"A nice thing about Hip Hop is that it is getting less misogynist. I don't think Future got the memo." We'll forgive Prof Skye coming with the most basic Future observation bc he's taking him seriously for the first time.

The album cover was taken from his recent profile on GQ. Perhaps you could argue that this sort of laziness in just using a pic from a magazine photo shoot just adds on to the whole “sleepy and not giving a fuck” vibe he’s pushing lol. Great photo, though I‘d disagree about it being a top 10 album cover Another interesting note, the cover from DS2 is apparently a Shutterstock stock photo named “Color drop in water, photographed in motion. Ink swirling in water. Cloud of silky ink in water isolated on white background. Colorful ink in water, ink drop” that has appeared in science textbooks. Another intriguing album cover too imo despite its strange origins lol

Best way to get into the world of future is his album HNDRXX, it goes deeper into the points you brought up, specifically how he uses his wealth and power to try to fill his empty soul. His vulnerability on that album sold me as a future fan. Love your videos!

To keep it 100 with you Doc, I started listening to Future after Gunna,Lil Baby and a bit of Young Thug. To me he was the source. He had the sauce when it came to this sound. This artistry. I was distraughtly heartbroken and his cut throatingly misoginistic lyrics helped balanced me. Idk, his darkness recharges my ambition and supliments my sense of masculinity, especially learning to embrace the dark aspect of it. Tbh I could write an essay, if not a thesis on why he's my G.O.A.T,but that's Besides the point. Thank you for taking time to review. I'm not even done, but this is the in depth discourse I needed.

Future is my #1 most listened-to artist of all time (artists like Oneohtrix Point Never, Alex G, Parquet Courts, and Charli XCX also populate my top 10, so I'm not just a trap-head). My opinion on this album aligns with those of many other die-hard fans - it's pretty boring, and a far cry (in quality, if not necessarily sonics or subject matter) from the earlier work that resulted in and cemented his rap-royalty status. Of course, I'm glad you enjoyed the album so much, and I find your enthusiasm, open-mindedness, and analysis refreshing and illuminating. I'll definitely still be giving the album more listens - it's Future, after all. I'm glad you listened to DSTwo, too. I view Future's 2014-2016 run as his peak (Monster, DS2, and Purple Reign being the holy trinity), where Future mixed materialism with melancholy and redefined modern hip-hop with the help of producers like Metro Boomin, Southside, and Zaytoven. There's also SAVE ME for something a bit more subtle and melodic, Honest or HNDRXX for more pop and R&B elements, or Streetz Calling for pre-Metro Boomin-era trap. Re: different trap producers - I find Pi'erre's beats are often upbeat, bouncy, perhaps cartoon- or video game-inspired, and/or "chill" (for lack of a better word). Metro and Southside generally make more melancholic, sinister, obviously minor-key beats. Compare Pi'erre's lilting, almost-jovial beat on Carti's "Choppa Won't Miss" or his dazed, dreamy accompaniment in Young Nudy's "Sunflower Seeds" to the latter two producers' cavernous, ominous work on 21 Savage's "No Heart" or Future's "Monster." There are exceptions to these generalities, but I'm confident I could easily tell a Pi'erre beat from a Metro beat, most of the time. For another example of a recognizable style, Zaytoven (a producer who's worked extensively with Future in the past, like Metro and Southside) often has very distinct, fluttering piano lines in his beats. Producers like Wheezy and ATL Jacob have made some excellent beats as well, but I find that they lack the consistency and recognizability of the aforementioned four. Very nice point about human connection, happiness, and achievement. Christgau touched upon something similar in his DS2 review - "this miserable minor masterpiece would be all the proof we needed that money can't buy happiness." P.S. What's your favorite Rick and Morty episode?

Future is about pathos. People whose musical interest when it comes to Hip Hop is too rooted in their intelligence or otherwise won't like Future. My Future playlist has more hits than any other artist... for me. He gets the best beats because the best producers want to collaborate with him. If you don't like to bump your music (I used to have two 12-inch subs in my car in high school lmao: that's where I'm coming from), then he's not the right artist. Everyone in the industry respects Future. It's about more than music. And his work is undergirded by that appeal. Pure ambition laced with heartache. When I'm boxing or lifting or thinking about taking over the world, I'm listening to that motherfucker.

if u start to like his music with this album u should go to THE WIZRD next, thats his most musically fulfilling. he tries so many different styles (rnb-ish to introspective to industrial-ish to basic hard hitting trap) and a lot of the songs on that album have really cool beat switches. most production is handled by ATL Jacob too which i think is one of futures strongest producers

I really like this album but trap has kinda been on a downfall since 2018. There's obviously been some great records since then (Whole Lotta Red, Savage Mode II etc.) but 90% of the best records are pre-2019. So to really appreciate the sub-genre you really need to go back and listen to the classics, such as Travis Scott's Rodeo & Astroworld, Future's Monster & DS2, Young Thug's Barter 6 & Jeffery, Playboi Carti's Self-Titled & Die Lit, Migos' Culture and 21 Savage & Offset's Without Warning. Edit: Just heard you say you went back to listen to DS2, I highly recommend Monster especially the closing track Codeine Crazy which is widely considered Futures best and one of the best trap songs of all time

Try being an old man like me and going to see one of these rappers. I went and saw Yung Thug when he was a bit smaller of an act, he was suppose to go on at 10pm. My bed time is like 9pm so 10 was a stretch. He didn't come out until 2:30am, by that time I happily half asleep because it was in a theatre hall with no one there so I just laid out on the theatre seating while a DJ played, he mumbled for two songs and the show ended. It was awesome though because I have this story.

I actually disagree with quite a lot about the trap beats, and their all sounding the same point. I think Pi’erre and Zaytoven sound more disinflation than say Pete Rock and Premier. I think the producers with trap sound or influence, that you lump all together, are incredibly diverse. I think the producer tag evolve from this time as a means of monetizing the beats became they became more accessible to be stolen off the internet and KZbin.

For distinguishing trap beats like Pierre vs Metro, I think it mostly depends on chord progression. If you check tutorial videos on how to recreate their beats for example, Pierre beats are trance-like while Metro beats are nocturnal and haunting.

Youth better get used to age. People are living longer and fewer people are being born. In a few decades, owing to the lengthening lives of all humans generally, the aged will be overwhelmingly the majority. Ironically, or perhaps symptomatically the young are becoming increasingly touted and self-touting; these days fortysomethings, thirtysomethings!, are disparaging themselves as "old".... Maturity is not shameful! Nor is youth or age. The disparity of youth and age is a lie being sold us by tech/media/social institutions. Good way to weaken a population, creating arbitrary artificial divisions.
