Yeah but they're making $120k in NYC so if you adjust it for price of living they're actually making like $50k
@kevinjohannesen609411 ай бұрын
Where i live the cost of living is higher, taxes are higher and VAT is 25% and average salary for software engineers are $65k
@TheLastCodebender10 ай бұрын
good point, but since covid, a lot of company allow remote work and you can be based anywhere you want in the US while keeping the same salary. A lot of people at my company moved out of NYC to small cities, still have the same high salary, so they are saving a ton

Thanks man I was kinda satisfied with what I make (above avg. in India) but the things I coded as solo front-end or Full Stack dev are like hiring website, EduTech website etc etc.I am going to try harder. I did give an interview for Turing but they won't hire someone with less than 3 years of exp(I have 1.5 yrs as part-time but they won't accept it). Even though I am the one who resolves bugs of 3+ yr coders in my current and previous company. Could you tell me some platforms I could use to find myself these jobs I am PERN Stack Dev with Next.js also I know TS.

" London has high salaries " /s . Our wages are at sea level my guy. Saw a data science role requiring a masters degree paying £27k. I could get more working at mcdonalds.
@TheLastCodebender11 ай бұрын
I mean you have the potential to make high salaries there, there are companies in London paying above £70k and more. Not everyone gets that ofc, but there are jobs that pay high salaries for devs. Same thing in NY, not everyone gets paid $120k, but the point is that it's doable, there many developers making a high slary, so there is a path to achieve it. For many places of the world, there are literally no software jobs that pay in that range, so it's nearly impossible to achieve it there unless you move or find a remote job that doesn't pay based on local market.

I'm not sure engineers are well paid in dubai, tell me if I'm wrong but from what I know engineer salaries are more around 3000$ per month in localisation.
@DarkRaviForDeath11 ай бұрын
The first tip is a gold mine of a tip and one that I'm going after now. Actually, what I'm doing is cold outreach to startups that interest me that also recently got funding. I'm requesting virtual coffee chats just to get to know one another, and then hopefully I will be top of mind when hiring picks back up again in mid-January. I'm 1000+ applications deep now cold applying the normal way so I don't think doing that is even worth it anymore - getting rejected for jobs I'm perfectly qualified or even under/over qualified for. Startups are more likely to be remote too I believe, or at least hybrid - and you will learn a lot wearing multiple hats so it's good for early career people like me I think.
@TheLastCodebender11 ай бұрын
That's the way to go imo, applying the normal way like everyone else is too hard, you will be competing with everyone else so it's very hard to stand out. Those who will standout either have crazy experience or connections or a combination of both. So if you don't have that, you need to target companies strategically so have more changes. Startups who recently raised money are more accessible

What is the point earning 120k in Los Angeles if it is dangerous, lots of homeless, 5000 USD rent. I would rather get 50-70k in Texas.
@TheLastCodebender11 ай бұрын
I see your point. But you don't need to rent tha expensive, when I lived there I only paid $700 for rent, I was able to get it so cheap by having roommate and just renting a room in a house (its a bit intense tho I know haha,I was in my monk mode). If you want to live by yourself and just rent a 1bedroom apartment, it will cost you around 2k if you are responsible. This will still allow you to save a lot. About Texas, yeah good point, you need to calculate the total amojnt of money you save at the end of the year. Thats what matters. I would just add another point to consider too: salary growth. In big cities, your salary will grow as the faster too. A 10% raise on a 120k salary is $12k, but 10$ of 70k is $7k. The higher you go, the more it starts to make a difference and that will impact how much you can save too

Salaam Alaikum. I love your content. I'm from England and looking to shift careers from my current role as a Senior Marketing Executive to Software Engineering. WaAlaykum Assalam brother! How is the sitation in London? I have heard some companies pay decent there, check if there is an opportunity to work remotely for them if you dont want to move to London, some companies might still pay the same salary. But yeah overall, outside of the US, its tough to get a high salary in most countries, there aren't many spots available. About the language to start with, I recommend JavaScript if you want to be come a full stack software engineer (build web apps), that's very popular right now, especially with AI. If you need a roadmap to get started, I have created this one: www.lastcodebender.com You will get it for free when you sign up. Hope this helps!

People need to start separating the term programmer or developer from software engineer, it's not the same, a software engineer needs to know way more aspects of software and how to sell that software and not only coding
@awmy310911 ай бұрын
Those who call themselves software engineers don't know more, usually they know nothing and are suffering from dunning Kruger, they think too highly of themselves. Once anyone calls themselves a software engineer, I call BS. You shouldn't be calling yourself an engineer without an engineering degree.
