Only one of these things is NOT mentioned in my review:
Pre-Industrial England, James Bond, King Gizzard, UCSB, Isaac Hayes, Kate Winslet, PJ Harvey, Margaret Thatcher, Siouxie & the Banshees, Sunset Boulevard, Danny Glover & Carlo Ancelotti. Can you guess which one? ‪@officialbethgibbons‬

I've been wanting a "Trip-Hop" revival for a over a decade. We've been turning up for 20 years, it's time to chill the fuck out.

Would be amazing, but the problem is sample clearances. Unless it’s a major artists that’s selling millions, they’re not going to get samples cleared for legit triphop
@fentanyljones6956
@fentanyljones6956 Ай бұрын
There are a few hip hop artists doing a good job of carrying the influence but some good, authentic Trip Hop would be dope. I feel like a few have tried and failed since that initial explosion. Haven’t heard a great trip hop album that wasn’t made by one of that handful of British bands or DJ Shadow.
@fentanyljones6956
@fentanyljones6956 Ай бұрын
@@illFigure90that’s never stopped anyone. Sample clearance isn’t that crazy for small artists, they rarely strike small label releases and going through the process without big label budgets and such is actually fairly painless and usually inexpensive or they just refuse to clear it.
@illFigure90
@illFigure90 Ай бұрын
@@fentanyljones6956absolutely, lesser known artists can get away with it, but the possibility is still there. Trip hop much like hiphop from the 90s just isn’t going to sound the same today unfortunately.

AVAA 21:00 Lee Harris. There are a lot of Talk Talk connections with Beth, going back to her last solo album with Rustin Man - who is Paul Webb, bassist for Talk Talk. So yes, Beth has used the rhythm section of one of the greatest acts of all time. She's got rhythm - just not in the conventional sense. For reference, listen to Talk Talk's Ascension Day, After the Flood, or Happiness is Easy (also with childrens' voices) for some of Lee's best work. And if you want a great example of pre-industrial Anglia, listen to Peasant by Richard Dawson. And thanks, Skye, for making that reference. We should all be more Pep with a slice of Klopp, to be fair.

AVAA. Every video you put out gets me to listen to the album and then hear what you have to say about it. I have really wanted to broaden my musical horizons and you are a huge help with these videos. I appreciate all that you do. Your work provides a new perspective and has pushed me to experience art instead of just experiencing music. Thank you.

Adding to the "Portishead is a trio" comments, I think Adrian is vastly underrated. Guitars, bass, synths. He's a huge part of the sound. For Beth's album, I absolutely love it.

Finally, we are getting into real business. Portishead and Beth have been some of my most reverred artists of all time - I can argue that their 3rd album - Third has been heavily influential on music landscape. Immaculate record about Aging, Grief and Acceptance - The song, ‘For Sale’ is one of the most harrowing songs I’ve heard this year. Looking forward to your Thoughts mr. Skye. AVAA in advance.

AVAA, Great review Professor, some really interesting insights on this one. The Polish classical cover is strange and quite the coincidence for me, as after hearing Lives Outgrown, I added the song ‘For Sale’ to one of my playlists of songs that capture a similar essence to that track, and Spotify recommended to me a song called Fratres by a band called Ciśnienie. This happens to be Polish for pressure, and sent me down a rabbit hole of learning about the underground scene of Polish Art Jazz/Rock fusions, and I recommend anyone who enjoys heavy, slow-burning tracks with mind-bending climaxes to try out this band’s top tracks, they are truly something else. So, thank you Beth Gibbons for semi-introducing me to this band, and thank you for Lives Outgrown, my current album of the year.

AVAA!! So glad you finally reviewed my favorite album of the year! This record is so haunting, dense and beautiful that i feel like i'm in the middle of a Sergio Leone film scored by Beth Gibbons. Also, Raven Bush is the nephew of the legendary British artist Kate Bush. Not sure if you know her but she's influenced tons of artists like Björk, Fiona Apple, Charli XCX, FKA twigs, Lorde, St. Vincent, Perfume Genius & many others.

Stopped watching to listen to that Gorecki symphony off your recommendation; and I must say as a former violist, it’s a beautiful piece that I would find boring to play. Very impressive (especially in that first half of the first movement before the vocalist enters) how he’s able to build a complex texture and a sense of upward movement through (essentially) one motif.

I saw Portishead live in Seattle sometime around 2010. The crowd spent an awful lot of time yelling 'WE LOVE YOU BETH', until some hero with a good set of lungs and a good sense of timing yelled 'I like the whole band.'

Avaa it’s always interesting when you discuss non American albums. You’re right that England is really fucked right now. And it’s interesting you draw a line between that and this album and PJ’s. Definitely a plausible theory. English and / or British identity is a strange thing.. I didn’t think much of it until I moved to Canada, and now I realize that I do have an identity as English and British (distinct) and European and Cornish. And I think the post Brexit climate has brought that up for a lot of people, and it feels like a lot of the English identity has been (toxically) embraced and co-opted by the nationalists, which leaves everyone else in a position of looking at English as an identity and what that is in a non racist / xenophobic/ nationalist way. Oof sorry.. that’s a lot to say, great point!

AVAA! I’m interested in if you have more thoughts on / could go deeper into that aside about avoiding artist biography. My immediate gut reaction is to agree that art can and maybe should speak for itself, but then I also can’t say that no art has ever been improved for me by learning more about the artist who made it. I think even you seemed to imply as much in your recent Big Hit vid.
