Professor Skye's Record Review

You know, I'm working on the upload and just realized that this album could be considered to be about Covid in the same way that Didion's "Year of Magical Thinking" could be considered to be about 9/11. You know, they are both personal expressions of grief which manage to echo national and societal grief. Should have said that in the video, but its too late now.

Good review. Blonde Redhead have given me a sanctuary in bleak times. They are, you got it right, melancholy, not sentimental. Tonight I saw them live in Melbourne. They sounded great.

Hi Professor Skye, thank you for your analysis! I got into Blonde redhead through its lush beautiful soundscape of Misery is a Butterfly. That album is dark, existential, and feels like you're hanging on the edge of a cliff but on the contrary, it is presented with beautiful orchestration that sounds like you are trapped in a dusty music box a century ago. Sit down for dinner to me sound calm and feel they have gone full circle. It feels like the soundtrack to the peacefulness after a tragic thunderstorm. Sad but calming. I hope someday you will give Misery is a Butterfly and 23 a chance and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

I've heard of Blonde Redhead for years but Misery is a Butterfly definitely made me get into them for real. I'd also reccomend checking out the cover of this song by Ex:Re (the band Daughter singer's solo project) a beautiful tribute.

I was listening to Elephant Woman tonight driving on a dark, twisty road. It is a hypnotic song that never stops coming at you. Melancholic for sure, but I had a feeling of something skulking me as I gazed discomfited at its gauzy beauty.

I first heard them with Misery is a Butterfly too. But later I fell in love with their earlier guitar based albums.

Thanks for the review. Huge fan of BRH here from Italy* here. Linking them with literature reminds me of their first record La Mia Vita Violenta hints at Pasolini’s book with the same title. *BRH is a three-person band: Kazu Makino and twin brothers Amedeo and Simone Pace from Italy.

I just read an interview with Kazu Makino, the female singer of Blonde Redhead and ex-partner of Amadeo Pace, the male singer of the band. Apparently she was done with the band, even made a solo-album a couple of years ago, until Amadeo got sick. Her realising she still felt an emotional connection with him was the spark that resulted in this album, their first in nine years. That's probably the reason Joan Didion got quoted.

@@facundob.f8606 The interview can be found on the band's facebookpage, posted on september the 22nd. I've tried posting a link, but it seems to get removed each time.

I've been a huge BR fan since Misery...and I thought it was assumed or a widely accepted rumor. I went to a photography exhibition with a piece they were in and they looked like they were courting. Some event was happening on an NYC street and Kazu was smiling, running towards it while holding Amedeo's hand. I wish I remember the photographer. Was at Mori Art Museum sometime in the late 00's to early 10's.

I just happened upon your channel looking for reviews for this record. I’m probably close to your age & have been a huge fan of indie/shoegaze/4AD & how I’ve missed this band all these years is so puzzling to me! Please, though I completely understand the juxtaposition of Didion’s book, please, more commentary on the music:))))
