Awesome advice. I’ve also found that moving each hit ever so slightly to the left adds a ton of realism, because no drummer is playing exactly in time with fills like that, so making everything come in just a frog hair earlier could help too.

This was awesome, more of this for extreme metal drums programming. That's where a software like GGD starts to show its true nature. Tutorials like this helps making your product sound even better. I'd take a video about writing extreme drum fills in 3/4, I haven't found that anywhere.

A useful aid for this would be to use an electric drum kit as a midi controller, record yourself playing the parts as best you can, and then go back and analyze the midi that it produced, and use the knowledge gained from that to clean up and edit the hell out of it till it sounds how you want it.

Totally agree with this approach - by far the most natural

The fills _in particular_ need to not to be on a grid perfectly. My go-to rule is: if you feel that "a drummer must make an impression that the roll is fast", you offset most of the notes a tiniest bit closer to each other. Works great on fast snare triplets. If you feel that "a drummer implies power on that single note", offset it to a later point very, very slightly.

BONUS : A real drummer will never hit 100% in tempo. there's a 'humanise' function in the midi functions which you can use to slightly randomly offset every midi note, and also do the same for the velocity.

However, depending on the genre and kind of sound the artist is looking for, the drums will likely be quantized in the editing stage. Not everyone's cup of tea, but it is the industry standard these days, so the timing element of humanizing isn't a necessity, especially for the more modern styles of rock and metal

Unless you're using one of those ''humanize" tools it almost gets worse to individually move hits. Some people are good at it, but it takes a LONG time to do by hand, and unless you're going for a genre with a looser feel than metal, its normally not worth it. The velocity randomization is usually good enough for metal, at least to my ears.

@@thewalrusdragon9579 I've personally found it sounds a lot better when you have multiple things triggered at the same time especially toms. If they're quantized and hit exactly at the same time you get this strange effect where they kinda merge into one sound, adding a slight flam sounds a lot more realistic imo.

Otni oh I definitely agree. What I’m talking about specifically is the people that go overboard with it and try to slightly misalign every single hit. It eventually gets to the point where it just feels like they just recorded it with a bad drummer. Basically my point is that it’s better for it sound quantized and like MIDI than for it to just sound bad from over tweaking.

Most times the first hit in a group or fill is a bit harder(this does depends on the drummer ofcourse) also rights handed and left handed doesn't matter because if you are left handed the drummer would also hit with left first (at least in most cases but they start left as much as righties hit with right first) so you can treat a Left handed drummer the same as a right handed drummer.

I know a lot of programs come with a built in "humanize" tool, but if someone could ever make a plugin that is reasonably priced and will work with the majority of MIDI drum programs out of the box, it would make bank. Maybe it already exists, but I haven't found a well reviewed one for less that like $150.

It's really nice hearing recommendations from an actual drummer and you did a wonderful presentation. However your speaking volume is too low compared to the drum sounds. I can barely hear what you're saying without turning it up loud enough for the drums to blow my car speakers.
