Hey thanks man! I really appreciate that! Yeah, there are a lot of people who have channels only for reviews. I now want this light to use at weddings. My question to you, since you also use Canon, is what to you use at wedding receptions? I have the 600ex rt flashes and I have a Photix Indra 500lc that uses the same canon RT system. It is great for receptions when I mix flashes and strobes. Do you use strobes at receptions? I really would like to be able to do that, but the cost of the A1 makes that a very difficult decision.
@travisharrisphotography6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, so I used to have 4 600RT's and then sold them and bought the cheap manually only Godox 850's II. They are okay, and the lithium battery is nice. At less then $200.. LOL its a hell of a deal. I use three off camera at receptions. Works for me. No need for more costly units like the B10, or anything else.
@nordfilmcompany6 жыл бұрын
You can use a1 on camera on ttl with diffuser and trigger a b10 (pointed into the ceiling) in manual grp d. This way you controll "ambient" with b10 and have ttl on your a1 as ypu move from one situation to another.
@travisharrisphotography6 жыл бұрын
@@nordfilmcompany yes, many creative ways to mix lights for sure! For me, I dont use TTL at all at weddings (or anything else, except to target a test shot with the Profoto remote, and then switch to manual). The truth is... that the cheap godox lights are nice at weddings for fill, and dance floor stuff. I LOVE the A1's but, I would need 4 of them.. and this is just too much for me, and a good example where the value of the light starts to get very small. The B10 however, is a much different story.. but, there is no way I would want to put the type of wear and tear on the flash tube at a wedding reception. For me, that would be a terrible waste of a primary light. The cheaper off camera flashes are better for that. Just my humble opinion, and I shoot a lot of weddings :-)
@jaayres206 жыл бұрын
I agree I'll just stick with what I am using for now. I also just learned you can't use two A1s as masters on two different cameras without one master firing the other. I always share my off-camera lights with my second shooters.
@travisharrisphotography6 жыл бұрын
@@jaayres20 Yeah, I would stick with the "nice" lights for the "nice" portraits. The whole idea with a B10, or B1X is that you can bring the studio along with you, and use the OCF mods. THIS is where this shines like I did in my video. For weddings.. they are great for the styled shots for sure, you can whip out that OCF magnum, or beauty dish.. and get some nice results. But, not at the reception. This (to me) would be such a waste of wear and tear. Get some cheap V850's like I did with lithium batteries, put 4 of them around the room and only roll with a remote on camera. Smaller, lighter, and way better results with everything being directional. I ditched the on camera flash awhile ago.. so much better once you setup flash zones at the reception. If someone comes up to you and says "can you take my picture" you say.. "SURE! stand right here..." and you place them where you know your OCF will work well :-) You can split the dance floor with your assistants, and take turns on different channels. etc..

What do you think the difference is between a silver BD and a magnum.
@travisharrisphotography6 жыл бұрын
Light spread, and power. The BD will give you a wider spread.. but at a lower power. It also gives you more options if you dont need the power (sock, and cap). The Magnum, is the big gun that kills the sun when needed, yet still looks amazing. Different tools for different situations really.

Nice review. I had concerns about buying the B10 based on its power v. that of the B1x. And you mentioned in the comments about Profoto updating the B1x. I can see a pair of B10's being a nice companion to an updated B1x as a main light. Keep up the good work! Well presented!!!

Thanks. I had the same concern, and had the two B1X location kit. After comparing side by side with the B10.. the B1X kit was returned :-) I use them all the time to over power the sun, and they are amazing. No matter what the new B1 will be, it will be larger and heavier.. I think in many ways.. the B10 is the current flagship for Profoto. It's more powerful than you think. Hey Travis, first of all just wanted to say thank you so much for all the video reviews and congrats on the work. I was wondering if you have shot with them in studio, through bigger modifiers with diffusion, or beauty dish with grid and sock, and how did it perform? I’m considering switching my lights to b10s but I do a lot of studio work. I mainly like the small footprint of them, but I’m never gonna be using a magnum reflector and I’d be shooting ISO 100 most the time, sometimes stopped down on my aprerture to f11. Also, have you used them outdoors with bigger modifiers like parabolics or something like that? Would love to hear your thoughts and thank you once more.

It appears someone finally made an HSS unit you like as much as using Hi-Sync! Great review Travis, and I thought your Hi-Sync vid for Elinchrom was fantastic, this is even better. Hard to believe you are getting similar results with much less power than the ELB or Quadra 400 etc. With HSS it would seem you'd need the lights much closer at higher shutter speeds due to power loss from HSS. I have a Godox/ Flashpoint set up and find at higher shutter speeds I need to be much closer than how you had the lights positioned. Of course I was using either a 22" beauty dish or a 48" octabox. I'd like to hear more about max distance etc. Not sure if you covered it in the vid, if you did I must have missed it. All the best.

I get what you're saying. I attended a Joe McNally workshop and he shoots so much commercial bwork and rarely was he ever wide open with his lenses. Most of the time he was around 5.6. KZbin and IG photographers just do the same wide open shots with pretty much the orange and teal look.

@@hagarthehorrible1391 Love Joe, at one time he was my #1 go to guy :-) He is the one who got me into the Quadra's and Elinchrom for the past 8 years LOL. Joe will tell you himself, that settings, f-stops, etc.. all of that makes no difference. All of this is just a set of tools to do a job, and to bring a vision to life. The shots that I take, I think about before I take them. I want a specific results that I myself favor (there is no right or wrong), and go and make it happen. Videos like the one I made, are great for others who may have a similar style and want to see all this put to action in the field. Hope it helps!

Starting shoot with the B10 near the pool is itching for a gust of wind to blow it into the pool,sand bag me thinks

LOL, I talk about this in the video.. keep watching. In this case, there was zero wind. This is always the first thing on my mind.

One advantage the B1X has is that it can support big mods like a XL Umbrella, whereas the B10 is probably too small/light to hold up larger mods.
@travisharrisphotography6 жыл бұрын
The advantage in my testing is that the b1x had a wider spread, which in theory will help fill out larger boxes. The link below to profoto academy will illustrate this comparison wayyyyy better than anyone else. However the b10 Handels well even with the big mods.

Also, I use the xl umbrella at weddings. No worries at all with the b10. Solid as a rock.

@@travisharrisphotography Crazy! I've put the XL Umbrella on my B2 head and I didn't feel confident it could hold it without putting too much stress on the B2 head.

@@roblloyd_ Yeah, with the B10 its different. The mount is not apart of the head this time.. its a non issue.

Travis Harris Photography hi, i use the glass dome on my b1 for larger modifiers(6’ or bigger). I wonder does it brother b10 can do the same thing? It seems like no one is talking about. Appreciate your video.

To my experience profoto lights are very faulty and expensive.The quality of the light system is worse than the cheapest light system.

Ya know, I might just agree with you. Having used them now for close to 2 years, I am thinking of rolling with Godox now. We will see.. :-)

I am not convince when videographer don’t know how to set exposure on his video. Man, everything is too white!!! You are just overconfident with a lot of expensive equipment, but this video sucks. Wached for 7 mins of video, horrible.
@travisharrisphotography5 жыл бұрын
Lol, well I guess the other 37,000 people who watched it think it's okay. Maybe your problem is that your being too critical of something that makes no difference. The quality of the video is not what I'm paid for and have made a living at for over 10 years. It's the photos. I would have been happy with a cell phone video, the point is the information and message. Be smart, look at the bigger picture here and adjust your way of thinking and you will get more out it. If you disagree, then just find someone else to shit on 👌
