For context: 500k cars can pass through the 401 each day across 18 lanes of traffic. Removing 145k of cars from the road each day amounts to emptying over 5 lanes of traffic on the 401. This is surely the sort of benefit that even those who view building transit infrastructure as a "war on cars" can get behind.

Transit has to be more convenient than car commuting - then we will see less cars
@henrivanbemmel7 күн бұрын
In addition, the govt and car people have to understand that Toronto's traffic has been awful in the 1950's. We seem not be able to anticipate anything. Thus, our transit is built many years AFTER it was needed. By then the residents have become wedded to their cars. In Holland, the transit goes in first. Also, with induced demand you can make the 401 30 lanes wide and in 5 years it will be full again. The only way is to give people a choice. Subdivisions that have stores in them so that you don't gave to drive 5 km to get a bag of milk. There many who would prefer not to have a car, but have no choice Due limitations of transit, cycling and zoning. It's not that hard to fix. It not against the car it's pro transportation choice.

@amarlad9 unfortunately this line is owned by CP and is a critical piece of their infrastructure. They will not be giving this line up. So they wouldn't be using existing track. I understand that most of the corridor is wide enough to add more tracks, so at least there's that, but they'd still be looking at entirely new rail bed, tracks, bridges, and tunnels across the entire width of the city. I agree it should still be done but it's going to be a lot more expensive and take a lot longer than most people would imagine.

Respectfully, this was a 4 minute video that said a lot of words but didn't have a lot of substance. GO has made significant gains over its life and the fact its moving 60 million riders a year is great. At 3:16 it starts with: How is Go expansion coming along? insert generic infrastructure comments. You have reached a pretty niche community here willing to watch this video about the transit expansion. Give us a little bit to work on. Station X should be complete in 2025 or we expect construction to start on station X in 2025. What are you doing towards Bowmanville or Niagara expansion. The rail tunnels under the 409(?) have been done for a while now and arent being used. Talk about moving the rail lines to that and that general timeframe. You mention electrification on the service, okay where? There could be so much more meat to this video to beyond the general platitudes. This is a good commercial for the general public who isn't train interested. But its a niche community to get promoted this video and watch it to completetion but to me it was so high level politically safe that it could have been 30 seconds and said the same thing. We have been promised Go expansion since Kathleen Wynne in one form or the other. Where has that $12 bullion been spent? Maybe there is more to come video wise but kind of disappointing.
