In this episode Edward Stow examines the likely characteristics that we should expect to see in anyone seriously suspected of being Jack the Ripper. By examining the murders: where they were committed; the time of day the were committed; how they were committed; and the type of victims - can we draw any conclusions? And from this can we rule anyone out?
With thanks to Mike Pemberton for de-aging, colourising and AI video based on the Charles Lechmere photograph.

I still don't understand how the wounds on Polly Nichols' belly could have been caused. How did the killer get to that part and then cover it up so quickly? Victorian clothing was completely impractical. Raising a victorian skirt on somebody that is laying down to access her abdomen is not easy. Most of the time they had multiple layers of clothes as well.

I just watched a documentary about a Serial Killer, who targeted young women. He managed to evade suspicion because he gave the Police a different name and this wasn't followed up because the Officer who interviewed him, at his home; thought he was too "charming" and "honest" to be the suspect, in such a heinous crime!!! He evaded capture for four more years and a total of seven murders! It reminded me instantly, of Charles Lechmere and I had to mention it. The charm, the composure, is what they are Masters of. They're not panicking, uncontrolled lunatics. They fit in, they don't stand out.

The murders suddenly stopped 1: Because it was getting too risky for Hutchinson 2: Because after his statement he was known to the police- The pubs closed at midnight and boarders couldn't return to the Victoria Working Mans home after 1 AM . Charles Lechmere had a good reason to be out in the dead of night - he had to get to his work but the unemployed Hutchinson had no good reason to be wandering the streets after 1AM. This is why the murders keep getting closer and closer to where he lived . He couldn't be seen wandering too far from his home or to be seen anywhere near any future killings because he was a face known to the police. And he didn't have a good reason to be there. In his statement Hutchinson admits that he wandered at night on two occasions "looking" for JTR he also states he would stay up all night then return to his boarding house when it opened and sleep all day . I speculate that when he killed he stayed up all night cleaned himself in public fountains and returned clean to his boarding house as soon as it opened, But following the frenzy after Mary Kelly's death there was increased police presence on the streets and this pattern of behaviour was simply too risky to continue

Well done Ed. You've just binned 99% of the named suspects, from the ridiculous (Druitt, Tumblety etc) to the very very unlikely (Kosminski etc). It really is astonishing that some, apparantely level headed, people still hold with what the ignorant, outdated authority figures of the time opinioned. Charles Lechmere is by far the only named suspect who fits all the aspects you've gone through in this episode. Cheers ✌️

I used to think that Lechmere committing the murders on the way to work, while working or on his work route in general, was a bit of stretch. The more I think about it though, the more I think it makes sense. He knew the streets at this time like the back of his hand, down to police beat routes. This is the place and time he felt safest, that he was most familiar with. Like you also mention, it provides him with a perfect justification if intercepted, such as when he met Paul.

I absolutely agree with your summary on the profile of Jack the Ripper. Again it’s all the more reason why Charles lechmere should be looked at as the offender. I’ve always been sold on your theories of Charles being Jack the Ripper. There are just to many parallels for him not to be the killer. When it comes to serial murders he checks all the boxes. The murder of JTR final victim Mary Kelly looks extremely premeditated ,On the night of Thursday 8th Nov and into the morning of Fri 9th Nov Mary Kelly was looking for customers and was murdered approx 4 am on Friday morning. The killer seems to have been very confident that he wasn't going to be disturbed for his two hour mutilation and made himself quite at home lighting a fire that was still warm at 10:45 am This suggests the killer has left around 6 am possibly even later - so how did the killer know he wasn't going to be disturbed ??? The killer would have known it was safe to enter her home if he had been stalking Mary Kelly and observing her room for a long time until he was confident no one else was coming to see her . Hutchinson stated he saw Mary at 2 am she asked him for money but he turned her down . He then saw Mary with a client followed them back to her home and he watched her room until 3 am despite the weather being very rainy and cold that night. My take on this is that Hutchinson had missed the 1 am curfew for the Victoria working men's home and was now shut out for the night with nowhere to stay . I think he saw Mary at 2 am with a client and followed them back to her room . He Waited until the client had left and at around 4 am when he was confident the coast was clear entered Marys room and murdered her , He would have been wet and cold after waiting hours in the rain this was why he lit the fire. He exited the crime scene around 6 am and crept back to his boarding house which would now have been open and was literally a short stroll down the road . Three days after Marys murder Hutchinson admitted he had both followed Mary and observed her house for at least an hour on the night of her murder and had happened to see her with a wealthy Jewish JTR - I think Hutchinson was the murderer and his story was only partially correct.

I was hesitant about Charles Lechmere or Cross being the killer because he was still alive and free when the killings seemed to stop, but your observation that serial killers can indeed stop makes me less hesitant. I understand from another documentary that he had success later in business. Maybe going into business, with all its demands on time, made him give up killing especially if he was making money.

There is an interesting characteristic of psychopaths. They always tend to power. In the case of serial killer psychopaths (who are a minority) they seek the maximum power which is to kill a person, there is no power greater than that. However, sometimes they can manifest their psychopathy in other areas such as politics, business, as merchants, religious people, or even their family... in that case their need is covered and to the outside they seem like ordinary people(like Janus the two-faced Roman God). That's why they are so difficult to detect.

something else that points to the killer being a member of the working class was the environment that he was operating in . Dean and Flower street Commercial street and Dorset street all seem to be hot spots of JTR presence/ activity . These were some of the worst and most dangerous slums of the Victorian era .They represented side by side Jewish and English neighbourhoods that resented each other and were menaced by street robbers and ethnic gangs a real Gentleman wouldn't dare set foot in these neighbourhoods alone and especially at night . Really only someone with local knowledge would have been capable of navigating these dangerous labyrinths . JTR appears to have been very confident and completely at home in this poor /lower working class slum. JTR has been geographically profiled to be living in the Dean and Flower street area - People who lived in this area were members of the lower working class.

It doesn’t seem as if this 2005 symposium was specifically geared to discussion of lust murderers, which JTR most definitely was. The latest research on the psychological profile of lust murderers remains much more closely aligned with John Douglas’s profile of JTR in the 1980s than the more generic information presented in the 2005 symposium. For example, lust murderers do tend to escalate in violence over time, which is not the case for all serial killers. They are less likely than other types of serial killers to stop or have long pauses in their murders. Additionally, many of these quotes from the 2005 symposium describe organized offenders, where JTR was a mixed type at best and primarily a disorganized offender. These categories remain valid and I’ve not heard a convincing argument for JTR being an organized offender given, for example, (1) his choice of convenient, easily accessible, high-risk victims; (2) his propensity for taking higher risks in approaching and attacking most victims on the street in the presence of witnesses, (3) the lack of basic cleanup like pulling skirts back down to delay discovery.

Thank you for yet another excellent video. Regarding the idea that JTR had surgical knowledge. You may be aware of a book which I read some time ago theorising that the culprit was a German sailor (I forget the author). In the book, the author stated that it was entirely possible that some of the victims bodies were used by medical students who were known to sometimes practice surgery on corpses unofficially. The author stated that the local mortuaries used for some of the victims were by no means secure. I thought this was an interesting theory to explain the contradictions drawn from studying the different types of wound observed on some victims.

What about William Berry? He was hanged in Scotland shortly after the London murders ended. He was hanged for killing his wife in which he 'butchered' her viscously - cutting her entrails out and spreading them all over her. He lived and worked in Whitechappel at the time of the murders. Later he moved back to Scotland where he killed his wife. He seems yo fit the violence profile, while also fitting the completely right theory that the murderer had local street knowledge. It seems inconceivable that someone like the American or one of the Windsor's as is sometimes put forward could have had street knowledge which your channel succeeds in convincingly arguing he must have had. If William Berry is not a good candidate looking forward to your video on it

Excellent Edward. Very thorough and thoughtful study. I absolutely agree that he would have looked mundane to the point of being boring. He would have taken trouble to keep an exterior appearance of normality while his inner world was quite the opposite, simply because he was trying to continue functioning. I would add that i find it unlikely that he stopped at the date commonly believed. He may well have wound down over time, with age, as sexual interest or sexual expectations on him became less. I say expectations because i am leaning towards him having some degree of sexual dysfunction probably stemming from childhood due to him witnessing and being influenced by sexual situations involving his parents, whether they involved him in those or not. I also would tend to believe he was in a relationship and was struggling within it. But he is not the kind to ever commit suicide. He may also have stopped due to some accident that affected him physically. He may also have started killing due to some accident that affected him physically, especially sexually. The extensive mutilation when he had time and privacy suggests an inability to know when to stop and a suggestion that he was in search of something in his victims that he could never find, indicating that the object of his search was not something physical, but rather feeding a psychological and emotional need. Each killing is an act of conquest and absolute domination and has both acquitistve and destructive elements. He took for himself the woman's existence, personal privacy and dignity but could not do it without also destroying those things, leaving him with nothing when he walked away, unlike the robber who leaves with his pockets full. So i believe he always left feeling unsatisfied. The need for absolute domination is common in those with deep underlying insecurities, again usually stemming from a childhood where the person felt powerless in the face of a domineering adult or a cruel heartless world. But that's just my opinion. You did an excellent job.

Hutchinsons description of the killer being Jewish was taken very seriously but this was likely because the police privately knew that a message implying the killer was a Jew had been seen written on a wall the night of the double event . The police ordered this message to be erased for fear it would cause race riots. But the police probably thought the killer actually was Jewish. Hutchinson declared he had seen The Killer in Petticoat Lane - The Jewish market consequently the police employed him to help them find this person . If Hutchinson was JTR then this was a horrible irony an antisemitic killer being paid to help the police find the "Jewish " killer .

Does anyone else notice any similarities with the modern murderer Robert Napper, who killed Rachel Nickell and others and is now in Broadmoor? Like Jack the Ripper, Napper attacked women in the open and killed victims with multiple stab wounds. He also managed to get into one victim's house where he mutilated her body and took body parts as trophies.

Been following your channel for a year now. I really appreciate the thoughness of your videos. While I do believe we will never know the identity of JtR for certain, Lechmere makes the best suspect to date. I do quite like Jacob Levy as well. Worked and lived in the area, was a working class man, and would have reasons to be out on the streets early. The way you have dismissed a lot of the traditional narrative of the case requires a lot of guts and I applaud you for sticking you neck out. Keep up the good.

The final and most brutal murder occurs 8th-9th Nov 1888 of Mary Kelly in Dorset Street on the 9th a woman called Sarah Lewis states that at 2:30 in the morning she observed a short stout man lingering outside Mary Kelly's room . If the murderer was a local he would be paranoid that he had been seen and could potentially be identified either by ms Lewis or or other locals The murderer would have felt that his hand was being forced and that he would have to front up and present an alibi. Sure enough after stewing for three days the local unemployed labourer George Hutchinson shows up at the police station reveals that he knew Mary Kelly and also confirms that he was lingering for at least 45 mins outside Mary Kellys residence but the reason he gives is that he knew Mary Kelly and had seen her in the presence of a wealthy Jew who he presents as JTR . And was lingering out of concern for Mary Kelly - This concern did not translate to him notifying the police the next day the way Sarah Lewis had. Hutchinsons alibi was believed by the police and he had successfully managed to deflect attention away from himself and back on the Jewish community . Hutchinson was an English member of the poor working class who largely fits the FBI profile of JTR he was significantly younger than Lechmere and fits the age group of The FBI profile . He also lived within the Geographical Profile that has been created for JTR .

Were any of the family at all suspicious ? In other words do we know anything about what happened afterwards with this suspect that could add more detail and shed more light on him . He is buried in a paupers grave in Bow, his wife resting in a grave of her own in the opposite corner of the same cemetery; she died in 1940. Lechmere hails from a rich family, but his grandfather, Charles Fox Lechmere, squandered his part of the family money.

Commonalities exist between Lechmere and Hutchinson - both were working class both would have been familiar with the Dean / Flower st / Commercial street hotspot . Both seem to have been reluctant to come forward to the police with their story . But a key difference is accountability . The FBI profile suggests JTR was likely a young unmarried man who interacted with prostitutes and was unlikely accountable to anyone. Hutchinson admitted that he knew Mary Kelly well and had given this prostitute money on many occasions. Hutchinson was young unemployed single and living in the JTR hot spot . - Lived in a boarding house that was physically in the JTR Hot spot and was unaccountable to anyone. On the other hand Charles Lechmere was accountable to a number of people - His wife and Family and particularly his work that he had to be at 6 days a week for 12-14 hours a day. Mary Kelly was murdered at 4 am on a Friday morning and the murderer is thought to have exited the crime scene at 5:45 am Friday - Lechmere was supposed to be at work by this time . The middle aged Lechmere is a worthy suspect but the young Hutchinson comes much closer to fitting both the FBI and geographical profiles .

The most detailed eyewitness description of JTR ever given was forwarded by George Hutchinson . Hutchinson blamed the worst murders England had ever seen on a short man who dressed in black and wore a black hat . Hutchinson continued the narrative that JTR had started and insisted this person was a wealthy Jew who lived locally and Hutchinson suggested the Jewish haunt of Petticoat lane which was merely yards away from where Hutchinson lived. Hutchinson also insisted he was the only person who would be capable of identifying this person. The short stocky 30 year old Hutchinson knew that he had been seen by multiple witnesses and had admitted to prowling outside Mary Kellys house until three in the morning - therefore to deflect suspicion away from himself he was forwarding a Jewified description of himself to the police - and the police fell for this ruse and even went so far as to employ him to find the culprit - this is likely to have been the high point of Hutchinson's life.

Hi, I have also thought that Lechmere was the killer as well. I just discovered your site a few days ago. so i have an idea for you. You mentioned something I had not heard before. That being, that his mother raised one of his kids all her life. You said you did not know why. Why does a grandmother raise one child only for her son? I think she raised an illegitimate child of her son. According to something you said in a video Lechmere moved away from near his mom before the killings started and that Mary Jane Kelly(MJK) had just moved into the area when that said daughter was 10. Lechemere was married at 20 or 21.He would have been around 40 or so when the killings started. So the child in question would have been born when he was 30 and married. Now he had to tell his mom something to get her to take care of this child. His wife may or may not have known who the child was but she would have had to have been told something to explain why his mother had a child of that age under her care. So...I believe a possibility is as follows: Luchmere was unfaithful to his wife with prostitutes in his area. MJK became pregnant and his mom raised the child. All was fine until MJK (who's name we don't really now) moved near his mom. The name she choose according to info I got from you was the same name as Luchmere's daughter living with his mother. I think MJK moved there to get closer or to get to know her daughter. LUchmere freaked out over this! Why? There could be many reasons. His mother, his wife may not have know the childs mom. His mother may have known of his cheating but not his wife. They both may have known but did not know the mother was a prostitute. In any case he could not have all this come out. I don't think he was a psycho. I think he came up with a plan to kill MJK. The other woman might have been with him too and/or knew MJK. They may have also known that he was the father as they would have talked amongst themselves. He may not have been the father in fact but was told he was. He may have been too. Even then woman knew how not to become pregnant, so if they did they might be able to narrow down the father. He was not a genius but i think he was clever! He wanted to kill MJK. If he did that some of the other woman might have known MJK wanted to reach out to her daughter and would have eventually mentioned this to the police. So he kills the other first and then MJK. You say that the victims may have known the killer or was comfortable around him. THe police think MJK knew her killer and brought him to her home. Most prostitutes do not bring the johns home. Many do not believe it was him as the killings just stopped. So they think that the killer may have died or was in an asylum or something. I think it stopped because Lechmere achieved his goals. What do you think about my hypothesis?

Yes I do agree with your summary. It shows the police had no idea how to apprehend the culprit if Montague John Druitt was suspected. You make a good case as always . Lechmere , guilty or not , remains the only viable suspect amidst a cluster of non-starters. If it wasn't him then it was probably someone with a very similar profile (local man , knew every street and alleyway , in his thirties, physically fit, a working man of low status , had a good excuse to be on the streets at ungodly hours, able to blend into his surroundings and appear normal, etc) rather than a local lunatic, foreigner, or 'posh' outsider getting his murderous kicks in the east end.

Hutchinson lived as a boarder in the Victoria Home for Working Men Corner of Wentworth and Commercial street this is only a stones throw from Flower and Dean street the area that JTR has been geographically profiled to be living in . Looking at The five known murders one thing becomes quite obvious each murder is getting progressively closer to Commercial street until Mary Kellys murder which was virtually next door to where Hutchinson lived and Hutchinson admits he was interacting with Mary Kelly and loitering outside her room until 3 in the morning - Major chance he is the killer.

There is a distinct difference in the way male and female eyewitnesses described JTR. On the night of the double event the laborers J.Best and J. Gardiner both saw him in a public Bar with Elizabeth stride both got a very good look at him and described a short stocky Englishman who was respectably dressed -they ridiculed him thinking it odd that a well dressed man was with such a low class prostitute. But the female eyewitnesses who were probably better observers of a mans clothing described him a looking like a clerk ( lower middle class) or a shabby genteel ( a Gentleman -who had fallen on hard times) But instead of being a Gentleman who had fallen on hard times could the killer have actually been a working class man who was simply wearing second hand clothes of the middle class ??? - such second hand clothing was readily available in the Whitechapel markets.

The received opinion at the time was that no special skill was required. But had you experience in cutting flesh, even horse flesh, I should have thought it would be a bonus. The East End wasn't all poor - very true. There were pockets of affluence, but the overwhelming majority of the population consisted of the industrious or respectable working class - which is what I said. More prosperous people may have had dark clothes, but not grimey dirty dark clothes - there is a difference in appearance. They would also tend to have white starched colars and cuffs. Their lodgings would tend to be clean and attended to by a cleaner! Despite the proximity of main roads, knowing immediately which alley led to the road would not have been simple to an outsider as darkness is disorientating. I bet many would get lost now with street lights.

The route from Brown's Stable Yard to Whitechapel Road for example, might seem straight forward to you, but at night, if you hadn't been there before and had been led to the crime scene by the victim, I am certain it would not have been easy or straight forward and that applies to all the scenes.
