip hops longevity has only been expanded by the internet and the vast globalization of the world it espoused. Hip Hop came along at the perfect time in history for a cultural movement: its has educated and informed people about the depths of the African diaspora, it has made Black culture and thus black people more welcome in general (a great improvement from the last 30 years for sure) AND its given voices for several groups across the world to get their point across. Age being the source of wisdom has been the point of the "conscious rapper" since the 90's. As you said, the Wu have been dismissed. Prodigy and Guru and MF are dead, Jay Z doing his own thing, and legends like Yasiin, Busta etc. have been surpassed in the minds of the youngings. However, you've heard "youngers" (ASAP, Logic and Cole aren't young but its all relative anyway) absolutely rep and die to work with the old school. I think Nas is one of the few olders who will actually take the time to BE THERE with the children. Not just talk about generational wealth, but help them attain it. I mean, Hit Boy is gonna be set for life. Nas is not only talented enough to resonate with the young boys, with bars alone, never mind his clout.... He actually does it! Him and ASAP is just the beginning I think. Expect tracks with Cole, Logic, and INSHALLAH Lupe and Mick Jenkins.... Expect Nas to be the Elderly Master to lead and turn hip hop from international medium, to Internationally Respected Art Form!!! I love Nas. Long May The King Reign.
